The document provides annotated sketches and layout ideas for posters to promote a horror film called "What the...". The sketches include ideas for a teaser poster, theatrical poster, and quad poster. Details are given on color choices and placements of elements like the title, images, and credits to intrigue audiences. Suggested dates are also included. Actors like Zendaya, Winston Duke, and Lupita Nyong'o are proposed based on their experience in genres like horror and psychological thrillers.
2. For this sketch of this poster all these colours will be used as I am
thinking of using procreate to draw this poster. For this layout I have
placed the title at the top along with the tagline underneath. The main
image, in the middle, being the low angled house with a woman staring
out with a yellow light shining though. Then at the bottom is the
release date and Netflix logo along side it. I think this is a good layout
the title and tagline can be seen properly along with the date and the
Netflix logo. I have included the Netflix logo in every poster as this is
one of the requirements that needs to be in every poster when I read
the brief. I have made it so that the house is looming over the audience
to make them feel uncomfortable and then them seeing this woman
staring down at them will make them think that there is something
wrong with the woman and that she could be the antagonist for the
film. But it will also create a form of mystery as they don't know who
the woman is and what it is that she is staring at. Also, by doing this it
hints that this is going to be a horror film along with the use of the use
of the colour red, black and yellow fit the conventions of horror
posters. This is because red usually symbolizes danger, blood, like the
Doctor Sleep poster I researched. Then for black death like the
Poltergeist poster and then for yellow this will symbolize a character
losing control of oneself or to highlight the trauma a character is being
put through. It can also depict a shift in emotions or state of mind,
which will go with the woman standing at the window.

3. This is the second layout for the teaser poster. For this layout I have put
the release date at the top of the page so that it is the first thing that the
audience sees making them want to look at the rest of the poster to see
what this is for. Then at the bottom of the poster they will see the title
and the tagline and because the title and tagline is the last thing, they
see it may stick in their head longer and then when they see the
theatrical poster, they will know it is for the same campaign. When I
create this poster properly, I won't be putting the actual date I will put
coming soon as I want to leave the audience waiting to make them keep
an eye out for the theatrical poster as this will give more information. I
am thinking of having this film released on the 30th October as this is a
day before Halloween and my film is a horror film so most of the
audience would want to watch this either on Halloween or the day
before so this date would be the most sensible. To me I feel that the first
layout is better as it fits poster layout conventions the title being at the
top will be the first thing the audience will see. This instantly intrigue the
audience giving the name, What the...? something that most people say
when they see something they don't quite understand which is quite
catchy and most definitely stick in their head. This would then make
them look at the rest of the poster seeing the tagline the main image
and then the date along with the Netflix logo. This is very similar to most
Netflix teaser posters as the title and tagline are more important than
the date as there is no date yet, so the title is usually at the top of their
posters along with the tagline.

4. The colours that are used in the sketch of the corridor of this poster won't be in same
as the proper poster when I make it as this is only a rough sketch. The colours that I
am planning on having for the corridor walls is white and for the doors green. I am
hoping to have these colours because in horror films white represents the undead
and ghost which are part of this film, and the green will create sense of unease for
the audience and the protagonist as they will both know that something dangerous
and disgusting is waiting down the long corridor and it also hints at the supernatural
as this is a supernatural horror film. The colour of the writing however is the colour
that I am planning to use I will be making a lot of the writing white so that it is easy
to see as most of my posters will be quite dark, but the billing block will be in a light
grey colour as this is part of poster conventions as the billing block. However, the
bright yellow light will be used to light up the dark corridor in my proper poster as
this will be used to show anxiety, anger and frustration as this is Imani trying to find
her brother so she will be angry but also scared because she doesn't know what she
is up against. For the audience this will provoke anxiety as they do not know who this
character is and why they are going down this dark corridor by them self with a
baseball bat. I have also included the title, tagline, actor's names, billing block (I have
done this very roughly as it is only a sketch), and the release date. For this poster it
will have more information as this is the theatrical poster, so it needs to intrigue the
audience more by having the actor's names which will be a good selling point of this
film as having names like Zendaya, Rose Bryne, Lupita Nyong'o these people are
popular to lots of people, and they are incredibly talented actors so the audience will
know by seeing these names that the film will be good so they will want to see it.
Furthermore, most of these actors have been in horror/thriller films so by seeing
their name the audience should be able to recognize what genre this film will be.

