Experiments
Foley
Positives: When considering the end product produced around the Foley work, present in
the hyperlink below, and in regards to positives in this task, it evidently will benefit the production
of my main project subject task. Initially, it is obvious that a wide variety of techniques/and or skills,
have been established in my work displayed across the YouTube platform, all of which help portray
the elected scene from ‘Shaun Of The Dead’; these predominantly consist from creating the sounds
necessary, using obscure objects in the surrounding area, syncing these previously generated
modulations in time with the videos actions, and using the allocated software to form the end
product of the Foley Task. In having learned a lot of new process in this specific assignment, it will
effectively help myself preserve the main project when due to making it in the recent coming times;
this also means that a more efficient use of time for the process in demonstrated, as no delays in
learning new aspects/functions is required in having already studied these features across the
accustomed software.
Negatives: In regards towards the main Foley task, once again, there however are
unnecessary/negatives towards the production of this assignment; this primarily comes under an
extensive use of time, of which could be used more effectively with the main project rather than
just experiments. As it is predominantly just to gain a further interest/knowledge into the audio
production around TV, film and of general video editing, this time ‘wasted’ could be used more
effectively in the production of the main product of the task in hand.

Improvements: Furthermore, and finally in concluding this section, there is an extensive
assortment of improvements that I would adjust to suit the videos needs more; these mainly fall
into the categories of reducing/eliminating the wind background noise, and implementing more
sound effects to reflect more actions/objects that are present throughout the course of the video.
Initially, coming under reducing/eliminating background noise, this predominately being the wind,
is necessary to reflect the scene more, as surrounding buildings will reduce this as implemented.
However, it is important to mention that I wouldn’t completely remove this effect, as for in
sequences where he walks in the middle of two roadways, it is very effective and realistic towards
my audience; this I mainly because the enclosing area of buildings prevent the wind from reaching
the main character (Simon Peg ‘Shaun’), whereas in the middle of the street it is much more
susceptible to these issues. Additionally, another justification to the product would be by adding
further object/people sound effects from nearby things; principally these would consist of natures
course of movement (wind, bushes, trees etc), more zombies, and possibly screams. In adding these
supplementary effects, it would generally make the product much more engaging, and realistic,
through believable
situations actions and sounds, all of which are intended
feature to regularly include in any film, TV and or video
across the platforms.
Recording
Experience: When introduced to the task in hand, a sense of confidence was
present, yet further information regarding creating each sound through everyday
objects creates a further challenge to confront. Initially, after the first introduction to
the assignment, a contemporary urge to list all required sounds was essential to
making a well produced Foley, all of which would overlay the muted track from ‘Shaun
Of The Dead’; all of these, of which were necessary in reflecting the video, had been
listed after this slide, including what objects may work alongside the tracks actions.
Furthermore, it was now the occasion to commence recording these sounds that are
required for the task. During this stage, some initial ideas, regarding what objects to
use in recording the different sounds, predominantly the opening and closing of the
gate, were of difficulty in resembling the specific wooden gate; in challenging this
thought, we simply walked around the college finding a range of different props/and or
things to resemble the action. In completing the sound of the gate, we had found a
welding mask, in the studio we used, that was extremely squeaky, in realizing this it
seemed most appropriate for the role of the gate; it is also important to mention that
other objects that we struggled to find noises suitable were similarly confronted.

The Archers
-Dialogue: Upon reviewing an episode of ‘The Archers’, specifically one from the 26th
June 1983, it holds a extensive use of dialogue throughout. Initially it is obvious that the use of
speech between two or more characters is used to evoke different attitudes within the characters,
as this can portray the different ways in which a situation is approached in the narrative. Alongside,
it is also used to emphasize different characters and the scenic area they are situated in, such as a
farmer is regularly stereotyped around the countryside, differing effectively against a business man
who is otherwise associated in the urban background of a city.
-Sound effects: Furthermore, in regards to ‘The Archers’ podcast narrative, sound
effects are also used throughout , and at a frequent rate. Originally it is evident that without sound
effects implemented, the whole narrative would be regularly misunderstood and very monotone in
just having the characters talk to one another; additionally, this helps define the importance of
sound effects, predominantly because without them it would be boring, but also as it helps
emphasize certain situations that characters are in. Examples of these which customarily appear in
narrative mainly consist of: farm animals (sheep, cows, chickens etc), background conversations
(usually in a public area), footsteps (evoking a character moving), munching (when a characters
eating, and many more.

-Music: Next, as it serves an important role in representing and introducing its audience to
the show, is the music. Positioned at the beginning of each episode, the music, serves a role is
portraying the beginning of another narrative strand, of which is present beyond each new chapter
in the show. It is also important to recognize the tune that the music is denoted at, primarily a
much more joyful, and happy connotations are set as the use of the instruments, these consisting
of multiple violins and a flute; alongside this, the tune is fairly repeated at a quick rate, this can
suggest that the narrative moves along rapidly, whereas other ideals evoke that it represents the
countryside lifestyle ( ‘The Archers’ show theme) effectively instead.

Doctor Who (The Master)
-Dialogue: Upon reviewing an episode of ‘Doctor Who – The Audio Drama’, specifically the
one called ‘The Master Confronts Eight’ in 25th April 2018, it holds a thorough utilization of speech
between characters to further emphasize the seriousness of the current situation and scene that
is being portrayed here. Initially it is obvious that it is used to evoke the narrative that is situated in
this scene specifically, as it holds an importance in understanding throughout the audience
watching; alongside this, a lot of emphasize and use of a monotonous tone on particular words is
used, such as with the words ‘suffers’, ‘master’ and ‘need’, all of which help define the viewpoints
from each character portrayed in this drama present.
-Sound effects: Furthermore, in regards to the ‘Doctor Who’ audio drama, sound
effects are essential in defining the scenario of this segment in the drama, such as with touching
the ‘pressure vessel’ and ‘footsteps’ as each individual character moves around. Otherwise, with
the removal of these diegetic sounds, of objects/movements being heard in the scene, this scene
could slightly be misunderstood; specifically, in having some of these sounds abolished from the
sequence, it would’t significantly differ the scenario’s understanding in the audience, as minimal
sounds are present, yet it does further help define the situation whilst also supporting in evoking
the narrative more, all of which are intended aspects to frequently use in their audio dramas.

Doctor Who (The Master) - Continued
-Music: Next, as it serves a very significant value in representing and introducing its
audience to important scenes within the ‘Doctor Who’ audio drama, in its current situation where
the two masters confronts each other, music is important. Such as when the episode begins, a
slight use of music is obvious, in the manner of a rising bass in connoting a tense situation, of
which it is, is present; this evidently represents the beginning of a serious episode to its audience,
as for this is used frequently across all of their episodes, signifying these ambitions that are
displayed. Furthermore, a much more concealed value in the use of music here is when certain
expressions upon their conversation turn the topic, such as when the doctor questions ‘eights’
responsibility, and the music turns up in a more tense and higher pitch way; the use of music here
connotes the importance of the conversation, effectively signifying towards its audience a moment
of concentration that is required. This is also reflected further on in the episode, further portraying
similar properties and characteristics, engaging the audience more.

Mr. Nightmare
-Dialogue: Upon reviewing an episode of ‘Mr. Nightmare’, specifically the one called ’10
Really Creepy True Stories’ in 27th March 2015, no dialogue is present between two or more
characters, this is predominantly because it is a single narrator displaying these stories single
handedly; otherwise, if the definition was to come under somebody talking, this would suit the
requirements flawlessly, as the narrator from the YouTube channel ‘Mr Nightmare’ talks nonstop
throughout the course of the 20 minute video.
-Sound effects: Furthermore, serving more of a frequently used purpose, is the sound
effects implemented into the YouTube video. Originally, it is evident that without these sound effects
in place throughout the video, the narrative could be misjudged and much more monotone towards
its audience. These sound effects denoted are predominantly associated with eerie sounds described
within the video itself, such as when an unusual creepy sound screams, all of which is a reoccurring
theme to create a threatening and fearful atmosphere within their audiences watching. Furthermore,
associated with these creepy sounds, it really does engage the audience more in being able to relate
some of these sounds stated in the description to real life situation, all of which does create intriguing
factors alongside these other various amount of stereotypical horror related emotions, that are
intended to features to incorporate in their sources created for our entertainment.

