Unit 22: Task One
Understand scripted elements for a range of media products
FILM SCRIPT: Bohemian Rhapsody
Type of script: UK
Language The dialogue of the script is restricted, informal, and easy to understand as there is a
lot of English slang ‘helluva’ etc. The technical elements of the script are formal and
elaborate. This film was made to inform and educate as it is a biography of a famous
singer's life therefore most of it needs to be true, and it is also made to entertain,
which is shown with informal language used by the characters and why certain parts
are dramatized. The genre of the film is music and biopic. This has been shown by
focusing on the life Freddie Mercury which most people know that he is a singer,
hinting at this being a biopic/music film and the name of the film ‘Bohemian
Rhapsody’ which is the name of one of the songs that Mercury wrote, showing that
this is a music film. Furthermore, the use of language has shown this is a music film
by the characters talking about music, instruments, tours a lot and this helps target
the film towards an audience that enjoys music, meaning that they would understand
and want to watch the film.
Format & Layout
Conventions specific to this type of
script
Dialogue is in the centre of the page
Actions go from the left to the right side of the script and scene changes do too, but
they are in bold
All character names in capitals (in the centre of the page).
This script has been done in a Courier font.
Page numbers are on the top right-hand side of the page.
The very first page is the title of the film
Voice over/off screen clearly indicated
Slug Line
Three-act script This is a three act as it starts with Freddie Mercury’s death in his home but then
goes back in time to the beginning before Freddie and his band became famous.
Then it progresses to how they became a band then when they were trying to get
noticed by the public. This entire film is partially narrated by Brian May and Roger
Taylor, who were bandmates of Freddie’s, narrate parts of Freddies life to an
interviewer who wants to know about more about the band and Freddie Mercury
himself. At the end of this film, I wouldn’t say that there is a very clear resolution, but
the resolution could be that Brian and Roger were able to talk about who Freddie
Mercury really was for the rest of the world to know instead of the press/news
making up lies about Freddie Mercury's live.
Angle of article The angle of this article is aimed towards adults or anyone who is a fan of Queen
and likes watching films about a person’s life. This is an inspirational film as this is
about the lead singer who was different because of his race and sexuality, how he
was trying to figure out who he was, how he rose to fame and how he became
classed as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock.
Style
i.e.
single-stranded/multi-stranded
linear/nonlinear
This is a nonlinear script as it goes from the past to the present quite a few times
because it shows Freddie Mercury’s death at the start and then the scenes change
from when Freddie was alive to when he died where is band mates talk about his life
to an interviewer. It is also a single-stranded script as there are two different
narratives happening at the same time, but they are talking about the same subject
as both band mates of Freddie, Brian May, and Roger Taylor, talk about Freddie's
life, in a way they are narrating his life.
Type
i.e.
fiction/nonfiction
This is fiction as it has been partially dramatized to make it entertain but it is also
about real life.
Unit 22: Task One
Understand scripted elements for a range of media products
TV SCRIPT: Dr Who
Type of script: Drama
Language The technical parts of this script are formal and elaborate. The dialogue is quite
informal, restricted and there is English slang within the script where some people
say call each other ‘love’ or say ‘hiya’ etc. This TV show was made to entertain the
audience as this is fast paced and a fictional show so none of this is real. The genre
of this is Sci-Fi. This is shown in the way that the Doctor talks about certain things,
like when she speaks about the Tardis, the DNA bombs and about the alien her
dialogue is a change slightly to formal as the situation is a serious and live or death.
Format & Layout
Conventions specific to this type of
script
Characters names in capital and in the center of the page
First page is the title of the program the series and episode number
Timings and music cues/timings are on the left-hand side of the page (this has been
done so when the people put everything together, they know when music should be
put in and for how long, so they do not do anything wrong).
Dialogue is at the center of the page
Scene changes are in bold and underlined
Slug Line
Locations
TV scripts are quite similar to film scripts, but the only difference is that TV scripts
have timings, music cue/timings on the left-hand side of the page
Three-act script This is a three-act script as it has a beginning which is where a boy has made a
video on YouTube, and he is talking about not being able to ride a bike and he talks
about ‘someone special.’ Then the scene changes and shows the same boy Ryan
Sinclair, and two new characters Grace and Graham O’Brien who are trying to help
Ryan learn to ride a bike there is then an inciting hook where Ryan goes down a hill
to retrieve his bike that he threw down there and he sees some sort of
‘alien/creature’ thing, decides to touch it then it disappears, and he calls the police.
Then we see Yasmin sorting out a parking dispute, complaining to her Sergeant that
she wants to do more than sort out parking disputes then she gets assigned to
Ryan’s case.
