• Contos de terror em audio - Factual production
This story is told by a narrator, who tells the story about a girl that is afraid to walk
near a haunted house. Unlike soundscape style, this story is more easily
understood because of the narrator; in this specific piece, the narrator tells the
story while the foley represents how the story would sound like in real life. So as
the narrator is walking the audience through information, the foley brings realism
to the story, for example, when the gate of the haunted house falls in front of the
girl you can hear in the background the sound of the metal hitting the floor; this
kind of effect plus the narration . The background music used in this piece sets a
dramatic and scary tone, exploring the emotions in the public, making them feel
as if they were in the same situation as the girl in the story, and so, making the
scary effect more efficient. The tone of the narrator is also important to create
that effect, he tells the story with a mysterious and deep voice which matches the
environment the piece is creating.
All the elements in this piece go well together because they all form part of a
consistent theme, that create the chilling/scary vibe they wanted to create.

• The archers – Audio drama
On this audio drama, unlike the last piece I analysed, they don’t use background
music to set the tone for the scene; the background is only composed of the foley
effects, that recreate the sound of daily tasks and actions such as sweep the floor
or have a cup of coffee. And while these sounds are happening on the
background, the actors are reading their lines, which alongside foley create an
audio drama easy to understand because all that happens in it are things that
happen on our own lives. The Archers is a contemporary drama in a rural setting,
and to create the illusion of location, they use a countryside dialect and accent
while the foley brings the sounds of things you would hear if you were on the
country side such as diverse farm animals, like sheep and chicken.
All of those elements create an effective story that place you right into the
countryside environment.

• Haunted house - Soundscape
Contrasting the two last pieces analysed, this one does not use voice
over at all, and the story is created only by using foley. The background
is not constituted by a music but instead, at the first part of the story,
loud lightning, while we can hear the main character steps heading to
the haunted house; the lightning sounds on the background end when
she enters the house. Throughout the soundscape the creator used
lots of scary elements to create this haunted house environment such
as scream, crying, rapid small footsteps, knife in the wood etc; the end
suggests that something happened to the girl because we can hear her
scream and cry and someone starts singing a creepy song and we can’t
hear the main character again after that. In this piece it is used several
sound effects typically found in horror movies and haunted houses and
used that to create the illusion of a location, such as wood and doors
creaking, thunder, creepy music, footsteps etc.
9. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction
My idea is to either select a story of Brazilian urban myths, worldwide
urban myths or create my own story and make my piece in a
documentary style, retelling that story and using foley to bring that
story to life.
I chose to do a documentary style in my project because I feel like the
other formats to do this are not right for what I want to do because
1) Audio drama requires working with several people and that is not
practical because the more people we work with, the more likely it
is to have problems and trouble to stay in schedule;
2) Soundscapes are not easy to make because to tell a story with only
audio it would require to be very precise and careful with the
things I put otherwise no one would understand the story I’m
trying to tell.
So in conclusion it is best for me to make it a documentary style
because I can use less people and so it’ll be easier to complete.

