The document discusses how a media product represents particular social groups. It represents young male and female teens interested in pop music ages 16-18. Both genders of teens are often stereotyped as misbehaving and the magazine aims to portray indie artists in a more positive light through natural-looking photography featuring casual clothing styles. Photos on a winter scene were used to both challenge and confirm stereotypes of indie artists for this target demographic.
How does your media product represent particular social groups ?
1. Q2 - How does your
media product represent
particular social groups?
Leila Arada
2. Stereotypical Indie Pop
Artists
The indie artist presented in
this side is Larna Dell Ray. By
looking at this image, she
has long dark hair wearing a
low cut top.
This indie artist is Ben Howard.
He has messy hair and is
wearing a jumper showing a
quite care free attitude.
3. Social Groups
The social group represented is both
young males and female teens
interested in pop music ages 16-18.
My magazine tries to portray a good
image on these young teenagers.
In a way by doing this, it is conforming
the usual stereo type of indie artists,
however you can get the odd ‘negative’
stereo type of an indie artist, creating a
bad image for themselves.
4. Gender
Both young males and females tend
to be know for having a bad name for
themselves.
Women are generally represented in a
narrow range of social roles by
various types of media, whilst men are
shown performing a full range of
social and occupational roles.
Both genders of teens are known for
getting quite a bad name for
themselves, giving teenagers a bad
5. Representation of my artist on
my magazine.
By looking at just a few of my double page spread
pictures I took, I feel that I have presented
my social groups of my artist very well. I tried
to incorporate a very natural yet stylish look
onto my artist. The Mise en scene of this, is
that it is set on a lake, showing the wintery scenery and surroundings, with
very subtle make up, still adding slight natural browns and pinks for the
lips and eyes.
I dressed my artist in a fur hat and coat, with gloves
and a scarf (showing the wintery side of the shoot)
however incorporating still some aspects of edge of
my artist, wearing a shirt and shorts and tights
underneath with various rings and jewellery.
6. By making my artist dress in this way and the mise en
scene used, I feel that I want to both challenge and
confirm the stereo types represented of indie artist in this
generation.
By the article presented in my double page spread, I
have tried to incorporate pictures matching my answers,
as for example laughing and smiling.
I feel that by the use of a social group, it is the main part
of the target audience so by using my audience of 16-18
year olds, I wanted my magazine to appeal to them by
making indie artists be represented in a more positive
light.
7. My magazine is aimed at males and female teenagers
aged 16-18. My magazine shows this as it shows a
variety of different music genres that can connect with
many different types of social groups. My magazine is
based on indie music that also features a variety of other
styles including pop and alternative music.
Different social groups listen to indie music, but however
it is not as popular as for example chart music, as chart
music does not just focus on one genre of music but .
There are many different other social groups including
groups at college/school, or university students.