-Music: Next, as it serves a very significant course in representing and introducing its
audience to the horror and creepy values within his work, is the music that is used throughout the
course of all his YouTube videos. Before moving too forward, it is important to recognize that it is
the music he uses of which evokes these wide range of feelings in his audiences, predominantly
coming under either anxiousness, fear, and or isolation, really makes the stories more believable,
of which are intended features to reflect throughout his work and his audience when portraying
the horror genre of mainly ghost stories; alongside this, these values make it much more engaging
and intriguing, almost persuading his new audiences to watch further, and or previous episodes,
boosting his popularity worldwide to a variety of different people. Most of his music is gathered
from another youtuber called ‘Kevin MacLeod’ who publishes these creepy tunes for free use.

Story 1
Brief Background Information: There is a family, living in a rough area in
Luton, who as a total are 3 of them, all of which live a happy content life together; yet with
recent issues, are struggling with money and bills to pay for their accommodation. The family
consists of: a teenager called Ryan (aged 16) who loves playing football with his local friends, a
primary school kid called James (aged 9) who enjoys playing Fortnite and video games along
with his brother, and finally the mother of the two called Natalie (aged 43) who enjoy company
with her children yet recently got fired from a job in photography.
The family love each other greatly, but that was affected when the husband of Natalie, the
father of the two boys, disappeared 1 year ago in a supposed hit and run car crash upon the
date 20th July at about 6:30pm when returning from work.
Story 1 - Continued
Narrative: The family lived their regularly, unaffected and content lives going to work and school; yet this
day was different. Remarking the day their father died, it was the 20th of July at 6pm, coming up to a year of their
father being dead. Natalie and James were both at home, in the comfort of each other; whilst Ryan was currently
just closing down the shop he was working in throughout the day.
When turning of all the lights for the day, and being the only one of two who were there, he hears the sound of
footsteps from across the shop. Looking over, and in interest as there isn't meant to be anyone, nothing is in sight.
Yet suddenly a pair of shoes falls to the ground from behind him. Turning quickly, there is nothing to be seen yet a
note of one of the shoes stating ‘tick tock goes the clock, 30 minutes left until your gone upon the fog’. In slight
shock and worry on the unknown, he quickly closes the shop, scraps the note, and leaves to go home. Now at the
house, it is 6:15pm, and Ryan is with his mum. As he is about to mention the note, a knock on the door occurs.
Natalie opens the door to nothing on the other side, yet it was incredibly foggy; covering the whole street, apart
from a lone clock in the middle of the road. With slight confusion she closes the door a sits back down. 10 mins
later, it is now 6:25, another knock occurs. Opening the door, there is now a sympathy card on the door, it reads
‘Tick tock goes the clock, 5 minutes left your you're all gone upon the fog’. This worries the family, and they close
the door once again. 5 minutes later, their grandfather clock books for 6:30, remarking the disappearance of their
father. A knock occurs on their door. Opening the door cautiously, on the other side is a newspaper. Picking up the
newspaper they realize the main title has each of their names on it. ‘The death of mother Natalie, teenager Ryan
and young James follows their recent disappearance of being unable to find them amongst all odds’. This is then
followed by a misshapen shape in the fog behind. Their father stode in the middle of the road. In shock they run
towards him, wanting to greet him in happy arms. However, as they get closer, he gets further away. Still moving
forwards, they are now in the middle of the road when suddenly….. The sound of a car horn grows louder and
louder and then into a sudden thud.
Story 2
Brief Background Information: The main characters of this plot consist of a
teenager called Timothy, otherwise known as Tim from the narrator and his local friends, whom
is aged 16 and is currently working a lot as its his summer term in a part time job at a shop in his
nearby town. The other character called Helen is Tim’s mother, she is aged 43 and also works in
the nearby town but only 4 days a week as she has mental struggles to keep up with, as the
doctor suggested. They live in a peaceful village nearby to the town, called Akworth, that the
family have all grown up in from being young. The family very much so appreciate each other,
and as a result of their close bond between them, regularly share their emotions and or
experiences with one another when returning from work/school or whatever more.
Story 2 - Continued
Narrative: On a regular day I would get a lift with my mum to some part time work in the nearby town:
earning a bit of money, I decided to up my amount of days working at the shop. An issue with this then appeared,
my mum couldn't pick me up to return home from work, and so as a result of this I had to walk back; this wasn't
much of an issue as it was only a 30min trek, but it was a bit disturbing passing some of the old abandoned
buildings. After a regular day working, it turned to me finishing and coming home, yet this time it I was walking
back. Prepared and having a feeling of tiredness I started my hike. After awhile I then suddenly approached some
weird abandoned houses, they always gave me the creeps, but nothing too much to stop me from passing by. Yet
this time it was different. A sudden noise came from inside a specific building. An old single house, not too
expensive, not too new but older fashioned. In slight confusion and fright, as they always gave me the creeps, I
picked up the pace looking behind me frequently. Nothing else occurred but I rushed back home as I had instantly
become frightened. Arriving home it was obvious my mum was intrigued and slightly concerned for myself,
following I told her. In further interest my mum told me to take a picture of the palace, as she couldn't quite
understand where and what I was on about.
In a weeks time it had come the day once again to walk home, yet this time I was much more cautious. Approaching
the house slowly I had taken a quick picture of the house then decided to rush past it in worry of the inevitable to
occur. Nothing happened, which shocked me, so I decided to return slightly keeping my distance and watched the
building from a distance. Upon looking back a scream bellowed from the direction of the building. Then to my side.
And then silence. In instant shock I ran back home, which was quite a while off, doing the same as before,
frequently checking behind me incase of anything following me. This time though, there was something. A tall black
figure in the middle of the path behind me in the distance. I continued to run back until, arriving. At home my mum
was shocked, telling her the story I then resolved to presenting the picture I had taken. Displaying the image from
my cell phone, it appeared the figure was in the window, peering down. We called the police, they arrived at the
location but nothing was found.

Working Title:
Abandoned.. Or not?
Audience:
The audience, of which is not stated within guidelines, but presumed across the main category and project idea,
consists of predominantly ghost infusiates. Initially, coming under the both very obvious factors of my audience,
my ghost story seems both suited to the male and female gender equally, alongside towards any age category
ranging from what I would say of 14 – mid 60s. Originally, in regards to the gender, it seems most appropriate
that’s its targeted equally between the two genders; this is mainly because paranormal experiences, such as the
one being described across my audio project, can happen to anyone at any given time randomly across their
lifespan. Furthermore, as a result of the previously mentioned allegation, this similarly associates with the age
category being from anywhere between the ages of 16 – around 65; this primarily begins from 16 onwards, as any
younger audiences may become worried and or upset, otherwise with being suited up to the age of 65 (about) is
because stereotypically very old people aren't as much interested in events such as these being narrated. Next, as
suited to peoples social statuses, this would seem also satisfactory to a large range of people due to similar
reasons as before; however, in making this more profound, I would say its more engaging for audiences under
either the working and or lower statuses, this is mainly because I figure when groups of people are poorer than
others they can use audio collections, and or video as a way of escapism from reality. And finally,
Subsisting under psychographic values, my project seems most befitting towards people whom find
ghouls/host/spectres interesting as a hobby and or profession, otherwise people who are easily intrigued within
controversial topics, such as the paranormal, would also be very suiting to my projects purpose.

Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
In regards to the product that I will evidently achieve in making for this project, this comes under a narrated ghost
story. Initially it is important to recognise that there are a range of different options when making this, either
including a simple narration throughout from one person, or having a repetitive use of dialogue to move the flow
of story forwards; in this case I would be mixing to the two together, in having include dialogue, as I strongly
believe this adds a sense of realism throughout my audience, alongside the obvious narration, that sets the
different atmospheres and scenes efficiently.
The main aim of this story, through my personal perspective, is to creates tension, slight fear and interest
throughout my audience; these are essential aspects to include in a project like this because, in past experiences
with work from predominantly ‘Mr Nightmare’, evoking powerful emotions such as interest and fear really
displays an audiences engagement with the source, all of which are greatly appreciated and necessary in making
a product that will do good across the media industry of sound. Next, and most finally, a set of 3 researched
products – Mr Nightmare, The Archers, and Doctor Who Audio Drama – will be annotated in full detail; in doing
so, aspects across all of these very popular audio concepts will be used within my own, as these are essential to
evidently helping produce an outstanding final product – of which is a key intention.
Planning
Script Draft
Draft: Once there was a young boy called Timothy, Tim for short as his friends and I would call him, and his
dad, George, whom both lived together in a small house, not too big, not too confined, just right for the two.
They lived in a small village on the outskirts of their local town, Dremthorp; they both worked, Tim’s dad in a
school as a substitute teacher, and Tim, at a part time job in a cramped café on the main street, taking advantage
of his long summer term so he could start earning a bit of money for himself. Their lives had been very busy, but
regular to one another people whom also lived in the village; some would even go to saying their joyful lives
were perfect, and their company amongst the village was essential and comforting. However in this story, all
their feelings changed in a very sudden and mysterious proceeding.
As follows, Tim and his dad, George, were both working busy on a Thursday. After returning home from their
both long shifts, finishing roughly the same time , and getting the same transport of his dads Suzuki Swift back,
Tim states
Tim: ‘Dad.’
George: ‘Sigh’ Yeah whats up
Tim: Lately work at the café has been really good for me. Ya know; earning a bit of money for myself. Welllllllll I
was just asking whether it was okay for me to do some more days. Basically I would be doing 5 days per week,
earning even more. Is that okay?
George: Ermmmm, yeah that should be fine. As long as your okay with getting back after finishing, that’s no
problem
Tim: Wait? Can you not pick me up, its not that far.
George: No its my day off
Tim: Dad, please its only 10 minu….
George: No! If you want to work more, and earn more money, then you will have to walk back on the pathway by
the old farm.
Script Draft - Continued
Draft: Without at once arguing, both Tim and George leave into separate rooms, resolving the situation between them.
It is now the next day and this is where things start to become a little bit weird. It is 5:00pm and so Tim has just finished work;
beginning his journey walking back, Tim sighs as he realizes it’s a 20 minuets hike, across the muddy pathways, lush green
fields, and then passing the old empty farm house to then finish his ‘gentle Stoll’ as hid dad would say. It has been about
15minuets since the last occurrence with Tim on his walk back, when from the corner of his eye an old dilapidated house
appears from behind the forested trees that disguise it from sight of others. It just sits there, in the middle of an empty patch
that’s surrounded by wildlife. Overgrown, wrecked and fragile, the building looks like it has be ravaged. It has always given him
the creeps when passing it, he sometimes thinks something is watching him from inside, so he usually picks up his usual
walking pace to avoid it, but nothing ever happens. However something did this time. When the building is just about to
disappear from sight, into the converted forest, Tim hears a gigantic thud of a sound coming from the direction of the house.
Sound effect: ‘Thud’
Instantly turning around, Tim looks the direction from where it could be heard. In slight curiosity and shock, he leans forward
with a few steps get a better view. In doing so another thud occurs, yet this time it was louder and more like a bang.
Sound effect: ‘Bang’
This evidently scared him and so ran back to the comfort of his dad whom had the day off, regularly checking behind him in
case of anything that follows.
Returning back home, Tim seemingly tells is dad.
Tim: ‘Panting’ There was something at the house. Something at the house back there.
George: What are you on about? Are you okay?
Tim: There was something back at the house that I passed. You know, that old one by the pathway.
George: I don’t know what you're on about. Are you okay?
Tim: There was someth…
George: Stop! I don’t know what you are on about. Look, you're here now, and you're safe. So just calm down a bit. Okay?
Tim: Okay. But there was something, there was two loud bangs.
George ‘Okay’ I believe you. Just go to bed, you're probably a bit tired after running back here and also after work.
Script Draft - Continued
Draft: Tim: There was something back at the house that I passed. You know, that old one by the pathway.

George ‘Okay’ I believe you. Just go to bed, you're probably a bit tired after running back here and also after

