2. Initial Responses and Idea Generation
Log your initial thoughts regarding the set brief in this document
What stories could you use? How do you feel about the different potential
formats? What are the positives about this project? What could be some difficult
aspects? Etc
Use the format on this document to guide this response – some are set as a
question on one slide, but you should look to add further slides as necessary
3. Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• The tale goes, in 1953 an apprentice plumber was installing a new central heating system
in the cellars of the Treasures House when he suddenly heard a distant sound of a horn
soon followed by a great carthorse emerging through the brick wall, ridden by a
dishevelled Roman soldier. The ghostly battalion moved into a recently excavated area
showing that they were walking on an old Roman road - the Via Decumana - buried 15
inches below the surface. Now all visitors are invited to explore the haunted cellars of the
house.
• I have gravitated towards this story because of how unusual it is and the fact that there is
not really any explanation on how it happened. Also you never really hear of a ghost story
that includes a horse.
4. Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• York Museum – 1953
• This is a frighting story of a caretaker for the York Museum named Mr Jonas you saw a
‘unusual looking little old man’ after hearing noises in the museum after locking it up,
they then heard footsteps above them so Mr Jonas decided to check it out and that then
when they saw a man pacing around the room, Mr Jonas then approached the man
assuming that he had gotten locked in that room and was trying to help him, however
the old man then placed his hand on Mr Jonna's shoulder and then disappeared. The
man has been spotted in the same location multiple times but there is no information on
who the man is.
• This story intrigues me because of the unknown on who the man is and why he keeps
appearing in the same spot. There was also no records of an older man dying in that
museum which makes the situation more confusing as there is no real reason as to why
he is haunting the museum. However I may not use this story for my piece as I will have
no one to play the old man character.
5. Which stories have you researched and looked
as potential starting points?
• The York Minister – 1820s
• This is one of the most frequent ghost stories told from the York Minister. There two members of
tour group that decided separate form the crowd and then was alone wandering around the
building, they then get approached by a man in uniform and then walked closer to them and
whispered in one of their ears. The man was found out to be the brother of one of the women
and promised that whoever died first had to come and tell the other if the afterlife is real or not.
• I find this story interesting because of the meaning behind the ghost that appears at the York
Minister. There are many ghost story's that I hear that are all familiar but this story is different
because the ghost is actually related to the woman who saw the ghost, the ghost also
communicated with the woman by whispering something into her hear. I also like the fact that
the ghost is friendly and not like all the other stereotypical ghosts
• One idea for the story is that I use a similar format to this story but the ghost is viewed as a
creepy figure however it would then be friendly.
6. Which research into existing products has been the
most useful? Includes examples and explanations
• Research into the top 10 Ghost stories of York was the most useful as it
enlightened me into new stories that I have never heard of, this then
allowed me to think of some ideas when I am making my own ghost stories
because it the stories gave me inspiration. For example the story about the
girl who lost her brother but then saw her brother in a ghost form and he
let her know that there was an after life. This made me think that not all
ghosts are necessarily bad but are somehow related to us and shows me
that relatives of mine could be ghosts. I wanted to make a story on this but
tweak it so that the ghost is viewed as evil but at the end you realise that
the ghost is a relative that is looking over them
7. Which production format [drama, narration,
etc] do you feel fits your idea best and why?
• I feel like a drama is best suited because I want the scenario to be intense
and its harder to create that through a narration only with no video to go
along with it, a drama also works well with my idea because I wanted to
use actors to portray different characters
8. Which story have you settled on and why?
• I Have chosen the story with the with the brother who died and came back
to see his sister in the after life to tell her that there is an after life, I feel
like this is best suited for me because I wanted the sister to be around the
house hearing strange noises and started looking around the house to see
what the noises were. This would then lead to the sister seeing a ghost and
becoming really scared but then realises at the end of the video that t was
her brother. This story allows me to use different sfx to create a more
intense situation.
9. If you had to sell your story quickly, what is the
title and the logline?
• An Old Friend
• Beth is living alone in her house after her older brother has recently
passed, however she is starting to hear some strange noises and decides to
check them out!!
10. What ideas have you had for sound effects,
narration and storytelling?
• I had the idea of using my stairs in my house to create a creaking sound
effect because I feel like this would imitate the video perfectly as I was
planning to have a shot where I show the actor looking at the stairs and
then hears a noise of it creaking and gets frightened
• Another sound I had in mind is a simple whistle sound that could be
coming from the chimney but Is giving of a creepy vibe and adds to the
intensity.
11. Initial feelings…how do you feel about the
project currently?
• I feel as if I have a good idea and plan for what I should be doing and I
understand how to use sounds to imitate what is happening in the video. I
feel like it is new and refreshing as we are now dealing with sounds instead
of mainly focusing on the video only
Editor's Notes
Think about creative and technical elements, it could be you like the idea of evoking a sense of place or you have the perfect person in mind as a narrator? Or are you keen to start writing a story and take it from there? Ideas and development are personal, try and get across where your idea is and what has got you to that point.
Add as many slides as needed from the work you did on Urban Legends, York Ghost stories and other inspirations you have considered. Which story have you gravitated toward and why?

Think about why this idea rather than any other…is it because it has the best scope for sfx, narration, etc. Reasons can be personal, but you need explain them.
A logline is a one sentence description or summary of the audio story. Loglines distill the important elements of your script/story—main character, setup, central conflict, antagonist—into a clear, concise teaser. The goal is to write a logline so enticing that it hooks the listener into your idea