5. This is another layout idea for my poster. In
this I have changed the placing of the
tagline and moved it underneath the title. I
do not like the placing of this as the tagline
interferes with the yellow light and makes
it hard to see the tagline. I feel the first
idea where the tagline is on above the title
is more successful as it is bigger and
clearer to see. However, I don't like how
the actor's names are at the bottom of the
poster I feel that I should put them at the
top as this is something that the audience
has been waiting for since the teaser
poster. I have included an age certificate
on this poster, but I need to find the
official one that Netflix use when I do this
properly as this is also one of the
requirements for this poster when I read
the brief.

6. For this layout I have placed the actor's
names at the top of the poster and moved
the title and tagline near the bottom of the
page. I think this works a lot better than
the second idea as the audience can see
the actor's names without it being
overwhelmed by the billing block and the
release date. Also, this is one of the things
that the audience would want to know The
long corridor creates a form eeriness
because it is dimly lit and long which fits
into the conventions of a horror film as
anything could jump out at you and it’s a
confined space. Also, the person holding
the bat creates a sense of suspense and
mystery as the audience can not see their
face so they will want to know who they
are. Furthermore, the audience will
question why they are holding the bat

7. QUAD POSTER LAYOUT SKETCH 1
This is the first layout idea for my quad poster. The main
image will be on the left-hand side of the page. The actor's
names, title, tagline, billing block, age certificate, release
date and Netflix logo are all on the right-hand side. I have
done this so that the audience will see the worried/scared
face and they will be instantly intrigued and look at the rest
of the poster to find the title and tagline etc. By seeing this
the audience will know that this is part of the same
campaign. Also, they will know that the person from the
theatrical is the same person in this quad poster because
their costume is the same. The background will be a
blurred-out party crowd and the main image will be
Imani's face looking scared/worried with messy hair. I
thought of this specific layout because the focus will be the
protagonist's facial expression, but it also allows the
audience to also see their surroundings, they are in a party
which is like the Insidious poster I researched where the
boy can be seen as the focus with a family house in the
background. By doing this it makes the audience question
why she looks so scared if she is in a party where people
should be enjoying themselves. This will then make the
audience look at the title tagline etc. already being
interested because of the protagonist then seeing the
information that it is a film will make them want to see it
to find out what happens.

This is the second layout for the quad
poster. This is the same as the first
sketch, but the writing is on the left-
hand side of the poster and the main
image is on the right-hand side. I think
the juxtaposition of Imani's face and
the party lights/crowds will intrigue
the audience and make them question
why this character is so scared and not
enjoying the party that is going on
behind them, creating a sinister feel to
the poster. For me I prefer the first
layout I created as I feel having
Zendaya's scared/worried face would
instantly grasp the audience's
attention because of her popularity,
and this would make the audience
look at the rest of the poster seeing
the title and tagline which I feel is
quite catchy and easy to remember.
9. ACTORS FOR THIS FILM
• For this film I would have Zendaya play as Imani Richardson because I feel she would fit the role great as
she has played a teenager in films like Spiderman and Euphoria therefore, she would be able to play
Imani as she is a 17-year-old and a good actor. Also, she is a well-known actress in this generation
meaning that a lot of people will find out about this film and want to watch it as she is the protagonist in
this film.
• For Orion Richardson I would have Jahi Di'Allo Winston to play this character as I think he will fit the
role. He is well known but not as well known as Zendaya, but he has been in a film called 'We Have a
Ghost' which was only on Netflix where he is one of the protagonists in this film some of the audience
might recognize him.
• For Brayton and Ebony Richardson, I would have Winston Duke and Lupita Nyong'o play these two
characters. This is because they have been in a psychological horror film together called Us, so the
audience will know that this film could be a horror film and they are good actors.
• Then for Sarah and Jason Miller, I would have Rose Bryne and Griffin Gluck. Rose Bryne has been in a
supernatural horror film, Insidious, so I think she will be perfect for this role, and she too is very well
known. Then for Griffin Gluck he has played an antagonist in a fantasy horror tv show, Locke and Key,
and since he is the real antagonist in this film, he will suit this role well.