In realisation that Tim’s dad didn’t believing him, it seemed necessary to get evidence as he imagined how
embarrassing it would be if news spread around the village, and in the worst case, to his friends in town.
A week later, it has turned to the time that Tim was to walk back home again, yet this time he had prepped
himself for the unknown. This was now essential as one of his friends had discovered his ‘nonsense story’.
Moments later the house of curiosity once again appears from the unknown before his eyes. Instantaneously he
grabs his cell phone and takes a quick picture of the location, this was now good proof for the ‘imaginary place I
had made up’. Following from this it was my main goal to just get back home as soon as possible. It promptly
turned dark after that brief moment, and a sudden breeze of cold air rushed throughout me, making even more
anxious than what I was previously. Subsequently I hastily rushed off from scene talking to myself in a way of
calming myself.
Tim: ‘Panting’ Okay.. Okay. Lets get out of here before anything.
Script Draft - Continued
Draft: Almost immediately after a scream, powerful, intense and deafening makes my heart skip a beat. Blood
turns immediately cold, rushing everywhere in my body, as my nerves tense and hair stands on end.
Sound effect: ‘Scream’
Looking instantly into the direction of sound, all seems blind as the sun has now set and all that is visible is tall
silhouettes of tress overlooking me, and the sound of silence and the wind follows to my heavy breathing. A second
screams then occurs.
Sound effect: ‘Scream’
However this time it was behind me. Now shivering and tense throughout as the wind picks up, I legged it towards the
direction of my house and any light that is visible in the pitch black surroundings. Coming up to a long stretch of pathway
I seemingly turn around to something unforgettable in my lifetime. A big tall black figure stode, as black as black can be,
as deep as wolf's mouth in the harsh winter, it stared looking my direction from behind. Adrenaline suddenly dashes
around as the silence of me staring towards this thing seems entirely enticing and takes what seems a century to turn my
fixating eyes away from whatever stode strong and powerful in front of my sight. Finally after some time of my breath
catching in the wind, and the silence deafens my soul making me unable to scream for help, I ran. I ran faster and faster
and faster. I ran in hoping I wasn’t far away from what I hoped was safety. Evidently I did reach my front door, barging in
my dad immediately looks my direction in slight horror and worry.
Tim: THE FIGURE!! THERES SOMETHING, SOMEYTHING I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT WAS! PLEASE HELP
George: WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT? ARE YOU OKAY? Why are you still going on about this figure thing?
At this point I couldn't speak in the pure amount of shock and fear that had taken over my whole soul of feelings.
George: Is it that old house?
This seemed to bring me back from what felt like hell. So I got my phone out, and showed the picture. Both of us looked
at the picture, initially I was in fear, my dad in confusion. Then we realised something. Our faces turning pale and
shocked as we saw the figure in the picture. Peering down from one of the boarded up windows another powerful urge
of silence and shocked followed.
Script Final
Narrator: This is a story quite personal to me, emotionally and quite literally. It takes place in a
tranquil and minuscule little village aside from the more built up, urbanized town of
Demworth, this place called Ackworth. In the rural countryside, up the north of England, lay
these two isolated locations; it wasn’t too quite nor too busy, just right for the residents who
lived there. Two of them though, whom lived in the silent nearby village, sparked out of the
blue, differing to each other as they were very respected and appreciated to be part of the
village community. These are a teenager, called Tim, and his father, called George. They lived
together in a small off site detached cottage, small but spacious for them both. All seemed
perfect for them, until one day something, or someone you could say, changed their lives
forever. Something them and their appreciated locals will never forget.
Tim was a growing boy, learning new things each day, and excelling to have a better life with
his family; he regularly strived to do better in everything and he was currently working to earn
some money for driving lessons and university that was coming up quickly for him. Whereas
his dad had already been satisfied with life at the moment, just working 4 days a week and
enjoying the company with his son and the limited amount of stress with his job.
Script Final - Continued
As it falls, Tim had just arrived back home with his dad after working busy all day; it worked
out well as they both worked similar hours and in similar places, meaning they could both get
home using the same transport, his dads Suzuki swift. However this is where the story really
begins.
Tim: Dad!
George: ‘sigh’ Yeah, what's up?
Tim: Lately work has been really good, ya know, earning a bit of cash money for myself.
George: and?
Tim: And I was wondering if it was okay if I could do more days, whilst I still have the chance
before focusing on my GCSE’s after the summer. It would mean working on a Friday, if that is
okay?
George: I mean… ‘sigh’ yeah, that should be fine. Is the manager okay with you working
more?
Tim: Yeah he said that it should be fine.
George: Okay, well as long as your okay with getting back yourself, everything should be good.
Tim: Can you not pick me up? I mean its not that far, its only 10 minu…
George: No! Its my day off, you know I need some time to myself. Its only…
Script Final - Continued
Tim: Please dad, you know I don’t like walking back.
George: Its only a 20 minute walk back. ‘pause’ You'll be fine, its only past some fields and a
woodland. There’s nothing there anyway.
Narrator: Without of doubt it was obvious he wasn’t changing his mind, so I walked off, back
to my room, and sat on my bed playing video games for the remainder of the day.
Its now a week later, the day is Friday and I have just finished working my extra day. The shop
is now closing and so I inevitably start my ‘short’ walk back that’s ‘only 20 minuets’. 5 minutes
passes by, I'm still walking. Now its been 10 minutes, and I am still walking, now passing a long
stretch beside a field. And now its been 15 minutes, the last stretch is in sight when
something catches my eye. ‘long pause’ In the corner of my field of vision, when passing the
small woodland, an old dilapidated farmhouse emerges from the converted trees that blind it
from others whom walk pass it regularly. Only really realizing something is there, after walking
this trek multiple times before, curiosity pulls me over to investigate this abandoned
accommodation. Upon further investigating, the house is much more obvious and clear to see
how old and ravaged it is. I don’t know what from, or for how long, but it gives me the creeps
so I distinctively begin to walk away; when suddenly an apparent thud comes from the
direction of the house.
Sound effect: ‘thud’
Script Final - Continued
Tim: Hello? Who's there?
‘long pause’
Narrator: Doubtfully nothing happens, until when I turn my back to the begin walking away
again, now a band occurs from a far.
Sound effect: ‘bang’
Narrator: I’m a very cautious and paranoid person, so obviously I immediately ran back home
as it’s the only real place I feel comfortable to be in.
Returning home its noticeable that my dad was worried once I had rushed through the main
doorway and slammed the door behind.
George: Are you okay?!?!
Tim: There was something, I'm sure of it, at the forest.
George: Are you okay?
Tim: Yeah, I'm fine. There was something though, I'm sure of it, at the house by the forest.
George: Are you sure?
Tim: Yes, there was two loud noises.
George: It was probably just some sort of animal, or even maybe the factory nearby.
Tim: But it was diff…
Script Final - Continued
George: Tim! ‘pause’ I know you, your always paranoid about things, its probably nothing to
worry about. Look, your gonna be a bit tired and exhausted from todays work, so why don’t
you just go to sleep, it will do you good.
Narrator: Once again, it was obvious he wasn’t changing his mind, so I walked off. I have
previously made up images and sounds of things before, because I'm generally always worried
about things, so I understand why he doesn’t believe me. But this time something was
different, I'm sure it wasn’t made up. There was something about that place that made it
seem so real.
‘long pause’
Another week later and the time has passed once again, it had turned the time that Tim was
to return back home after working another extra day on Friday, yet this time he had prepared
himself emotionally for the unknown.
After a prolonged walk scaling to about 15 minutes of which seemed like a century, the house
of curiosity once again appears from the unknown before my eyes. As I grab my phone from
my pocket, an immediate sense of fear runs through me; using the phone to take a picture,
this was good proof to my dad that their was actually something, and that this time I wasn’t
being my weird self. Taking a picture all seemed good, and so I followed by quickly walking
away from the scene as soon as possible as fear and anxiety grew bigger and bigger.
Script Final - Continued
It promptly turned dark after that brief moment standing still, and a sudden breeze of cold air
rushed across my body, making me even more anxious than previously. Subsequently I hastily
raced off, talking to myself as I go.
Tim: ‘panting’ Okay, okay, lets be quick. Come on, come one, please.
Narrator: Almost immediately after a scream, so very powerful and intense and deafening
makes my heart skip a beat. Blood turning cold, nerves tensing and all hairs stand on end as I
look instantly into the direction of sound. All seems blind as the sun has now set and all that is
visible is tall silhouettes of trees overlooking me, and the sound of pure silence with the wind
following in the background to my heavy breathing. A second scream then occurs, now
behind me.
Sound effect: ‘Scream’
Narrator: Now shivering and tense throughout as the wind picks up, I legged it. I legged it as
fast as I possible could towards the direction of my house and any light that was visible before
me, looking for help, for somebody. Coming up to a long stretch of pathway, I could see the
end, the end which was safe heaven to me, away from anything that was behind me. At that
thought I then slightly turned around, checking, to something unforgettable in my lifetime. A
big tall black figure stode there, as black as black can be, so deep nothing could avoid it,
nothing could ever look past it.
Script Final - Continued
Powerful and strong it stode there, completely still in the cold wind which shoke me entirely. I
was completely frozen in fear and anxiety as that concise moment hung in the air, not falling
as I trembled, studying this thing before my sight. Without of doubt, it had taken sometime,
but I ran. I ran, vanishing into the bewelderness, frequently turning around to check. It was an
enduring time, running from that place to home, but I did so, eventually reaching the safety of
my dad who looked in shock and horror as I entered the room, almost like I was a crazy man.
Tim: THERES A FIGURE!?!?! THERES SOMETHING, OUT THERE, BEHIND ME!!! DAD PLEASE
George: WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT?? Your really starting to worry me! Are you..
Tim: LISTEN TO ME, THERES SOMETHING OUT THERE, SINISTER DARK FIGURE
George: Are you okay? What are you going on about? What figure?
Narrator: At this point I just couldn’t speak, the pure amount of shock in the previous events
scared the living daylights out of me. Almost like it had taken a part of my soul away,
something I could never get back. Ever.
George: Is it that forest? Or that house you mentioned last week?
Narrator: This seemed to bring me back from what seemed like hell. So I got my phone out
and showed the picture. At first I was still in complete shock, and my dad in confusion and
worry for myself, but this soon changed. Upon looking further into the picture we realised
something, it was the figure peering down from one of the windows.
Script Final - Continued
Almost looking straight through me. My stomach churned up in fear, my dad proceeded to
look at me in shock and all that followed was silence.
‘long pause’
Still to this day I don’t know what I saw. We instantly called the police on the location, but it
was never found, not even the building. We had the picture as proof, but nobody believed
either me or my dad. That thing I saw that night had changed mine and my dads lives for ever,
and the worst thing is that its still out their somewhere, but we don’t know where.

What sound effect will it be used for/info?
Sound Recorder Owned
(College)
This is a very essential component when doing this project and or anything similar in and or
around audio production. This will record the sound needed to produce an end product to this
assignment, alongside giving an source to making something for my audience to hear.
Adobe Premier Pro CC Owned
(College)
This is yet another very important aspect in this whole project, as without having this I would be
unable to attach any sound produced in previous steps (Adobe Audition) to a picture. For
example, when reviewing a podcast etc on YT, there is a picture and or more to represent it.
Adobe Audition Owned
(College)
This here software is also very necessary in producing a good final product to this audio project.
Specifically, this software is where and how you put together your different sounds gathered;
alongside this, it also allows a very accurate editing aspect to your audio, through slight shifts.
YouTube Free The software here, YouTube, is very helpful when creating something that is appreciable to
others, as there are countless options available; however, in the case of not being able to use the
software, it would still be achievable to manufacture a decent output to the task.
Garage Band Owned
(College)
Once again, this software is helpful, but it is manageable without it. Garage band is
predominantly only to be used when music is required in a sequence/scene; mainly as it evokes
a range of feelings and a realistic factor towards my peers, all of which are very intentional.
Adobe Photoshop Owned
(College)
This not a necessary and required feature to the whole project, but it does incorporate more
skills and reflect a much more thoughtful production. Using Photoshop, it will allow myself to
add a thumbnail to the video, once uploaded to YouTube, meaning its more easily identifiable.
Car Owned
(Parents)
During the story, a car is referred, here a car sound will be implemented; partially to make it
much more believable in the situation, but also as a way to reflect the story more efficiently
throughout my audience. An aspect that is essential when making a ghost experience novel.
Jacket (Rain) Owned
(Personal)
Another sequence in the narrative is when Tim grabs his phone out of his pocket to show Dad
(George) a picture. This scene holds great importance, and as a result of this needs to be as
realistic as possible, making it much more believable to create tension in the audience listening.

