One of the ACTFL Core Practices is to teach grammar as a concept in context. The PACE model provides a concrete method of doing this.

The PACE Model: Inductive Foreign Language Grammar Teaching #wlclassroom

  1. 1. Teach Grammar as a Concept The PACE Model
  2. 2. Tips, Tools and Resources to help your students rise in proficiency and communicate with confidence.
  3. 3. With this approach students focus on the forms of the grammar structure after they focus on the meaning.
  4. 4. Teacher and learners collaborate and co-construct a grammar explanation after focusing on the meaning in context.
  5. 5. Much like authentic language learning that happens outside of the classroom,
  6. 6. the PACE Model stresses that learning happens between people through social interaction. (Think Vygotsky)
  7. 7. With the PACE Model the learner is an active participant in the language learning process.
  8. 8. Presentation Attention Co-Construction Extension
  9. 9. PRESENTATION  Foreshadow the structure with a text that emphasizes the structure.  Recycle the storyline with oral activities.
  10. 10. ATTENTION :  Students focus on the language form or structure through the use of images, powerpoint slides or highlighting a particular linguistic form.
  11. 11. CO-CONSTRUCTION :  Teacher provides scaffolding and encourages learners to predict.  Students construct grammar rules, guided by the teacher.
  12. 12. EXTENSION :  Learners use the grammatical structures to complete a task relating to lesson theme.  Task remains communicative while also highlighting a structure.
