1. MCA Connect’s Consulting Tips: Email Etiquette
Your Audience
• Use
• TO: when a response is expected
• CC: when no response is expected, but you need to keep people informed
• BCC: when targeting large groups or keeping people informed in discrete fashion
• PS – If you are Bcc'd on an email, make sure you ONLY reply to the original sender!
• Avoid
• Excessive lingo when interacting with customers (That’s tot’s nar’, bra’. I grok ya’)
• Reply To “All” unless specifically asked to do so in the email.
Your Approach
• Are you mad, sad, happy? Tone is hard to convey in emails – is a conversation better?
• Emoji or Emoticons can help, but are not always appropriate.
• If a response is required, make that clear in the subject line or message body.
Your Content
• Can you fit it into a subject line? No?
• Then can it fit into one paragraph? No?
• Then can it fit into two paragraphs? No?
• If it cannot, then a phone call or meeting is likely more efficient.