Newspaper/Paper Owned/£1
(Local Shop)
During the narrative, there is a moment here where Tim interrupts his father by barging through
a doorway, at this point, as an added feature, I have intended on him putting down a newspaper
to reflect the scene even more’ by doing so, it my evoke more emotions in my audience.
People N/A This is a much more obvious essential to the whole process of making something, this is
predominantly because without others it would be impossible to produce anything; otherwise it
would show a lack of skills in the work, resulting in lower marks overall and absence in thought.
Bushes N/A
(Nature Is Free)
This may seem very vague, but the prominent section of the narrative, where he experience
these paranormal actions, occurs within a forested area of isolated wildlife; in recognition of this,
it seems appropriate to add some natural effects to make it more realistic and effective.
Door Owned
(college/home)
During the narrative, there is a moment where Tim interrupts his father, this occurs twice
actually, where he barges through a doorway; during this scene, to evoke the situation more, it
only seems necessary to incorporate the sound of a door, to help reflect the scenario further.
Production
Daily Reflection Day 1
What Have I Done – Today, remarking the 27th of January, I had predominantly recorded a large range
of sounds, narrative that is required for my project; these consist of some sound effects, that will be implemented throughout the
course of the audio drama, alongside the main narrative of the story, which is recorded by myself doing the voice over of the
narrative and Tim (the teenager), whilst also having Dan Firth do the voice over of George (the father). Furthermore, another
aspect completed in todays work consists of finishing of the final script. This is essential, as without such component I would be
unable to produce anything that is effective, whilst also making it more effective towards my audience, as more reflective
language and techniques are evident; it is also important to mention that this was completed before the recording phase, as
obviously without this peripheral it would be impossible to produce anything, unless using the draft example as an alternative,
which would portray a poorly produce script.
Methods/Tools Used - Initially, in chronological order and beginning with when writing up the final
script, I had used the online thesaurus as a method to evoke a range of sophisticated language throughout my work; in using
more vocabulary, it can help reflect some of the different ideals and thoughts that I want to display in my work and in my
audience, all of which would evidently portray a much more professional and well thought out information regarding my project
as a whole. Furthermore, another method was using my previously made script draft. I had composed this very well to be
complementary of my final script, meaning that it was very detailed and very accurate to the final piece; and in doing so, I had
used it adjacent to when writing up my final calligraphy, making the whole process much more efficient and less time consuming
to do both as they hold very similar style of narratives. In addition, we had swiftly moved onwards to the production phase upon
concluding the final script piece, and then used predominantly the cut tool, with a few shortcut keys, to begin the process of
refining the recordings. This tool allowed myself to effectively and efficiently shorten down the recording to an appropriate
length, as a restriction to the project is that it must be 3 – 8 minuets in duration – whereas mine was around 12 mins 30 secs;
alongside that, it is very easy to manage and use adequately, evidently meaning that the amount of time allocated was
significantly reduced in the process, of which was very necessary as the current time in being behind was about 2 days in
schedule. It is also important to acknowledge that all I did with this process was shorten it down to a more reasonable length of
10 minuets, whilst also considering and keeping a sufficient amount of detail so the narrative is easily understood, otherwise it
can be complicated and less engaging, defeating the point of this audio drama of which consists of being tense, engaging, fearful
Daily Reflection (Day 1) - Continued
Thoughts/Feelings – Today I feel was very productive to how much work I had produce, alongside
to the extent I how happy and pleased I am with the amount of dedication and detail that is implemented throughout.
Initially, in regards to the final script piece, I had completed this under the space of 1 and a half lessons, this personally is
quite an achievement in comparison to the amount of detail and total amount of written work I had undergone;
furthermore, when considering how much I had produced, this has significantly reduced the time gap I was behind with
my work, catching up completely as the previous amount was accomplished in my own spare time, giving room for other
activities and possibly more important aspects (production of the product). Subsequently, I had also started some
production for the main product of the whole project, this consisted of trimming the original footage to a more
reasonable length, and was undergone in about a further 1 and a half lessons – completing the first day of my weeks
process on the final product; even though it may seem small, this had significantly altered the whole process over the
next couple of days, increasing my productivity speed, as cutting down the footage could be eliminated from further
events, and evidently means that I could focus more on the general effect in my audience through the use of different
sound effects and music styles to evoke these different emotions – mainly coming under fear, anxiety and tension.
Daily Reflection (Days 2 – 3)
What Have I Done - Over the course of the next 2 days, of which finished off the weeks work, I had
predominantly just focused on progressing my main audio drama, of which is focusing on a ghost story as stated in the initial
briefing to the audio project; specifically, when considering making my product, I had refined the cutting to my recordings,
and implemented some sound effects alongside to follow the narrative a dialogue parts. Initially, and a crucial aspect to
acknowledge within my work was cutting down the narration, it is important to realize that my work had previous consisted
of about 12 minuets length - this needed to be 3 - 8 mins or a suitable length for my peers - and so it was essential to shorten
down; after a prolonged amount of tweaking with the videos length I had reduced it to about 10 minutes, this was good
regarding that the story was still understandable, however with some more consideration to introduction music i had once
again shortened the duration by another 30 seconds to the peak of its ability with the chosen novel. Additionally to finishing
off the reduction in length, specifically when during sections of dialogue between characters, I had implemented a range of
sound effects; these predominantly consisted around interactive objects and footsteps, all of which helped reflect the
scenario and an understanding throughout my audience , evidently making it much more engaging, and visually imaginative
which strives an intriguing factor to keep on listening, from which enjoyment is established effectively without affecting the
audio drama’s length and viewers personal time.
Methods/Tools Used - Upon first trimming down the footage of voice recordings for the narrative and
separate dialogues, I had used the razer tool, alongside the method of slightly tapping the arrow keys, to precisely allot
the different speeches when they are required in my product. Originally, and most obviously, the razor tool when used
can split the selected footage into separate pieces, meaning that you could either shorten down lengths of footage,
remove errors in your footage, or completely delete it from existence; this can also be used through the shortcut key ‘c’,
reducing the total amount of time spent on this aspect, and replacing it with extra time for what requires more
attention. Following on from this tool, this method, consisting of using both the left and right arrow keys, allows myself
to accurately select and/or cut the different footage to precise readings; the arrow keys act as a transition between each
frame, either left or right, and we're used effectively to manage the different voices in my audio project, whilst also being
very efficient in reducing the length of my whole media source I am producing.
Daily Reflection (Days 2 – 3) - Continued
Thoughts/Feelings - Over the course of the past 2 days, though I had predominantly just worked on
the duration and extra details to realism, I strongly evoke the feeling that I have produced a lot, and to a substantial
amount of detail, in the given amount of time to spare with working on my audio drama.
Initially, in regards to the process of trimming down the footage, this had been accomplished over a prolonged
amount of time, consisting of about 6 hours of lessons, from which had exceeded my expectations in recognition
that still a lot of sufficient work was required in the production phase; however, it is important to acknowledge that
this was an essential factor within the whole project, primarily because it reduces the overall duration to a much
more suitable length within the brief's restrictions, but also because this means less wasted time from my audiences
perspective is present by listening to this, evidently resulting in more engagement and enjoyment through my audio
work as less worries about possible future plans, and or arrangements, with consideration to their time, is illustrated.
Additionally, now in consideration towards the process of implementing sound effects, had I also completed this, yet
to a much more reasonable amount of time, consisting of about 3 hours of lessons, from which all the sounds effects
had been gathered and placed within their suitable locations during predominantly when dialogue is featured; the
use of effects had primarily been resolved around both adding a sense of realism to my work, whilst also portraying a
larger variety of skills towards my peers. Originally, when endorsing on implementing sound effects, they add more
of an authority of realism within the piece, this can seemingly make the story much more believable and realistic,
especially when considering a controversial theme of the paranormal; furthermore, this makes it much more
engaging and understanding of the situation towards my audience, whilst also evoking these different emotions
frequently throughout – these predominantly consisting of fear, anxiety and tension – something that is incredibly
crucial and significant when the horror/thriller genre is portrayed. Additionally, and most finally, another aspect to
consider is the amount of skills I am displaying through the inclusion of these extra features; they help reflect the
amount of detail and effort that I have accustomed to this project, whilst also developing a range of new skills, from
which will most likely help refine my future careers.
Daily Reflection (Days 4 – 6)
What Have I Done - Over the course of the final few days, I had mainly focused on finishing
off the whole production for my audio project, of which is focusing on a ghost story as stated in the initial briefing to the
assignment; specifically speaking, when acknowledging the different components that still need referring to, i had
finished off my product by including a variety of different music choices. Upon the completion of last week's work, all
that was required, to accomplish this phase in the production line, was by implementing a range of music choices;
these predominantly had focused around the music producer Kevin Macleod, with some from Vivek Abhishek as well,
all of which are royalty free and easily accessible from the personals. Initially it is crucial to recognise that the music
choice evokes the different emotions required for my ghost story, these primarily consisting of fear, anxiety and tension,
all of which make the audio drama much more engaging and understanding throughout my audience, a key factor to
establish in any source of media; alongside this, as I had previously mentioned, they are all very accessible and easy to
manage, evidently causing myself to reduce the total amount of allotted time given and make my time more efficient,
something that to current time isn't necessary, but is very helpful in offering further time for other important aspect in the
project (evaluation).
Methods/Tools Used - Upon implementing the choices of music within my work, I had
used the razer tool to separate the audio in regions, as well as audio transitions to shift between each individual track.
Originally, and most obviously, the razor tool when used can split the selected audio into separate pieces, meaning that
you could either shorten down lengths of music, remove specific sections, or completely delete it from existence; this
can also be used through the shortcut key ‘c’, reducing the total amount of time spent on this aspect, and replacing it
with extra time for what requires more attention in the assignment. Following this, some transitional fades, and audio
gains had been used to help portray the shifts between the different music choices and or tension increases; by
implementing these effects, it allows a smooth development in the narrative, whilst also evoking professionalism and
more of an emotional connection throughout, something that is very essential across the media industry and most
specifically my product being produced.
Daily Reflection (Days 4 – 6) - Continued
Thoughts/Feelings - Over the course of the past week, i had predominantly focused on aspects
that would conclude the production phase for the assignment, this predominantly being the musical features, and I feel
that I have effectively done this with the extent of how happy and pleased I am with the amount of dedication and work
produced for my audio drama throughout the times passing. Upon completion of last week's processes - primarily
consisting of finishing the script, recording the required aspects, cutting footage, and sound effects - i had moved
onwards to implementing a range of musical elements, from which would reflect the scenarios more. In regards to this
aspect, I had completed this over the course of 3 days; this may seem a lot for working on just the musical aspects, but
this is very essential in provoking the different emotions I want to demonstrate and arouse throughout my audience -
these predominantly consisting of fear, anxiety and tension. Additionally, whilst also constructing my musical elements,
small justifications to transitions and distortion regions were applied similarly. Furthermore, the choice of music selected
effectively reflects the creepy, horror/thriller scheme I am portraying, all of which helps support more of an
understanding and engagement throughout my audience, this being something that can develop a sense of enjoyment
and interest.
Evaluation
Research
Strengths – Upon having completed the main production of my audio project (ghost story),
alongside it already having been uploaded to YouTube for review, research was a key factor to consider when
this task was introduced to myself and others in my class. Initially, when moving onwards with this phase of
the projects processes, it’s evident that my knowledge level in this industry would be significantly lower than
required to produce something adequate for the activity in hand; this is recognized upon realizing that I had
no previous insight to audio production, meaning a large range of skills had also developed in the process of
researching different sources, all of which may significantly benefit future careers and tasks acquired.
Furthermore, in recognizing these variety of sources, from which I had evaluated, it has opened up a larger
interest of mine; evidently meaning that I enjoy more variation in the media industry, of which will be useful
for future careers and when working with other products to improve the overall quality, not just for audio
projects but also in film/TV and other platforms.
Weaknesses – Vice versa regarding weaknesses, as it is also similarly important and a crucial
