Evaluation Q3: What have you learned from audience feedback?
1.
2. Audience feedback is vital to anything that
you are presenting to a vast range of
people. It is the process in which the
creator sets a criteria in which he/she has to
meet and then that criteria is scrutinised by
the public. Feedback gathered will then aid
the development process and therefore will
help the media product improve. In the
case of my media journey, the music video
I created was subject to a survey which
could be taken by the public, YouTube
comments/likes and a vox pop, which
involved members of Robert Clack School.
3. Survey monkey was the first tool in which I gathered
feedback about my initial ideas. With the creation on
a survey via the websites dedicated software, I was
able to develop a survey that could give an idea
what audiences are listening to right now. The
questions I asked included:
- What is your gender?
- How old are you?
- What is your favourite genre(s) of music?
- What is your favourite music video of all time?
- Why do you like this particular music video?
- If you are watching a music video, what would
appeal to you?
- Finally what is the most memorable thing you have
seen in a music video?
4. These questions gave me the ability to asses my results knowing that this
would only improve my final music video because I felt that all the
questions asked would give relevant and precocious information in
which I could use. After creating the survey, the next step was to
interoperate the data. The data showed that the majority of my viewing
audience would be male, 76.1% of the people who took the survey
were males. With the data being reliable as 122 people took a test
sample of the survey, possible consequences of this could be a gender
imbalance within our target audience, meaning that our final product
would have to display characteristics that are more familiar to the male
audience. One example of my application of the data I gathered within
my music video is between *2:30-2:45* of the video. This has reference to
playing football in the street, this can be associated with a large amount
of young/teenage boys especially if they grew up in less privileged area
of the UK (referring to being "Stuck In The Ghetto").
In addition to that the target age was identified as being 10-19 year
olds. This is due to the fact that 66.67% of the people who took part in
the survey were within this age category. This positively correlated with
the types of genres that were selected on question 3. Genres that are
more affiliated with "the younger generation“.
5. A valuable asset to my audience research was my vox pop, I asked students in my class and around Robert
Clack school to gain important consumer information. I gathered the information by asking 4 simple questions in
which the listener can play an active role in answering into a camera.
Questions I asked and why I asked them:
- Question 1 was, "Do you watch music videos?" this allowed me to set a benchmark. a started question that
would give the inview-e the chance to give a yes or no answer. This would give the basis to ask more
complicated questions. In addition to that I feel that this question would of allowed people to be eased into the
questions we were about to ask.
- Question 2 was, "What is your favourite music video?" This gave a personal touch, when asking people to
reiterate information to you, you want to make them feel as comfortable as possible so that the information you
receive is true and accurate. Furthermore asking a wide range of people will give a wide range of answers e.g.
people of a higher age generally seem to talk about music from 'their' generation where as people who are 17 -
18 will tend to relate to video being made from 2000's onwards.
- Question 3 was, "What makes a great music video?" This question gives people the chance to express what
they like. A great music video will tend to have a positive effect on the person answering the question so
listening to them and getting information on a videos may not come into the interviewers head as 'a great
music video'. This variation of replies will give the vox pop a balanced answer scheme and give the survey some
purpose.
- Question 4 was, "What type of media do you use to watch music videos?" I asked this question because I know
how the use of media is changing. With online platforms like YouTube and Vimeo music videos are available
whenever you are online added with the improved speed of phone signals (4G) and internet speeds (50mb +)
"buffering" is no longer a lingering problem. Also with the addition of services like TeVo by Virgin Media which
allows you to get music videos straight to your home TV. The hardware we watch music videos has also
changed, instead of watching them on TV, the introduction of smart phones and iPads the music video has
become portable.
6. Another tool I used to gather feedback was the viewing
and comments system on YouTube. The comments system
works when an video is uploaded onto YouTube and
Google+ members can post their thoughts and debate
between each other. The viewing system is operated
when the link to the video is clicked, therefore taking you
to the main video page, this will count as one view. Views
on a video can determine popularity e.t.c.
However using YouTube to gain audience feedback for a
music video that has had no real mass publication is very
difficult, there are 100,000's of music videos on YouTube
and this therefore makes it extremely difficult to find the
video via the website search engine.
7. For the audience feedback process of making and evaluating
my music video, improvements could be made. Looking back
on the process, I feel that the questions I used for my survey may
of been time consuming. This is due to the fact that the last 4
questions of my survey were written answers questions this
therefore could deter some people who are thinking of doing
the survey. In addition to that the use of YouTube could of been
improved, with better publication I feel that YouTube could of
played a bigger part in the conduction of research.
To conclude, the overall experience of gaining significant
audience feed back is key to create a music video that is going
to become a success. With the use of various methods, the
ability to mould my video into something that is either appealing
to the masses or to a niche audience was only achievable when
accurate and reliable data was extracted from my audience
feedback methods. The ways in-which reliable data was
extracted were simple, but very effective giving the whole
process of gathering audience feedback significance.
