people in attendance to a certain social

•It is performed usually in pairs, male and
female, but may also be performed in groups.

“ball” which turn originates
from the Latin word ballare
which means ‘to dance’.
4. BALLROOM AS A SOCIAL
DANCE
•Social dances are communal dances performed
in any social gatherings in any given space.
•They are synonymously referred to as ballroom
dances, but ballroom dances are performed in
balls or formal social functions.
6. STANDARD DANCES
•On the other hand, the pair
wear formal ankle length gowns
for females and coat-and-tie for
males.
•Most of the time, movements
in these are restricted to close
ballroom position with partner.

•Tango is a partner dance and
social dance that originated in the
1880s along the Río de la Plata,
the natural border between

• The foxtrot is a smooth,
progressive dance characterized
by long, continuous flowing
movements across the dance
floor.
11. QUICKSTEP
• Quickstep consists of a partner
ballroom hold in closed position.
It's basic step is at a nearly
running pace with hops, skips,
points, flicks, crossing of the feet,
kicks and more.
12. LATIN DANCES
• It distinguish themselves by the
costumes worn by performers.
• They are somewhat revealing,
tight-fitting, sexy yet sophisticated
in nature.
• They are also distinguished by the
nature of the movements.
14. SALSA
•Salsa is a latin dance, associated
with the music genre of the
same name, which was first
popularized in the United States
in the 1960s in New York City.
15. MAMBO
•It is characterized by the
exciting energy and enticing
rhythms, which draws eyes
and allows for a lot of fun
for the dancers.
16. MERENGUE
•It is a type of danced walk
and is accessible to a
large variety of people
with or without dance
experience.
17. SWAY
• Sway dance is a group of social
dances that developed with the
swing style of jazz music in the
1920s–1940s, with the origins of
each dance predating the popular
"swing era". It describes a
dancer's body position in which
the entire body gracefully
deflects from the vertical.
18. CHA-CHA
•It is a dance of Cuban origin. It is
danced to the music of the same
name introduced by the Cuban
composer and violinist Enrique
Jorrin in the early 1950s.
19. RUMBA
• It is an Afro-Cuban folk-dance
origin that became internationally
popular in the early 20th century.
Best known for the dancers' subtle
side to side hip movements with
the torso erect, the rumba is
danced with a basic pattern of two
quick side steps and a slow
forward step.
20. SAMBA
• It is a ballroom dance of Brazilian origin,
popularized in western Europe and the
United States in the early 1940s.
Characterized by simple forward and
backward steps and tilting, rocking body
movements, it is danced to music in 4/4
time with syncopated rhythm.

• The jive is a dance style that originated in
the United States from the African
Americans in the early 1930s. The name
of the dance comes from the name of a
form of African-American vernacular
slang, popularized in the 1930s by the
publication of a dictionary by Cab
Calloway, the famous jazz bandleader
and singer
22. BOOGIE
•Boogie is the term
applied by the sport
of competitive dance
to a form of swing
dance.
23. PASO DOBLE
• The Paso Doble is a theatrical Latin
dance with Spanish and French
origins. It is a dramatic dance that
tells a story through sharp, staccato
movements, striking body poses, and
flamenco style footwork.

different levels of difficulty and is limited to five
dances per category only.
•Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive
for the Latin category.
