tradition, and passion. Ballroom is a set
dances, which are enjoyed both socially and
competitively around the world. Because of its
performance and entertainment aspects,
dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and
television. The term 'ballroom dancing' is
from the word ball which in turn originates
Latin word ballare which means 'to dance‘.
3. •Competitions, sometimes referred to as dance sport,
range from world championships,
•In competitive ballroom, dancers are judged by diverse
criteria such as
- Poise
-The hold or frame
- Posture
- Expression
-Timing
- Body alignment
- Foot and leg action
- Presentation.
4. THE ORIGINS
•Ballroom dancing traces its origins to the early 20th
century, when theWest End establishments were
developing the art of ballroom dancing.
•The world’s leading board for ballroom dance
examinations is the Imperial Society ofTeachers of
Dancing (ISTD), was established in 1904.
6. • Donnie Burns - a Scottish ballroom dancer, was never defeated in any
ballroom dance competition for 20 straight years, a feat which landed in
the Guinness Book ofWorld Records.
• Gaynor Fairweather - the spiciest ballroom dancer ever to come out of the
UK. Fairweather ended her partnership with Burns when she married and
began dancing with her husband, Italian ballroom dancer Mirko Saccani.
• Pierre Dulaine – by 1976, partnering withYvonne Marceau, began winning
his first of fourWorld Championships.
• Marge and Gower champion - The Champions were accomplished all-
around dancers who specialized in Broadway and ballroom styles. Marge
got her start as a dance model for Disney animations.
8. SYLLABUS
In these levels, moves are restricted to those
written in syllabus, and illegal moves can lead to
disqualification.
Each has different
moves on their syllabus,
increasing in difficulty.

10. THE CLOSE HOLD
• In the close hold dances, the couples are required to maintain five
areas of contact with each other.
• The man’s left hand holding the woman’s right hand.
• The woman’s left elbow resting on the man’s right elbow.
• The woman’s left hand on the right upper arm of the man.
• The man’s right hand on the woman’s shoulder.
• The right parts of their chest touching.
13. •CHA CHA-The Cha Cha is lively, flirtatious ballroom dance
full of passion and energy.
•FOXTROT- it is a smooth dance in which dances make long,
flowing movements across the floor.
•MAMBO- it is one of the most sensual and emotional Latin
American ballroom dances. Swaying hip movements, facial
expressions, and arm movements.
•PASO DOBLE- is one of the liveliest ballroom dances. It is
modeled after the sound, drama, and movement of the
14. •QUICKSTEP- is a quick version of Foxtrot. It is extremely
quick stepping, runs and quick. Quickstep is exciting to
watch, but among the most difficult of all the ballroom
dances.
•RUMBA- considered by many to be the most romantic of
all Latin ballroom dances. Referred to as the
“Grandfather of the Latin dances.”
•SAMBA- possibly the most popular of all Brazilian
