2. The front cover image
Pose & Style
I have posed my model to make direct eye contact with the
camera this is so she will be direct addressing the target
audience. I have used beats headphones as a prop to place
round my models neck, she is then biting through the wire
and with clenched fist pulling the wire apart. This creates a
fierce look and represent the attitude of the magazine to
‘SMASH’ things up and create an overall aggressive look. This
is a good representation of someone from the genre of Rock
music because her body posture creates an aggressive
attitude linking to how heavy Rock music sounds.
I have dressed my model in all black and red as from previous
research of other magazines this was a popular theme
throughout among various music magazines for example Q
magazine and NME. The red headphones also went well with
the outfit but stood out within the shot. I then did the models
hair and make up, I made my model have messy dark hair this
was because in previous research a lot of the male musicians
had messy dark hair. I then gave my model dark make up to
create a mysterious look.
3. Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene
The main reason why I dressed my model in black and red in
this front cover shot was because the colour black connoted
danger and darkness. The colour red connotes blood and
gore. This is what rock music in general tries to portray within
how heavy metal sounds.
I gave my model dark messy hair to create a careless look, that
ideally she is not bothered how she looks.
The look that I have created represents the target audience to
how stereotypes of fans of rock music look as they wear dark
colours and have messy hair also the attitude being portrayed
within the shot shows then can be wild stereotype.
4. The final front cover
How does your product represent your target
audience?
My product does represent the target to an extent, as she is
of a teenage age, and my product is aiming both genders.
However my product doesn’t represent the stereotypical
target audience as my model is a female and the Rock genre is
dominated by males. The aim of my magazine is to bring new
talent to the table, not stick to the traditional stereotypes and
bring a new wave of female Rock musicians to the genre. Even
though my model for my magazine is a female there have
been and still are female Rock musicians within the genre for
example Debbie Harry from the band ‘Blondie’ that used to be
a very popular band in the late 70s. Also Stevie Nicks from the
band ‘Fleetwood mac’ who were popular from the 70s- 80s.
Presently Hayley Williams from the band ‘Paramore’ has
proved to be popular among the Rock target audience today.
My product represents the target audience by the text used in
cover lines ‘Win a brand new PRS guitar’, ‘Gig review’ and ‘Top
10 Albums of the year’ these cover lines are of interest by my
target audience for example going to music gigs to socialise
and playing a musical instrument in their spare time.
5. Challenge/support
the dominant target audience?
My product challenges the dominant target audience as genre is more stereotypical to men, and
with my product I have broke through the social barrier to put a female model on my front cover
rather than a male. This was because I wanted to create something different on the product
market, however the magazine of Kerrang with Hayley Williams on the front cover relates to my
magazine as they both use female music artists. The front cover of rolling stone is more of a
product that supports the stereotypical ideology of a Rock music magazine due to having two
males on the front Noel and Liam Gallagher from the band ‘Oasis’.
6. Double page spread
Pose & Style
I have posed my model to make direct eye
contact with the camera, so that she will be
direct addressing the audience in the double
page spread. She is also putting her tongue
out this was to imitate Gene Simmons from
the well known Rock band ‘Kiss’. She is also
doing the universal rock and roll hand gesture
to channel the target audience.
I have dressed her in a lighter t-shirt teamed
with a blue and red shirt as I wanted there to
be more focus on the background.
Mise-en-scene
I put my model into black leather leggings as
the leather jacket is constantly linked to the
Rock musicians throughout other magazines
and media products and it connotes the
genre of Rock music. Also the background is
of a graffiti skate park shed which can be
consider a crime this can link to the Rock
music genre of ‘danger and darkness’ also I
thought it would be an unusual setting for my
model to pose.
7. Representation of target audience
challenge/support?
I think my double page spread to an extent does
support the target audience as her body posture shows
the stereotypical reckless and wild behaviour of a Rock
star. However even though she is a female it would
appeal to the audience as the shot represents the
stereotypical bad behaviour of a rock musician and is
suited with the title of the magazine to ‘SMASH’ things
up for so called ‘fun.
