SCRIPT TITLE:
Title of the film: What The...?
WHAT IS THE SCRIPT FOR?
This script is for Film4, the genre is supernatural horror, fiction and this will be a film.
BRIEF & WHAT YOU WILL PRODUCE
I have been hired to develop a script based on an original idea for a horror movie. I have been
told to pick a specific subgenre to target a particular audience, which will be supernatural
horror. There should be a clear protagonist, narrative and setting must be introduced. The film
should be a 15 certificate and the audiences will be both males and females, aged from late
teens to those in their 30s therefore the main characters will be teens, there will be adults like
parents and teachers, but they will not have a huge role in the film. I will only be writing the first
6 to 10 minutes of the film, which will be 6 to 10 or so pages.
CONTENT
Location: Suburbs in America in the 1980s
Characters: Black family, Mother (Ebony Richardson, 40), Father (Brayton Richardson, 40),
older Daughter (Imani Richardson, 17) younger Son (Orion Richardson, 15) they are a high-class
family.
White family but only a mother (Sandra Miller, middle aged) and Son (Jason Miller, 15) they are
also a high-class family.
There will be background school kids and teachers, but they do not play a significant role in the
film.
This is a film about the Richarson family moving into a new house in the suburbs as their son
Orion Richardson has been offered the chance to join a proper baseball team at a better high
school, the house has been rumoured to be haunted. During the night ghost figures of kids who
are wearing a baseball kit wonder the corridors and keep whispering 'get out' 'do not let them
feed on you', there are also creaking, and scratching that are heard through the corridors by
Imani children, but the parents cannot see or hear any of this. When the son meets his baseball
team, they all look freakishly the same but no one else seems to notice, but his sister does but
tries to ignore it. They also have a neighbour who lives opposite, a single white woman with her
son who is part of the baseball team Sarah Miller and Jason Miller. The Miller’s come across as
quite nice. The film will make it look like Sarah is the suspicious one as she keeps staring at the
Richardson’s house and tries to break into the house, but the Brayton scares her away not
knowing who it was, but she is innocent and has no clue what her son and the whole team have
done. Furthermore, you find out that the mother was sleep walking. Then the mother and
father go away for work leaving the sister in charge but her brother throws a big party so he can
fit in with his new baseball team, the whole of his year go to this party, and it is crazy. Suddenly
the brother gets snatched by a group of kids and goes missing. The sister then realizes and runs
around the house trying to find him. Turns out the entire baseball team took him down to the
basement (which have demonic symbols on the walls and floor) to feed on his soul, to make
them stronger and they have been doing this for years, luring fresh players onto their team
then killing them and getting away with it. Just as the ritual is about to finish the sister manages
to stop the ritual by bursting in and hitting some of the baseball team with a baseball bat. when
she is knocked most of the team out Imani carries her unresponsive brother and tries to get out
of the house it suddenly turns into a maze and the whole baseball team chase her, they look
pale, deep set bulging bloodshot eyes, their teeth are crooked, and they are snarling like feral
beasts. The sister manages to escape but she accidentally knocks an alcohol bottle over along
with a candle setting the whole house ablaze trapping the whole baseball team inside. Once
they are out the sister tries to wake her brother up who looks half dead, just as she was about to
give up, he suddenly wakes up and looks at the burning house. The film ends with the parents

coming back to see the house on fire and they both say 'What the...' Then the credits roll up to
George Benson ‘Give me The Night.’
GENRE
This genre will be supernatural horror because of the sighting of ghosts and demonic creatures
shown near the end of the film. This will be quite like films of this genre as I need it to be
obvious to the audience what genre this film is. The only difference will be the plot and
characters.
LANGUAGE TO BE USED & WHY
The script will be restricted as this is made for teenagers/young adults and this film is made to
entertain them also they need to understand the film so restricted language would be most
appropriate. Forms of restricted language that I will be using are words like ‘gonna’ ‘holy crap’
and ‘aw man’ etc. My script will reflect this by the language being quite informal and the main
characters are teenagers so young adults/teens would want to see this as the film is seen from a
teenager’s point of view. The genre will be conveyed through language when people from the
high school talk about the Richardson’s house being haunted.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
It will be linear, single stranded and will follow the 3-act structure breakdown.
3-act structure breakdown
Act I – We will be introduced to the Richardson family Mother Ebony, Father Brayton, son
Orion and their older daughter Imani are moving into their new house in the suburbs as Orion
has been offered a place in a good baseball team in a better high school. The scenery is
beautiful, and the house is huge. They all take bags out of their parent's car and start to unpack
inside the house. The parents meet their new neighbour who lives opposite, a single mother
Sandra Miller and her son Jason Miller who is the same age as Orion and part of the baseball
team. Later that night you see the mother staring at the Richarson’s house from her bedroom
window then she tries to break into the house, but the father manages to scare her away with a
baseball bat, but he did not know who it was. The next day Imani and Orion go to high school as
they are going in, they see the baseball team they all look freakishly the same their face, hair,
eyes, voice, posture everything they looked like they were a bunch of dolls put together, Jason
introduced himself and the team to Imani and Orion then tells Orion he’ll see him later for