16. Story
A woman named Alice and her baby go live in an old house where
decades ago a woman named Valerie committed suicide after her baby
died in a tragic fire. No one in that neighbourhood wanted to live in
the house because they all were afraid of what they called “The
mourning soul”; but Alice was a single mother and did not have the
money to buy another house, and for the price they were asking, she
thought buying that house was a good deal. But as soon as she moves
in strange things begin to happen, and Alice begins to believe the
stories the neighbours were telling her. Alice’s son was the same age
Valerie’s son was when he died and now Valerie wants to steal Alice’s
child so he can be with her forever.
17. Script Draft
Once upon a time, in a small and remote town, a mother lived happily with her baby
in a house white like snow and a beautiful garden, full of small and colourful flowers.
Her name was Valerie, she lived alone with her baby and she had no one else in the
world besides him; Although alone, she was very happy and loved her baby more than
anything in the whole world. One day, Valerie had to go out and could not take her
son, so she asked her neighbours to look after the child while she was away; later in
that day, when she arrived in the street of her house she saw in the distance the fire
spreading by the house of the neighbours. She ran as fast as she could and screamed
for help, but when she got there, it was too late; the fire had completely consumed
the house, taking with it the neighbours and her baby. Valerie was desolate, she could
not bear the pain of living without her son; then on a dark and cold night while the
blood moon shone in the sky, Valerie went to the kitchen and slit her own throat with
a kitchen knife; while she bled to death and the floor was impregnated with the
metallic smell and the redness of her blood, she cried thinking that in death she would
finally find her lost son. But what she couldn't imagine is that the blood moon would
trap her soul forever in that house, doomed to wander alone for all eternity. The
house, once pure and beautiful, was now plagued, nothing else grew in the ground,
the white of the walls turned into a sad mixture of grey and brown.
18. Script Draft
The house kept rotting, stuck in time and pain, and with it, Valerie’s soul was
corrupted as well; as years passed, no one wanted to get too close to the house, the
chilling energy that the house exuded was strong enough to scare away even the
bravest people; Valerie became a local myth, to which the citizens referred to as “The
mourning soul”. Many years later, someone bought the house; her name was Alice,
she was a single mother and didn’t have money to buy a better house, so she was
determined to transform that horrifying house into something liveable. Many tried to
warn her about the house but she didn’t believe in ghosts and thought that people
being afraid of a house was very funny. By an unfortunate twist of fate, Alice’s son was
the same age Valerie’s son was when he died, and Alice would soon regret moving to
that house. After she moved, strange things began to happen around her son; one
night when Alice went to check on her son, she could swear, for a brief moment, she
saw a white figure standing next to her son’s crib, looking at him while reaching out to
touch his head. She ignored the whole thing and went back to sleep, thinking she was
just tired and nothing was happening with her son;
But Valerie, always watching quietly in the dark, looked at that little baby as if he were
hers, and already had her dark heart wrapped around him.
19. Script Draft
There, in the middle of the night, looking at that fragile little creature, Valerie she
decided that baby was hers, and they had to be together for all eternity.
Alice hears a loud noise coming from the baby’s room, she runs to see what
happened, but suddenly the corridor seemed infinite, and no matter how much she
ran, she could not reach the door; with the door open, Alice watched as Valerie
disappeared with her son in the darkness, and while singing a lullaby, Valerie claimed
him as her son, while saying “We will be together forever my baby”.
The next day, the neighbours found Alice’s dead body on the corridor, no one knew
what happened, and the baby was never seen again.

27. Research
• My research helped me to understand how a horror audio story is made
and what I needed to make my story scary and believable.
• I could have done more research on effects, I couldn’t find much and my
research lacked on effects; if I had gone more into it, my product would
have been better.
28. Planning
• I planned enough time to do all of my project and and edit, I had a
schedule that would help me get m project to where I wanted.
• I didn’t plan enough time for problems I would have along the way and
that made my product fall apart and not be what I wanted.
29. Time Management
• I did not manage my time well, I could not finish my well project in time
because I didn’t expect I would have so many problems along the way and
that they would prevent me from completing my work to an acceptable
standard.
• If I had managed my time well I would have had the time to actually do
everything I planned for my product.
30. Technical Qualities
• Compared to existing product, my work lacks quality an and detail, my
product is very simple and not complicated; the only good thing about it is
that the narration is original and recorded with a professional microphone
and the story is as well, and I applied a voice effect so it would sound
more scary.
31. Aural Qualities
• Overall, my work is not good; the narration was okay, due to the
microphone used, and the background music is good as well; the story is
original and long; however I didn’t use many sound effects which would
have made my story more believable and scary;
• If I had the time I would have added more sound effects and put a scarier
voice effect;
• I don’t think the whole thing was very creative but it was all original;
32. Audience Appeal
• I believe that if I had completed my work in time my audience would have
liked it because the story included several scary elements that if I had
worked well would have been good.
Editor's Notes
Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products.
Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel
Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work?
Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
