Proposal adv project 2020
1. Proposal
1
Working Title:
Hollow Past
Audience:
If the film were to be made the age rating certificate would be 15. Containing bad language,
violence. Already the demographic is ages 15 onwards however, the film would be quite long (at
least two and half hours) and some moments would be quite slow, therefore putting off younger
(teenage) audiences. The game will still contain the themes and story, still quite adult. The game
would be more accessible to 15 onwards people.
The lead character is male and is an ex-hitman so most males would naturally gravitate to the film.
However, just because there’s a male lead doesn’t mean only men will enjoy the film/game.
Anyone (15+) will enjoy it, the story is rich, complex and keeps you guessing. The male lead is
also aided by his girlfriend which adds diversity.
This will be reflected in the marketing. Nothing will be done to appeal exclusively to men or
women, it’s the type of story that will interest people as well as the interesting characters.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
For my hypothetical film and joint video game concept, I decided to tell a murder mystery story. I
always love a good mystery, find them so engaging to watch, especially a good whodunnit. I want
to evoke the themes and genres of crime noir, a particular favourite of mine. Films that are great in
that genre are The Thid Man and Double Indemnity. Translating the mystery investigation aspect
of the film into a video game, to me, sounds very enticing and different. Which is something I
always aim for.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
Concept is to create a poster, magazine cover for a film I have come up with. Then translate that
film idea into a video game and create a cut scene for it.
The research I will do to help me flesh out my concept, ideas and style would be to first start with
looking at film noir and poster style of the era. That will obviously help me make a good poster by
identifying the conventions and combining them with a Saul Bass-esque poster. Find a gameplay
style I will use, then find an example of that so I can understand it better. Even though I will just
animate a cut scene, the knowledge of how my gameplay style works will affect how my cut scene
plays. How my characters move. What kind of levels they complete? How you move from point A
to point B in the story.
Production Techniques (approx. 150 words)
In order to animate the cut scene, I will use adobe photoshop to pixel animate the background and
characters. I have already experimented with animation on Photoshop; however, I’m still clouded
on the process. I will need patience so my animation looks good, I want to create a good product
having patience will help me with the process which is where my product could slip up. Photoshop
is available to me through college, so I will have to be in college when I animate.
I will also use various sound making websites to create a subtle eerie background music. On the
topic of music, I shall find diegetic sounds, that occur in the cut scene, from the internet. This adds
to the atmosphere and environment of the scene. I will find them from the internet as the sound
quality will be better, rather than if I did it myself.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
I will write in a production dairy when certain aspects of my plan or story change. I will get peer
feedback to see what someone else thinks of my work, this will help me evaluate if I was
successful. It will be interesting to see people's reaction whether good or bad.