aspect to consider in my project, as this predominantly only is necessary across my bibliography. Initially it is
important to recognize that I personally believe my research aspects – including insights to Doctor Who, The
Archers, and Mr Nightmare – are up to a high level of accuracy and necessary information within them,
evidently meaning that I reflect everything required in my work. Otherwise, the only issues in this phase,
which primarily stand out from others, is that my bibliography could be improved; by doing so it would offer
more information as well as skills and aspects that I could include within my own work when I eventually
reach the making stage of my ghost story.
Planning
Strengths – Following on from the research phase comes planning my main production to the activity in
hand (ghost story). Initially, once I had finalized my general story line and ideas for the paranormal event i am portraying
in this project - in the previous ideas phase - I had begun by drafting a simplistic script of which reflected my narrative
and ideals I want to get across my audience; in doing so, this had effectively helped with the next stage of creating a final
script, as I could follow a similar process and use some aspects from it in my official script for the project, all of which
made this phase much more time efficient and detailed, as for more sophisticated and engaging techniques could be
implemented in the extra time acquired from producing a draft before. Furthermore, in the displayed music page of my
planning phase, I had included a feature portraying my different music choices and sound effects necessary for my audio
drama; as this page is present with links to the music, this significantly helped in the production phase further, as time
management is reduced in easily accessing the different sounds needed, as well as being able to easily identify what
sound effects are necessary/ and or required to be in a scene to make it much more engaging/effective to my audience.
Something incredibly essential to mention that was performed in this step was the gathering of sounds. Using zapsplat
and YouTube, a range of very compelling sound effects and or music was gathered; this was significant when realizing
that the choice of music during the tracks play through evokes these different emotions in my audience, an aspect that is
crucial to conjure when the audio drama is strongly represented by a genre. This can be well demonstrated when
something emotionally controls you over yourself and your own actions, meaning that it has effectively gathered your
interest and can make you either cry (sadness), laugh (comedy), tense (horror) and or controversial (anger).
Weaknesses – Next, regarding weaknesses in this development to the project, there isn't many to refer -
as far as I am aware in my PowerPoint/information. The only thing to consider is when writing up my final script, it had
taken a prolonged amount of time, more than expected; I strongly believe that this couldn't have been avoided,
otherwise a significantly lower quality to my work would be demonstrated, but it is important to recognize that this
reduced the total amount of time accustomed to me, evidently affecting my production further down the line. Similarly
the draft had also taken a long time to do, preventing myself from working on upcoming, controversially more important
aspects of my process production – such as the final script and or sounds of which evoke the feelings in my audience.
Time Management
Furthermore, now considering aspects of time management, I strongly believe that I have not stuck to the expectations
of keeping on track with time, however I have completed everything in the running order of the production. Initially
beginning with my experiments, I had completed these on time, in having started and finished this through less than a
weeks progress upon introduction to the audio project; however, moving onwards to the researching phase, of which
was to also be completed during the same week, when considering making my own audio drama - specifically under a
ghost story - I had slightly lacked in finishing this over the same allotted time over the course of pre planned assessment.
Furthermore, now in the second week of the project, I had begun using the first couple of lessons to complete my
research, reducing the necessary time for other aspects but finishing this feature at a great amount of detail. As the
research had been completed, it was now required to get all of the planning for my product done. Starting this phase, I
had pushed myself further to try make up some time for the previous processes (research), this had slightly worked as
for by the end of the week all the pages - including sound effects, actors, music, resource list, and partially the draft
script - had been completed to a good standard; this evidently left me finishing the draft and moderately completing the
final script over the course of the weekend, in my free time. Additionally this moved to production, where I had used the
week to finish the script and whole project; evidently meaning that my time management had caught up to where I
should have been in the previous events, accomplishing each phase per week.
In conclusion, it is important to mention that I obviously wasn't on track with my time management throughout the
whole process of start to finish, but I did eventually reach the end of making my product, and on time, significantly
different to my expectations as of 2 weeks ago where I was about 2 days behind time.
If I had more time to work on my whole project, I would work more on the visual aspect of my product when on YouTube,
as it is only a simplistic edited image denoting a old wooden cabin within the mise-en-scene of a dark
forested/overgrown backdrop; specifically, I would implement an animated glitch effect whenever a distortion occurs
throughout the narrative, as well as this I could also add a dark figure - or something very similar - when one of my
characters refer to the ghostly encounter, all of which would make it much more engaging and effective in reflecting
tension and fear emotions predominantly in my audience. If not mentioned already, I wouldn’t change most and or any
of my written work, mainly because I am very happy with the outcomes to each page in this PowerPoint, but also
because it would make the process longer lasting, of which could cause a delay in compleashion of work and uploading it
Technical Qualities
Initially, when considering technical qualities within my work, i would strongly evoke the feeling that there is a wide
range of technical variation and skills implemented throughout the course of my audio project; in recognition of
including a lot of different sound effects, from within the dialogue and distortion components, and music alterations,
from predominantly the music producer Kevin Macleod, i would consider this reflective of being complicated. By
including all of these different aspects, frequently throughout the course of the whole narrative, this significantly adds a
complication in not make the main source too overpowering by music, speaking and or sound effects; evidently this
means a prolonged amount of time had been spent covering all the different features, and minimizing them through
cuts to fade between different tones, all of which had evidently aroused emotions of mainly fear, anxiety and tension,
reflecting my thoughts on strongly displaying a detailed account of technical variation.
Furthermore, it is also important to justify my reasonings behind different effects and techniques used within my work,
these consisting around expositional gains and fades (transitions), alongside the inclusion of sound alterations in the
pitch and distortions of speech. Originally, in acknowledgement of the different transition sound effects, the expositional
gains had been used when tension is a specific sound effect was required, whilst also simplistic fades represented
changes in the narrative/tone towards the scenario being displayed in the audio drama. Illustrating the productive use
of a quick sound gain, this created an instantaneous sense of tension within my audience, all of which made it much
more engaging and understanding to the situation at current hand, as it had predominantly been used when the tension
gain sound effect had been implemented to denote the transition between time and uncertain mystery; whereas with
the simple fade, this was frequently used for a shift in music choice when it was needed quickly and efficiently in
keeping the narrative freely flowing, smoothly and professionally. Additionally, I had also used a sound pitch changer,
during the process of distortions, along with a distortion alteration to the narration, of which will also be used during the
process of distortions that frequently occur across the whole audio drama. Upon the occurrence of a short distortion
phase, simulating a slight paranormal activity in tampering with the recording, I had cut this section into multiple
regions, then applying a pitch changer to every other component and altering it to a deep vocal; this had been created
in hopefully reflected a ghoulish resemblance, creating tension within my audience, alongside a slight factor of anxiety
to suit the ghost stories requirements and provoke my audiences emotions. Moreover, I had then enforced the
distortion effect, to help with the ‘hopefully’ clear comparison between human and ghost encounters, similarly to the use
of the pitch shifter.
Aural Qualities
Strengths - Sound is the most important aspect around this whole project, focusing in and
around aural qualities and alterations that can be made to produce something amazing; and specifically
speaking about my work, there are a lot of positives about predominantly the use of sound effects, music
choices and skills developed in the process of making. Upon realizing that i have never produced anything
with recognition to details in sound, this was completely new to myself, and so in recognition everything
produced was a new skill i had accomplished; and so it's evident that learning all of these skills will help with
any future careers for myself, especially in wanting to work around the media industry where every
intellectual advancement is necessary in producing something exceptional for the community watching/and
or listening. Furthermore, another feature to consider - which i had effectively achieved throughout the
course of my whole audio project - is my music choices; these predominantly had focused around the music
producer Kevin Macleod, with some from Vivek Abhishek as well, all of which are royalty free and easily
accessible from the personals. Initially it is crucial to recognize that the music choice evokes the different
emotions required for my ghost story, these primarily consisting of fear, anxiety and tension, all of which
make the audio drama much more engaging and understanding throughout my audience, a key factor to
establish in any source of media; alongside this, as i had previously mentioned, they are all very accessible
and easy to manage, evidently causing myself to reduce the total amount of allotted time given and make my
time more efficient, something of which was very necessary in being behind schedule by roughly about 2 days
(yet was achieved to be back on target by this). And most finally, in regards to use of sound effects, these
made the structural parts (where dialogue was present) much more believable and realistic to my peers;
through the use of primarily footsteps and interactive objects, it also makes it more understanding and
visually imaginative to my audience, as for they can begin to portray the scenarios more efficiently in their
imagination, something that is very necessary and effective within an fully audio based drama.
Aural Qualities - Continued
Weaknesses - In comparison, when regarding flaws in the production line,
these predominantly up hear around a small range of options and a lower state of quality in
the sound effects implemented, these were specifically identified when requiring footsteps
running through either a grassy texture and/or a muddy pathway, alongside other features of
slamming a door and when needing heavy breathing. The main problem had initially begun by
discovering the right sound for the narrative that would fit in well with the scenario i am
reflecting, because out of the ‘millions’ of sounds available, I couldn't identifying anything
that was significantly suiting; this had evidently caused my self to determine the most
corresponding effect, of which worked, but not to the extent of my desires with the project
and what i want to produce for my peers, leaving an understanding but not entirely
engrossing audience. Following, once the sound had been gathered, it was most clear that
the quality isn't as good as anticipated, causing it to in worst case scenario distorted because
of the pitch; this can make it seems even less realistic, and convey a bad representation of
myself in the production of it, making a poor judgement and understanding to the audio
drama throughout my audience.
Audience Appeal
Initially it is important to refine my target audience, of which consists of psychographic interest of the paranormal,
podcasts/audio based drama, and/or maybe the horror genre, and then most finally demographics of predominantly both
genders between the ages of 16 - 35 - yet this may differ with some anomalies for the older generation - and the lower to
working class of money incomes. Originally, with psychographics, it seems most relevant that there is an interest towards
either the paranormal specifically, or slightly off with mysterious events, alongside with audio dramas and/or podcasts; this is
primarily because its an audio drama I'm producing which suits their needs effectively, but also because it's about a ghostly
encounter, whilst also holding the mystery genre with a cliffhanger at the end of the narrative, evidently meaning that it will
be more understanding and engaging for the audience listening. Furthermore, it might also satisfy people within the interest
of the thriller/horror genres; its most obvious through the inclusion of a ghostly figure, holding similar characteristics and
stereotypes that you would see across other media platforms in this genre, but also because throughout the majority of the
novel, whether it's the music, sound effects, and or narration, a fearful and tense perception is present, similar to other
thriller sources, of which evoke these key emotions of fear, anxiety and tension to make it much more engaging and
understanding of the current situation of the storyline.
Following on from this, now taking shape of the demographics, it is important to consider that this audio project does not
specifically target towards a gender of choice; this is primarily because the paranormal activity theme holds a very extensive
variety of options to take shape under, yet in some cases this is only positive feedback, for it allows a wider audience to get
involved, all of which may resolve in upcoming new hobbies and interests for the audience. This also holds similarities across
the age barriers i have targeted it towards, this being 16 - 35, because it could easily stretch to the older generation, captivate
all ages; however, i do strongly recommend that the minimalist age starts from 16, this is predominantly because younger
audiences may get frightened easily over slightly worrying and mysterious events/encounters, all of which may affect their
personal health by living paranoid about controversial topics which may or may not be true to life. And most finally, it is also
addressed to the lower and or working class of people in the ranks of money income; I must admit that this can differ with
anomalies, but it is primarily this class that people views would be more distinctive around, partially because it is a good
example of escapism from their generally poorer backgrounds, but also because typically young adults will not earn a serious
amounts of money, evidently meaning that media sources are an effective way to provoke enjoyment from which not a lot of
money is spent but a long time of entertainment can be identified.

