1. THE HABITS OF
AN EFFECTIVE
MATHEMATICS
TEACHER
PresentedbyMEDWINLUTHERL.BARRETE
2. Miller and Alexander (1996)
prescribed seven basic habits
that can keep math teachers on
the right track in facilitating
learning these are:
• HABIT 1: Let it make Sense –
Strive to teach for
understanding of mathematical
concepts and procedures.
• HABIT 2: Remember the Goals
– What are the goals of math
teaching?
3. • HABIT 3: Know Math tools – Math
teacher’s tools are quite numerous
nowadays. These are measuring
materials, paper, pencil etc. that
helps students to manipulate
everything in utilizing the said
appropriate and needed materials.
• It is also called Basic Tools in
Mathematics.
• HABIT 4: Show the way the
attitudes and way of life.
• Use math often in your daily life.
• Make mathematical reasoning,
4. • HABIT 5: Be Patient: Patience is
something teachers need to acquire and
enhance.
• Patience – also mean that the teacher
have to acknowledge even the minutest
achievement of the learners by for
instance giving them positive remarks
and pointing out what accurate and
right computation or solution steps they
did.
• HABIT 6: Creativity is the totality of
artistic quality, powerful imagination
and resourcefulness and skill of the
5. HABIT 7: Be Compassionate:
caring and kindness are
attitudes of teachers which
leave lasting Impression. (The
study of Bonni Gournea of the
University of North Dakota)
Compassion, in broader
sense also includes
sensitivity, acceptance, and
encouragement.
Compassion is different from
7. • Method 1: DEMONSTRATION:
A demonstration is “showing”
procedure to solve
mathematical problem.
• There are also Advantages and
disadvantages of this Method.
• METHOD 2: ILLUSTRATION:
Illustration involves the use of
graphs, maps, figures, and
pictures for the purpose of
explaining a mathematical
8. • METHOD 3: TESTING:
Testing is the process of
giving a test, also called a
quiz or exam, in order to
measure a student’s
understanding,
achievement, or
performance of a Math
lesson or Math course
objectives.
• Objective test is used to
9. • METHOD 4: ASSIGNMENT: An
assignment is a math work given by
the teacher to the student to be done
either in or out of class.
• Its main purpose is to guide directly
the students in their studies.
• METHOD 5: HOMEWORK: Homework
is any Math work or task related to
classroom activity that is perform
outside the school.
• METHOD 6: QUESTIONING:
• Questioning is a process where
11. • Traditional Assessment is
conducting lesson followed
by example and more on
rote memorizations. It is
held where in paper-pencil
test is the highlight.
• In here also the student will
develop their competent in
solving and computing
some problem that do not
involve real life scenario.
12. • Some authors do believe
that the traditional pencil-
and-paper test could
modified to be an effective
assessment. (Hopkins,
1997;Manon, 1995)
