Complementary colours are used to make the front cover flow. On magazine covers, front covers
have a large image used to grab the readers attention. The image relates to the content of the
magazine, usually the person on the front Is the ā€˜starā€™ of the issue. The image relates to the colour
scheme used in the writing. The front cover follows the rule of thirds creating a balanced front
cover. The mast head on lifestyle magazines shows a large title, written in bold capital letters,
usually at the top of the magazine. Font types used are bold. For example in the magazine
ā€˜cosmopolitanā€™ is written in bold lettering at the top of the page. This is to grab the readers attention
in the shop. The cover model, stereotypically a celebrity usually indicates what the main pages of
the magazine will be about. This could be anything from someone not famous to someone like
Ariana Grande. For example: Exclusive interview with Miley which will change your mind. A younger
model is usually used if the magazine is aimed for a younger audience as the buyer will be more
influenced to buy it as they are interested and inspire to be that person. Cover lines are used to
promote the magazines content giving a slight preview to whatā€™s in the magazine. Straplines are

for images and larger titles to be added. This is a neat and tidy way of writing allowing the page to be kept tidy making it easy fro the page to be read. Composition, grid
structure and the use of white space help the text and layout to be easily read and understood. This enables the reader to read quicker in a way hat makes more sense. The

Colours used links to the theme that the magazine is focusing on, in this instance
the grey compliments the pink making the pink stand out making the headline and
cover lines stand out. A cover photo is used to grab the readers attention. The
image used links to the content of the magazine showing the views what they can

title stereotypically links to women persuading them to buy it. It also allows it to
be visible and allowing it to stand out in the shops. Elle is aimed to women ages
18-49. this is a wide age gap and covering all genres relating to ages may be tricky.
Elle focuses on looking at news and emerging newcomers in the celebrity world. It
also looks at makes up and latest trend but still include things for all. Cover lines
and strap lines help portray this as they give an insight to what lies in the content
of the magazine giving the reader an insight. For example: 10 hottest trends this
winter to keep you warm whilst still looking cute. The cover lines curve around the
cover model dragging the attention to the middle of the image, the models face.
Puffs and plugs are used to entice the readers to buy the magazine. For example,
freebies can be used to persuade the buyer to buy the magazine. For example: free

complementary colour scheme page, which follows the rule of thirds.
There is the main image in the middle third which draws the readers
attention to the surrounding text. To add to this, there is a
complimentary pull quote next to the main image, this entices the
reader. As it is in bold capitals this adds to the attention it creates. The
text is laid out in columns allowing the writing to be easily read. The
pale background allows the text and imagery not to be drowned
creating an aesthetically pleasing presentation. A topic usually situated
at the top of the page allowing the reader to easily see what the page is
about which enables them to decide if they want to read it or not. All of
these factors target the age range of the audience 18-35 females. The
neat and tidy layout is what keeps the reader buying the magazine due
to this it boost the income in which the magazine makes. Use of
negative space adds depth to the page pulling the tiring forward making
it easier to read. Page numbering is used so that when looking at the
content page you can easily flick to the page in which you want to read.

this Vanity fair magazine follows the rule of thirds. Ru is placed in
the middle third drawing the eye to the center vantage point of
the image. The title falls behind the image. This makes the title
playful and unique as you cannot see the full title. Puffs and plugs
are used to persuade the reader to buy the magazine as it may
contain some of the latest treads and freebies that you need to

magazine. As the target audience for this magazine is 18-49, a
iconic model needs to be used that all age catorgaries can

that the buyer know the price of the magazine, as well as this the
barcode is used to help the shop sales assistant to scan it quickly.
. The price is shown on the magazine to indicate to the buyer how
much the magazine is. It varies from magazine where the price is
on the front cover but stereotypically it is at the bottom either on
or near the barcode.
VANITY FAIR PRINT
In Elle print, an example show to the right shows a
black and white image. The centre of the photo,
the models head enables the Verwoerd to follow
the patterns of the body which drags the bowers
attention drown the models body. A large bold title
is used to show the reader what page is about so
the viewer can quickly decode I they want to read
the page or not. The use of negative space helps
the viewer to todayā€™s on the key elements of the
page. For example the storyline. The typography
used within the page links to the subject in which
the page relates to. Elle target audience females
ages 18-49 can read the magazine and relate to it.
The content put inside the magazine is key. All ages
can read news about celebrities and be satisfied.
Columns of text are used to make it easy to read
enabling a quick read. From research, magazines
are typically read in lunch breaks and when at
hairdressers so people do not have lot of time to
read the magazine that they are interested in. The
page follows a grid structure keeping the page neat
and tidy craering an easy on the eye effect.