Then for act II we see, Grace, Graham O’Brien in a train along with another
passenger called Karl, everything seemed calm until something rams into the front of
the train making it come to a hult then Ryan and Yasmin find out and are on their
way to the train. Suddenly the new Doctor falls onto the train and defends Grace and
the others from the creature.
Then in act III they all help the Doctor destroy the creature successfully but sadly
Grace dies because of the creature, Ryan, Yasmin, Graham, and the Doctor attend
her funeral. You then see the rest of the YouTube video from the beginning and find
out that the ‘special person’ Ryan was speaking about was his nan. Then the
episode ends in a cliffhanger as Ryan, Yasmin, Graham, accidentally join the Doctor
to travel to a different planet but they are stuck in space leaving this as for the
audience to guess whether they will survive.
Angle of article I would say that this is aimed towards all teenagers and adults but slightly more for
the female audience as this new doctor is a female and this could be seen as
empowering for woman as the Doctor has always been seen as intelligent, strong,
and funny and has always been played as a male so now the Doctor is a female it
will attract more females to watch it.
Style
i.e.
single-stranded/multi-stranded
linear/nonlinear
In this episode it is multi-stranded as you see what Yasmin’s dealing with but also
you see what is happening with Grace and Graham O’Brien and Ryan Sinclair then
all their lives seem to collide together, and they meet the Doctor. This script is non-
linear as it starts with Ryan Sinclair who has put a video on YouTube talking about
how he cannot ride a bike and someone who is ‘smart, funny and caring’ then you
see the main story in chorological order and by the end of the episode you see the
rest of this video that Ryan made and find out that the special person he was talking
about was his nan as she sadly died.
Unit 22: Task One
Understand scripted elements for a range of media products
RADIO SCRIPT: Radio Five Live
Type of script: News
Language The dialogue is very formal and elaborate as this is the news which is made to
educate and inform the audience by telling them about current affairs in the world.
This has been shown by using words like ‘outspoken’ and ‘remarkable’
Format & Layout
Conventions specific to this type of
script
In words and out words (so that the producer knows when to stop/start recording)
Character names capitalized
Left to right paragraph prompts and dialogue
Durations in minutes
Timings/duration for all pieces of dialogue and action
Radio is quite different from the other scripts; the only similarity is that the names
are capitalized (like TV and Film scripts).
Three-act script In the news there is some form of a three-act script when they are talking about an
event that has already happened as they will tell you the beginning, middle and
end. However, if they are talking about an ongoing issue, they can only tell the
audience the beginning of how it started and the middle depending on how long the
issue has come about, but they cannot really tell you the ending as it is still
ongoing. For example, one of the stories is about a Russian spy (Mr. Litvinenko)
who is currently in hospital, we know the middle of this story, he’s in a serious
condition in hospital, but we don’t know the beginning like how and why he became
so ill, and we don’t know the ending like whether he will live or not.
Angle of article This would be targeted at British adult's and people over 18 because this is a
British news station and as they are of a mature age, they would understand the
elaborate language that is used, so they would want to know what is going on in
the world and whether it concerns them. I would say that this would be for any
class as the stories vary, for example. one is about Mr. Litvinenko, another is about
a man helping in Afghanistan, a car crash in Leeds, two ice climbers go missing
and an environment protest in Birmingham. I also think that this could also be for
any ethnicity as the stories aren’t just about things going on in England and various
subjects are spoken about.
Style
i.e.
single-stranded/multi-stranded
linear/nonlinear
This is a linear stranded script as the news talks about events that have happened
or are still ongoing, but they must speak about it in order otherwise this would
confuse the audience. I would say that the news is multi-stranded depending on
what is being talked about and whether there is one side to the story or not.
Type
i.e.
Fiction/Nonfiction
This is non-fiction as this is about what is happening currently in the world.
VIDEO GAME SCRIPT: Red Dead Redemption
Type
i.e.
fiction/nonfiction
Fiction as this is a TV show about some traveling through time and space in
machine called the Tardis and aliens exist.
Unit 22: Task One
Understand scripted elements for a range of media products
Language The dialogue in this game is very informal and there is a lot of slang like ‘trash’
‘hillbilly,’ etc. as this is set in 1911 when the Western American Frontier (Wild
West) still existed, and few people would speak formally unless you were a priest
or someone of a higher class. For the technical elements there is formal language,
so it is easier for the crew to read and understand, this is shown on the first page
as there is the title and every scene and mission is given in a numbered order to
make it neat and easy to read. This was made to entertain as this is a video game
for people to play and this is action packed and violent. The use of the word from
one of the characters ‘Telegram’ also hints that this game has been set in the past
as no one telegrams people anymore.