  • 3. Foley Positives: When considering the end product produced around the Foley work, present in the hyperlink below, and in regards to positives in this task, it evidently will benefit the production of my main project subject task. Initially, it is obvious that a wide variety of techniques/and or skills, have been established in my work displayed across the YouTube platform, all of which help portray the elected scene from ‘Shaun Of The Dead’; these predominantly consist from creating the sounds necessary, using obscure objects in the surrounding area, syncing these previously generated modulations in time with the videos actions, and using the allocated software to form the end product of the Foley Task. In having learned a lot of new process in this specific assignment, it will effectively help myself preserve the main project when due to making it in the recent coming times; this also means that a more efficient use of time for the process in demonstrated, as no delays in learning new aspects/functions is required in having already studied these features across the accustomed software. Negatives: In regards towards the main Foley task, once again, there however are unnecessary/negatives towards the production of this assignment; this primarily comes under an extensive use of time, of which could be used more effectively with the main project rather than just experiments. As it is predominantly just to gain a further interest/knowledge into the audio production around TV, film and of general video editing, this time ‘wasted’ could be used more effectively in the production of the main product of the task in hand.
  • 4. Foley - Continued https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5oEpzOkjPU Improvements: Furthermore, and finally in concluding this section, there is an extensive assortment of improvements that I would adjust to suit the videos needs more; these mainly fall into the categories of reducing/eliminating the wind background noise, and implementing more sound effects to reflect more actions/objects that are present throughout the course of the video. Initially, coming under reducing/eliminating background noise, this predominately being the wind, is necessary to reflect the scene more, as surrounding buildings will reduce this as implemented. However, it is important to mention that I wouldn’t completely remove this effect, as for in sequences where he walks in the middle of two roadways, it is very effective and realistic towards my audience; this I mainly because the enclosing area of buildings prevent the wind from reaching the main character (Simon Peg ‘Shaun’), whereas in the middle of the street it is much more susceptible to these issues. Additionally, another justification to the product would be by adding further object/people sound effects from nearby things; principally these would consist of natures course of movement (wind, bushes, trees etc), more zombies, and possibly screams. In adding these supplementary effects, it would generally make the product much more engaging, and realistic, through believable situations actions and sounds, all of which are intended feature to regularly include in any film, TV and or video across the platforms.
  • 5. Recording Experience: When introduced to the task in hand, a sense of confidence was present, yet further information regarding creating each sound through everyday objects creates a further challenge to confront. Initially, after the first introduction to the assignment, a contemporary urge to list all required sounds was essential to making a well produced Foley, all of which would overlay the muted track from ‘Shaun Of The Dead’; all of these, of which were necessary in reflecting the video, had been listed after this slide, including what objects may work alongside the tracks actions. Furthermore, it was now the occasion to commence recording these sounds that are required for the task. During this stage, some initial ideas, regarding what objects to use in recording the different sounds, predominantly the opening and closing of the gate, were of difficulty in resembling the specific wooden gate; in challenging this thought, we simply walked around the college finding a range of different props/and or things to resemble the action. In completing the sound of the gate, we had found a welding mask, in the studio we used, that was extremely squeaky, in realizing this it seemed most appropriate for the role of the gate; it is also important to mention that other objects that we struggled to find noises suitable were similarly confronted.
  • 6. Recording - Continued Sounds Identified around gathered clip: . Slap sound against wood – Hit a fence . Wind sound for outside – Wind outside . Wooden gate opening – A squeaky door . Slight sigh from character – We sigh . Wooden gate closing – A squeaky door . Footsteps throughout – Walk outside synced . Footstep drop from curb – Jump outside . Zombies in background – We make sound . Scratch on back of head – Scratch head . Movement of bushes – Move bushes outside . Trolley slightly moving – Move Tesco trolley . Clothing being handled – Move clothing . Tripping over pavement – Trip outside . Yawning from character – We yawn . Guy running past character – We run past . Footsteps from inside – We walk inside . Slight music in background - YouTube . Grabs fridge door – College shop fridge . Opening of the fridge door – Shop fridge . Movement of cans – Shop fridge . Grabs a can from the fridge – Shop fridge . Moving of can in hands – Shop fridge . Puts can back in fridge – Shop fridge . Closing of the fridge door – Shop fridge . Slips on the ground – Walk inside . Grabs a cornetto – Slight ruffle of paper . Generators from the fridges – Kitchen
  • 8. Existing Products Research – Source 1 The Archers -Dialogue: Upon reviewing an episode of ‘The Archers’, specifically one from the 26th June 1983, it holds a extensive use of dialogue throughout. Initially it is obvious that the use of speech between two or more characters is used to evoke different attitudes within the characters, as this can portray the different ways in which a situation is approached in the narrative. Alongside, it is also used to emphasize different characters and the scenic area they are situated in, such as a farmer is regularly stereotyped around the countryside, differing effectively against a business man who is otherwise associated in the urban background of a city. -Sound effects: Furthermore, in regards to ‘The Archers’ podcast narrative, sound effects are also used throughout , and at a frequent rate. Originally it is evident that without sound effects implemented, the whole narrative would be regularly misunderstood and very monotone in just having the characters talk to one another; additionally, this helps define the importance of sound effects, predominantly because without them it would be boring, but also as it helps emphasize certain situations that characters are in. Examples of these which customarily appear in narrative mainly consist of: farm animals (sheep, cows, chickens etc), background conversations (usually in a public area), footsteps (evoking a character moving), munching (when a characters eating, and many more.

