Question 3
1. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
We decided to conduct audience research into our products in order to gain a better
understanding of what our target audience would be looking for, and so increase the
effectiveness of our products.
We used the website Surveymonkey in order to
distribute a survey across the internet. We aimed this survey at both our target audience,
through Metalcore forums such as stereokiller and AllMetalForums. This was aimed at
gathering information from our target audienece.
We also used a smaller, more in depth questionnaire in person, aiming it at a general
audience (our media class). Although this data would not be as valid, we were hoping it
would still prove useful in improving our music video.
When conducting research, it was important to note first and foremost that our total
feedback was relatively low. Our internet survey on our video gathering a total of 22 replies
demonstrated this, with it getting over 100 views on Stereokiller without one reply.
The questions for our online survey were as follows –
1) What is your gender?
2) What is your age
3) Do you listen to this type of music? if so how often?
4) What could be improved?
5) What parts of the video did you enjoy?
6) Did the video reflect the genre of music?
7) Did you find the video interesting? If so why/why not?
We tried to make the questions give both qualitative and quantitative data, in order for us
to quickly gather the information, but for it also to be in depth. When collecting the data,
this proved useful. We were able to both categorise answers, and understand the reason
given for them. For example, question 7 asks a quantitative question (yes or no) and then
asks a qualitative question following this up.
2. The responnses from our survey were interesting. We found out that 75% of our audienece
were male, and 100% of these were aged between 16-21. 50% of the people who took the
survey said that they listened to this music very often.vthese 3 questions from the off
allowed us to relaise that I target adueinece were males aged between 16-21 and listened
to this music very often.
For question 4 it was made evident that our video could have been made more interesting,
as the same location was pointed out to be ‘repititive’. And one user commented asking if
we could add some different types of shots in, such as narrative. This proved to be very
useful feedback, and although we didnt change the shots due to time constarints and
wanting to keep the video performance based, we change the lighting to ‘Cartoon’.
Later feedback aquired however stated that although the cartoon effect was interesting, it
‘wasnt befitting of the genre’.
Audienece feedback also suggested that we change the the editing of our music video. It
was suggested that we confrom to the conventions of editing – ie into 4/8 beat sequences.
This would allow our video to pace itself better as well as being snappy enough to keep the
audience interested.
When looking at our target audienece, it was evident that our video would need to be fast
and interestiong to keep the young audience entertained. I bleieve that the feedback we
recieved allowed me to do this by changing the lighting and increasing the pace of editing.
