3. • Feel or hear a pop in the knee at the time of
injury – if a ligament is completely torn.
• Pain on the outside and back of the knee - the
degree of pain depend on the severity of the
knee injury.
• Bruising - take some time for bruising to
develop.
4. Swollen knee
• Occur within the first few hours of the injury.
• Bleeding inside the knee joint from the
damaged ligament.
• The degree of swelling depend on the severity
of the injury.
• Minor ligament sprains may cause little in the
way of swelling, whereas completely torn
ligaments may lead to a lot of knee swelling.
5. Unstable knee
• Feeling unstable or giving way if trying to
stand on it.
• May cause to limp.
• Depends on how severe the ligament injury is.
• Able to stand - minor sprain.
6. Limited movement
• Not being able to use or move the knee
normally.
• In complete ligament tears - movement can be
severely reduced.
• Minor sprains - have a relatively good amount
of knee movement.
7. Tenderness
• Mild tenderness - actual ligament in minor
sprains.
• More generalised and severe tenderness -
ligament is torn.
