2. Fracture A fracture means that there has been a break in the bone. Therefore, when someone says they broke their arm, this means that they fractured their arm. Fractures are caused by an abnormal amount of force being put through the bone. This can happen in a car accident, a fall, or a direct blow. Fractures are classified according to the angle of the break, how the break happened, and how large the break is. The following pictures show a few different types of fractures. 8. Injuries to organs – such as the brain (in the case of skull fractures) or chest organs (if a rib breaks).

11. Attend to any bleeding wounds first. Stop the bleeding by pressing firmly on the site with a clean dressing. If a bone is protruding, apply pressure around the edges of the wound.

12. If bleeding is controlled, keep the wound covered with a clean dressing.

13. Do not attempt to straighten broken bones.

14. For limb fractures, provide support and comfort such as a pillow under the lower leg or forearm. However do not cause further pain or unnecessary movement of the broken bone.

15. Apply a splint to support the limb.

16. Immobilize the area by applying a sling for arms. Limbs should be immobilised above and below a fracture site to be effective.

17. If possible, elevate the fractured area and apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and pain.

18. In an emergency dial triple zero (000) for an ambulance.