practice in the afternoon. Imani is a bit unsettled after seeing the team telling Orion to be
careful and how similar they look but Orion brushes it off as to him this is an opportunity to be
part of something and make friends and if they did everyone else would notice. They go their
separate ways to class. Imani is in one of her lessons and she hears a group of kids sitting in
front of her talking about the house she moved into and how it is haunted, which makes her
feel even more unsettled. During the afternoon Orion is practicing baseball with the team and
they are enjoying themselves. In the evening, the Richardson family are having dinner and tell
their children that they will be going away for work later tomorrow morning and will not be
back until later in the morning the next day, meaning that Imani will be left in charge and tell
them both not to throw any party. During the night Sarah was staring out of her window at the
Richarson’s house again. Imani is lying in bed getting ready to sleep when she starts to hear
scratching on the wall outside her bedroom and the floorboards creaking outside of her door,
she quickly locks the door and sits on her bed rocking herself as something starts fiddling with
the door handle, whatever it is starts banging loudly on her door, then there’s silence and Imani
sighs in relief but suddenly her door bursts open a small group of dead kids wearing baseball kit
coming and all say in unison to leave the house then they scream and so does Imani.
Act II – The next day their parents have already left so Imani and her brother have breakfast
and get ready for school. Orion can tell that Imani does not seem herself, so he asks her if she is
okay, but she just says yes. They go to school, Imani, and Orion part ways. The baseball team
talks to Orion and tells him to throw a party at his house as his parents are not home, they peer
pressure him until he says yes but it is as if they hypnotize him into saying yes. Orion starts
telling people in his classes about this party and people start telling each other too. Imani stays
in school late to do some artwork but hears some students walking past talking about a party
that is being thrown at her house. The brother is already at home putting snacks out, lighting
candles and taking some alcohol out from a carboard and puts a ghetto blaster out and starts
putting some music on. Sarah is staring outside her window at the Richardson’s house again
while Orion sets up the party. Loads of people from the high school start showing up with their
friends, they all start partying, music is blasting, people are drinking, and Imani has run home to
see this. She can see Orion jumping and dancing around but suddenly she sees a group of boys
grab him, lift him up and take him further into the crowd.
Act III – Imani pushes her way through the huge crowd of people and manages to find her
brother down in the basement where the entire baseball team has him pinned down to the
floor with ancient symbols surrounding his unconscious body feeding on his soul. Before going
to find her brother, she picks up his baseball bat for defense and uses it on the baseball team
She quickly grabs him, put him in a fireman lift and runs out of the basement, the whole house
suddenly turns into a maze the entire baseball team chase her, their skin turns pale, their
movement becomes animalistic, they start growling, they look slightly scary/crazy like demons.
Imani manages to dodge them by throwing a few alcohol bottles at them while spilling some of
it on the floor. Imani finally finds the door to leave the house, but she accidentally knocks over
some lit candles just as she leaves with her brother, setting the rest of the house on fire and
trapping the demons inside. Imani then places her brother on the ground. He looks half dead,
she does cpr on him, but he is not responding she starts crying, suddenly Orion wakes up
gasping for air they embrace for a moment then their parents car rolls up to the driveway and
the mother and father see the house up in flames they both look horrified and say what the...?
Then the credits roll up to George Benson ‘Give Me the Night.’

ANGLE OF ARTICLE
Film4 Productions is a British film production studio. They produce a range of films that span
many genres and target various audience tastes. They are known for working with the most
distinctive and innovative filmmakers. I will reflect this in my script by having an original, new
idea and having my main protagonists as people of colour would be distinctive as this is
exceedingly rare to see something like this. My characters will be diverse in culture, gender, and
age for example there is a black family and a white family, and their males and females are in
this film. My film will show bias because my main protagonists are people of colour and
because I am a person of colour I would find it easier to write from this point of view. The
message of the film is about, how white privilege/abuse of power makes people think that
because someone is a sports player or white, they cannot do anything to hurt anyone, and they
will get away with it until someone stops them.
FORMAT & LAYOUT CONVENTIONS
Dialogue is in the center of the page. This goes under the characters names in the center of the
page again so that the actor can see their lines properly.
Actions go from the left to the right side of the script and scene changes do too, but they are in
bold. This includes actions throughout this script to help set the scene, introduce new
characters and anything descriptive goes into this part, which helps the actors and costumes
designers understand what the character should wear and how they should be behaving.
All character names in capitals (also in the center of the page) so that each actor knows when to
speak.
Script must be done in a Courier font size 12 as it is quite an easy font to read from.
Page numbers are on the top right-hand side of the page so that none of the pages become
mixed up.
The very first page is the title of the film so that the reader knows what script this film is for.
Slug Lines include the time of day, location and whether the scene is inside or outside (EXT or
INT) which is helpful for the set designer, so they know what the set is supposed to look like.
Voice over/off screen clearly indicated with use of parentheses next to the character name
and write “(V.O.)”

TARGET AUDIENCE
5. Unit 22: Task Two
Generate ideas and plan the script for a media product, in response to a client brief.
My primary audience is for females and males aged from late teens to those in their 30s. The
film will have a diverse cast with both genders represented in a prominent role there will be a
white single parent family (mother and son) and one family of colour (mother father son
daughter). The film will aim for a 15 certificate to entice a larger audience therefore there will
be a bit of swearing, restricted language, jump scares a bit or gore but not too much as this is
supposed to be a 15 certificate. Also, because the protagonists are 15 to 17 years old, the
audience that are teens/young adults will be more interested as it is a film seen from someone’s
point of view at the same age.
My secondary audience will be anyone that likes watching supernatural horror movies that are
not too graphic but are interesting throughout and have a few jump scares. Also, it will be
targeted at an audience that likes watching films set in the 1980s period, for them this film
could be nostalgic, also for them the period will be obvious because of the use of costumes,
props, cars, the way the setting looks, and the music used. Also, this film could intrigue fans of
Stranger Things as the time period is set at the same time as my film so they may want to see
this also because this is a film they won’t have to wait for a new season, and they will be
satisfied knowing what the ending is and won’t have to guess if there will be another film.
