1. Q2. How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
By Katie Rodway
2. Representation- What Is It?
Media representations are the ways in which the media
portrays particular groups, communities, experiences,
ideas, or topics from a particular ideological or value
perspective.
3. Target Audience
Age Range: The age range of my music magazine is mainly aimed at 15-24
year olds. They would need a reasonable income in order to buy the
magazine and would therefore need a part-time job e.g. waitressing.
Gender: This edition of my magazine would mainly be aimed at a female
audience who show interest in the pop music industry and bands and artists
such as, Ed Sheeran and One Direction.
Interests: The target audience will need to
show interest in the POP industry and
will want to find out all the little
details about artists, including their
personal lives and also their opinions on
anything.
4. Who is shown in the text?
Both girls in the text are white British heterosexual
girls.
They are both presented as 17-18 year old girls
based on the stories that feature in the magazine.
However, the make-up they’re wearing is quite
subtle which may make them appear younger. The
use of little makeup would help show the readers of
the magazine that it’s okay to express their natural
beauty
Judging by the clothing they have been dressed in,
the two girls have been presented as the middle
class. However, Emily (image at the bottom) is
wearing a Pandora ring and bracelet on- this shows
wealth in the artist.
5. How are they Shown in The Text?
In each image that features on the magazine, I have shown a young, teenage girl. None of
the girls are wearing revealing or provocative clothing
The first artist, Emily Hendzel, has been shown wearing a dark turtle neck in the first couple of
photos. The use of dark clothing will help to portray the darkness of the artist character. In the
other photo of the artist, I have shown the innocence of the artist- this shows that the artist has
two sides to her, one more rebellious side and also her innocent side- this adds to the
storyline about people being ‘two faced’.
Furthermore, the second artist, Tia Newton, has been shown wearing a black leather jacket
and black jeans. The storyline that this image comes under is ‘people say she’s the celebrity
cutie-pie, but some may disagree’. The dark clothes she’s wearing shows an alternative to
being the celebrity cutie-pie which is the ruthless side to her- this is also shown through the
use of dark make-up and also her dyed red hair.
6. How are they shown in the
text? Cont.
Emily Hendzel has been portrayed as quite a
judgmental character. This has occurred because the
pose she is pulling in all of the photos of her make her
look like she’s judging people.
The way the language has been written in the quotations
from the artist in the magazine portray the artist as being
quite well-spoken as no slang or informal language has
been used.