On Vanity Fairs website page you are presented with a
page showing top story lines including images. The
images used summarise the article. The black bold title of
vanity fair grabs the readers attention. The text is in a serif
font showing a clear and elegant look. The font relates to
the age category that vanity fair is for, for example an
older more sophisticated women. There is a ā€˜trendingā€™
column to the right showing the main story lines that are
being focussed on in that days news. White space has
been used. This creates a feeling that the magazine is
aimed for older women who prefer a more clean and tidy

pictures it would suggest that the website is aimed
towards younger adults and teenagers. There is a search
bar in the top right. This allows the reader to search what

along with this, there is a subscribe button. This is tactful as the
reader will have read a story they like meaning they are more
likely to subscribe.
COSTCONDISERATIONSOFPRINT
ANDDIGITALBASEDMAGAZINES.
When purchasing a print magazine can range in price depending on the
magazine. On average Cosmopolitan costs Ā£3.99, as does Elle whereas Vanity
Fair costs Ā£5.99. This demonstrates that reading the online magazine is free
and allows people to browse the content without the costs of buying a print
magazine. However people may be enticed to buy the print magazine as it
has the content of the months latest gossip. Subscribing to a print magazine
can be lot cheaper than buying the magazine every month. This may be due
to the fact of printing costs that the magazines cost to make as well as
labour workers, editing, designers and distributors. Although print magazines
need to have specialist people to produce the magazine, the online versions
need to have web designers as well as advertisers. Rather than being sold to
further companies, online versions are a lot cheaper. Cosmopolitan costs
Ā£19.99 a year to subscribe, Elle costs Ā£39.99 and Vanity Fair costs Ā£32.00. it
works out cheaper to buy the magazines as one yearly bulk rather than one
issue at a time. Cosmopolitan works out fir 12 issues with no subscription at
Ā£47.88 which is Ā£27.89 difference. Elle costs Ā£47.88 for 12 monthly issues
meaning itā€™s Ā£7.89 cheaper to buy a years subscription. Vanity fair, the most
expensive magazine to but works out at Ā£71.88 for 12 individual magazines,
leaving a difference of Ā£39.88 meaning it is the cheapest to but in one yearly
subscription. In order to produce digital magazines, a design has to be done
to decide whether a replica or a reflow should be used. Replica allows for a
whole page to be produced at once and also offers the use of a PDF file
version of the print magazine. Reflow fits the texts and elements on the
screen in an orderly way and allows it to be interactive with the reader.
Replica is seen to be easier and the less expansive way and is mostly used in
the app and website. Reflow is typically a lot more expensive however it is
created on word press and then is converted into a PDF file. Cost can
however vary depending on the issue.
OPPOURTUNITIES AND LIMITATIONS OF PRINT AND DIGITAL BASED MAGAZINES TO
ADRESS TAGET AUDIENCES.
Advantages of a digital magazine can be that it allows people to buy the magazine and allows it
to be accessed immediate due to the app and their access to websites which enables them to
read the latest stories straight away. This could be more convenient for people nowadays as
people do not have a lot of spare time to be going out and buying products. This can lead to
the disadvantage of companies not seeing as many copies as they need to resulting in a drop in
profit. The magazines I have analysed, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Vanity Fair aims to please a
young target audience. Younger people tend to like to hold the product in their hand meaning
copies are still being sold world wide. Furthermore, digital magazines are more interactive,
such as the advantages of having videos and games. Print magazine fail to do this as they are
just writing on paper however QR codes can be used to be scanned so that people can access
their website with the videos. This may de-attract the older audience as they may find it hassle
to get their phone out when their having downtime. However digital magazines bring the
advantage of creating less paper waste improving their impact on their environment. If print
magazines are not recycled properly this can have negative effects. Reading a print magazine
have proven facts that it can reduce stress and relax the brain and reduce anxiety. This is due to
the fact that phone screens have blue light which effects our eyes enhancing the risk of
headaches. To see print magazines more advertising has to be done as most people assume
that everything nowadays is done on out phones.
TECHICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINT
AND DIGITAL BASED MAGAZINES.
When looking at digital magazines, there are many technical elements which need to be considered
when creating the magazine. One of the most technical elements is ensuring that the magazine looks
good on all different tablets and smartphones. The majority of digital publishes use Adobe digital
publishing, however others like aquafads, digital publishing mags. In digital publishing replica is best
used on tablets. Digital replica is a PDF document which consists of features such as links, photos,
videos, etc. Despite this version being cheap, it does not allows for font sizes to be adjusted. Later on,
fully interactive publications were produces enabling touch screen elements to be used, including
rotation, zoom and audio. When creating a digital magazine it is best to stick to the programme which
enables you to do everything in one device. Compared to digital magazines, print magazines are a lot
easier to make and create due to the design elements needed. For print, mainly graphic designers so
all the week alongside artists, publishers and marketing assistants. In order to make the magazine
more engaging to the target audience factors such as image (birds eye view is most popular at the
moment), text, captions, page numbering and headings are all considered. Allowing a balance for
white space is important to create a balance between the information provided, images and the titles.
The content page is a significant page within a magazine as it allows the reader to easily see the
information that they can read in the magazine without having to flick through the whole thing to find
what they are interested in. Complementary colours are used so that the pages come across as
aesthetically pleasing to the viewer. The average size of a magazine is 210cm x 297cm.

Cosmopolitan works out fir 12 issues with no subscription at Ā£47.88 which is Ā£27.89 difference. Elle costs Ā£47.88 for 12 monthly issues meaning itā€™s Ā£7.89 cheaper to buy a years subscription. Vanity fair, the most expensive magazine to but works out at Ā£71.88 for 12 individual magazines, leaving a difference of Ā£39.88 meaning it is the cheapest to but in one yearly subscription. In order to produce digital magazines, a design has to be done to decide whether a replica or a reflow should be used. Replica allows for a whole page to be produced at once and also offers the use of a PDF file version of the print magazine. Reflow fits the texts and elements on the screen in an orderly way and allows it to be interactive with the reader. Replica is seen to be easier and the less expansive way and is mostly used in the app and website. Reflow is typically a lot more expensive however it is created on word press and then is converted into a PDF file. Cost can however vary depending on the issue.