Format & Layout
Conventions specific to this type of
script
Characters names are not in capitals
Everything goes from the left-hand side of the page including the dialogue rather
than the center
Actions in square brackets [] but in the same format as the dialogue
Contents/chapters at the start of the script (done to help know how many sections
there are and what order they should be in)
The video script is also quite different from the others and the only simialrity is that
the dialogue goes from left to right like the News scripts.
Three-act script This game does not go along with the three-act script structure because the main
character gets killed near the end of the game and for the rest of the game you
play as his son. At the end you find the man who killed your father and as the
player you are forced to kill him and you walk away, this ending has been left open
meaning that there could be another game, or it could be left as that because the
son has finally gotten his revenge.
Angle of article This game is more aimed at males from 18 and older mainly because of this game
being set in a very masculine western fantasy and there is a lot of violence, blood,
and adventure in it. I would say that this game would be aimed at white males
predominately because the game lacks any form of diversity, and you very rarely
see people of colour in the game especially because of the time and place this
game is set where the KKK and racists were everywhere, and it was normalised.
Style
i.e.
single-stranded/multi-stranded
linear/nonlinear
This game is linear but there are a few times where time has moved forward a
considerable number of times but that is used to show the passing of time and skip
to a more important part of the main character’s life. This game is also single
stranded as you only play as one character, so you only get to see through their
point of view until they die then you get to see through the son’s point of view.
Type
i.e.
fiction/nonfiction
Fiction as the western ‘mythology’ throughout the game has been emphasized.

Style i.e. single-stranded/multi-stranded linear/nonlinear This is a nonlinear script as it goes from the past to the present quite a few times because it shows Freddie Mercury’s death at the start and then the scenes change from when Freddie was alive to when he died where is band mates talk about his life to an interviewer. It is also a single-stranded script as there are two different narratives happening at the same time, but they are talking about the same subject as both band mates of Freddie, Brian May, and Roger Taylor, talk about Freddie's life, in a way they are narrating his life. Type i.e. fiction/nonfiction This is fiction as it has been partially dramatized to make it entertain but it is also about real life.
  • 2. Unit 22: Task One Understand scripted elements for a range of media products TV SCRIPT: Dr Who Type of script: Drama Language The technical parts of this script are formal and elaborate. The dialogue is quite informal, restricted and there is English slang within the script where some people say call each other ‘love’ or say ‘hiya’ etc. This TV show was made to entertain the audience as this is fast paced and a fictional show so none of this is real. The genre of this is Sci-Fi. This is shown in the way that the Doctor talks about certain things, like when she speaks about the Tardis, the DNA bombs and about the alien her dialogue is a change slightly to formal as the situation is a serious and live or death. Format & Layout Conventions specific to this type of script Characters names in capital and in the center of the page First page is the title of the program the series and episode number Timings and music cues/timings are on the left-hand side of the page (this has been done so when the people put everything together, they know when music should be put in and for how long, so they do not do anything wrong). Dialogue is at the center of the page Scene changes are in bold and underlined Slug Line Locations TV scripts are quite similar to film scripts, but the only difference is that TV scripts have timings, music cue/timings on the left-hand side of the page Three-act script This is a three-act script as it has a beginning which is where a boy has made a video on YouTube, and he is talking about not being able to ride a bike and he talks about ‘someone special.’ Then the scene changes and shows the same boy Ryan Sinclair, and two new characters Grace and Graham O’Brien who are trying to help Ryan learn to ride a bike there is then an inciting hook where Ryan goes down a hill to retrieve his bike that he threw down there and he sees some sort of ‘alien/creature’ thing, decides to touch it then it disappears, and he calls the police. Then we see Yasmin sorting out a parking dispute, complaining to her Sergeant that she wants to do more than sort out parking disputes then she gets assigned to Ryan’s case. Then for act II we see, Grace, Graham O’Brien in a train along with another passenger called Karl, everything seemed calm until something rams into the front of the train making it come to a hult then Ryan and Yasmin find out and are on their way to the train. Suddenly the new Doctor falls onto the train and defends Grace and the others from the creature. Then in act III they all help the Doctor destroy the creature successfully but sadly Grace dies because of the creature, Ryan, Yasmin, Graham, and the Doctor attend her funeral. You then see the rest of the YouTube video from the beginning and find out that the ‘special person’ Ryan was speaking about was his nan. Then the episode ends in a cliffhanger as Ryan, Yasmin, Graham, accidentally join the Doctor to travel to a different planet but they are stuck in space leaving this as for the audience to guess whether they will survive. Angle of article I would say that this is aimed towards all teenagers and adults but slightly more for the female audience as this new doctor is a female and this could be seen as empowering for woman as the Doctor has always been seen as intelligent, strong, and funny and has always been played as a male so now the Doctor is a female it will attract more females to watch it. Style i.e. single-stranded/multi-stranded linear/nonlinear In this episode it is multi-stranded as you see what Yasmin’s dealing with but also you see what is happening with Grace and Graham O’Brien and Ryan Sinclair then all their lives seem to collide together, and they meet the Doctor. This script is non- linear as it starts with Ryan Sinclair who has put a video on YouTube talking about how he cannot ride a bike and someone who is ‘smart, funny and caring’ then you see the main story in chorological order and by the end of the episode you see the rest of this video that Ryan made and find out that the special person he was talking about was his nan as she sadly died.
