2. Digestive System
There are many different terms used though out the
medical field for different pathology, procedures, and
pharmacology in the digestive system. Here are some
terms we are studying this chapter.
3. Lavage
Lavage usually involves a NG
tube used to wash out the
stomach. Also known as
stomach pumping or Gastric
irrigation, is the process of
cleaning out the contents of the
stomach. This device is usually
used on a person who has
ingested a poison, overdosed on
a drug or consumed too much
alcohol. It may also be used
before surgery to clear the
contents be fore surgery.
4. Cachexia
Cachexia is the loss of weight
and generalized wasting that
occurs during a chronic disease.
In Cachexia even if a patient eats
more calories body mass will be
lost indicating there is a
fundamental pathology in
peace. Cachexia is normally seen
in patients with cancer, AIDS,
Multiple Sclerosis and more. It is
a positive risk factor for death.
5. Hematochezia
Hematochezia is the passage of
fresh blood from the anus,
normally in or with the stool. Its
commonly associated with lower
gastrointestinal bleeding but
can also occur from brisk upper
GI bleed. Other causes include
hemorrhoids and diverticulosis
both of which are relatively
benign.
6. Hernioplasty
Hernioplasty also known as a
hernia repair is surgical
operation for correcting of a
hernia. Hernia’s can occur in
many different places including
abdomen, groin, diaphragm,
brain and the site of a previous
operation.