  • 3. Unit 22: Task One Understand scripted elements for a range of media products RADIO SCRIPT: Radio Five Live Type of script: News Language The dialogue is very formal and elaborate as this is the news which is made to educate and inform the audience by telling them about current affairs in the world. This has been shown by using words like ‘outspoken’ and ‘remarkable’ Format & Layout Conventions specific to this type of script In words and out words (so that the producer knows when to stop/start recording) Character names capitalized Left to right paragraph prompts and dialogue Durations in minutes Timings/duration for all pieces of dialogue and action Radio is quite different from the other scripts; the only similarity is that the names are capitalized (like TV and Film scripts). Three-act script In the news there is some form of a three-act script when they are talking about an event that has already happened as they will tell you the beginning, middle and end. However, if they are talking about an ongoing issue, they can only tell the audience the beginning of how it started and the middle depending on how long the issue has come about, but they cannot really tell you the ending as it is still ongoing. For example, one of the stories is about a Russian spy (Mr. Litvinenko) who is currently in hospital, we know the middle of this story, he’s in a serious condition in hospital, but we don’t know the beginning like how and why he became so ill, and we don’t know the ending like whether he will live or not. Angle of article This would be targeted at British adult's and people over 18 because this is a British news station and as they are of a mature age, they would understand the elaborate language that is used, so they would want to know what is going on in the world and whether it concerns them. I would say that this would be for any class as the stories vary, for example. one is about Mr. Litvinenko, another is about a man helping in Afghanistan, a car crash in Leeds, two ice climbers go missing and an environment protest in Birmingham. I also think that this could also be for any ethnicity as the stories aren’t just about things going on in England and various subjects are spoken about. Style i.e. single-stranded/multi-stranded linear/nonlinear This is a linear stranded script as the news talks about events that have happened or are still ongoing, but they must speak about it in order otherwise this would confuse the audience. I would say that the news is multi-stranded depending on what is being talked about and whether there is one side to the story or not. Type i.e. Fiction/Nonfiction This is non-fiction as this is about what is happening currently in the world. VIDEO GAME SCRIPT: Red Dead Redemption Type i.e. fiction/nonfiction Fiction as this is a TV show about some traveling through time and space in machine called the Tardis and aliens exist.
  • 4. Unit 22: Task One Understand scripted elements for a range of media products Language The dialogue in this game is very informal and there is a lot of slang like ‘trash’ ‘hillbilly,’ etc. as this is set in 1911 when the Western American Frontier (Wild West) still existed, and few people would speak formally unless you were a priest or someone of a higher class. For the technical elements there is formal language, so it is easier for the crew to read and understand, this is shown on the first page as there is the title and every scene and mission is given in a numbered order to make it neat and easy to read. This was made to entertain as this is a video game for people to play and this is action packed and violent. The use of the word from one of the characters ‘Telegram’ also hints that this game has been set in the past as no one telegrams people anymore. Format & Layout Conventions specific to this type of script Characters names are not in capitals Everything goes from the left-hand side of the page including the dialogue rather than the center Actions in square brackets [] but in the same format as the dialogue Contents/chapters at the start of the script (done to help know how many sections there are and what order they should be in) The video script is also quite different from the others and the only simialrity is that the dialogue goes from left to right like the News scripts. Three-act script This game does not go along with the three-act script structure because the main character gets killed near the end of the game and for the rest of the game you play as his son. At the end you find the man who killed your father and as the player you are forced to kill him and you walk away, this ending has been left open meaning that there could be another game, or it could be left as that because the son has finally gotten his revenge. Angle of article This game is more aimed at males from 18 and older mainly because of this game being set in a very masculine western fantasy and there is a lot of violence, blood, and adventure in it. I would say that this game would be aimed at white males predominately because the game lacks any form of diversity, and you very rarely see people of colour in the game especially because of the time and place this game is set where the KKK and racists were everywhere, and it was normalised. Style i.e. single-stranded/multi-stranded linear/nonlinear This game is linear but there are a few times where time has moved forward a considerable number of times but that is used to show the passing of time and skip to a more important part of the main character’s life. This game is also single stranded as you only play as one character, so you only get to see through their point of view until they die then you get to see through the son’s point of view. Type i.e. fiction/nonfiction Fiction as the western ‘mythology’ throughout the game has been emphasized.