Positioned at the beginning of each episode, the music, serves a role is portraying the beginning of another narrative strand, of which is present beyond each new chapter in the show. It is also important to recognize the tune that the music is denoted at, primarily a much more joyful, and happy connotations are set as the use of the instruments, these consisting of multiple violins and a flute; alongside this, the tune is fairly repeated at a quick rate, this can suggest that the narrative moves along rapidly, whereas other ideals evoke that it represents the countryside lifestyle ( ‘The Archers’ show theme) effectively instead.

Existing Products Research – Source 2 Doctor Who (The Master) -Dialogue: Upon reviewing an episode of ‘Doctor Who – The Audio Drama’, specifically the one called ‘The Master Confronts Eight’ in 25th April 2018, it holds a thorough utilization of speech between characters to further emphasize the seriousness of the current situation and scene that is being portrayed here. Initially it is obvious that it is used to evoke the narrative that is situated in this scene specifically, as it holds an importance in understanding throughout the audience watching; alongside this, a lot of emphasize and use of a monotonous tone on particular words is used, such as with the words ‘suffers’, ‘master’ and ‘need’, all of which help define the viewpoints from each character portrayed in this drama present. -Sound effects: Furthermore, in regards to the ‘Doctor Who’ audio drama, sound effects are essential in defining the scenario of this segment in the drama, such as with touching the ‘pressure vessel’ and ‘footsteps’ as each individual character moves around. Otherwise, with the removal of these diegetic sounds, of objects/movements being heard in the scene, this scene could slightly be misunderstood; specifically, in having some of these sounds abolished from the sequence, it would’t significantly differ the scenario’s understanding in the audience, as minimal sounds are present, yet it does further help define the situation whilst also supporting in evoking the narrative more, all of which are intended aspects to frequently use in their audio dramas.

Such as when the episode begins, a slight use of music is obvious, in the manner of a rising bass in connoting a tense situation, of which it is, is present; this evidently represents the beginning of a serious episode to its audience, as for this is used frequently across all of their episodes, signifying these ambitions that are displayed. Furthermore, a much more concealed value in the use of music here is when certain expressions upon their conversation turn the topic, such as when the doctor questions ‘eights’ responsibility, and the music turns up in a more tense and higher pitch way; the use of music here connotes the importance of the conversation, effectively signifying towards its audience a moment of concentration that is required. This is also reflected further on in the episode, further portraying similar properties and characteristics, engaging the audience more.
  • 12. Existing Products Research – Source 3 Mr. Nightmare -Dialogue: Upon reviewing an episode of ‘Mr. Nightmare’, specifically the one called ’10 Really Creepy True Stories’ in 27th March 2015, no dialogue is present between two or more characters, this is predominantly because it is a single narrator displaying these stories single handedly; otherwise, if the definition was to come under somebody talking, this would suit the requirements flawlessly, as the narrator from the YouTube channel ‘Mr Nightmare’ talks nonstop throughout the course of the 20 minute video. -Sound effects: Furthermore, serving more of a frequently used purpose, is the sound effects implemented into the YouTube video. Originally, it is evident that without these sound effects in place throughout the video, the narrative could be misjudged and much more monotone towards its audience. These sound effects denoted are predominantly associated with eerie sounds described within the video itself, such as when an unusual creepy sound screams, all of which is a reoccurring theme to create a threatening and fearful atmosphere within their audiences watching. • 16. Story 1 Brief Background Information: There is a family, living in a rough area in Luton, who as a total are 3 of them, all of which live a happy content life together; yet with recent issues, are struggling with money and bills to pay for their accommodation. The family consists of: a teenager called Ryan (aged 16) who loves playing football with his local friends, a primary school kid called James (aged 9) who enjoys playing Fortnite and video games along with his brother, and finally the mother of the two called Natalie (aged 43) who enjoy company with her children yet recently got fired from a job in photography. The family love each other greatly, but that was affected when the husband of Natalie, the father of the two boys, disappeared 1 year ago in a supposed hit and run car crash upon the date 20th July at about 6:30pm when returning from work.
  • 17. Story 1 - Continued Narrative: The family lived their regularly, unaffected and content lives going to work and school; yet this day was different. Remarking the day their father died, it was the 20th of July at 6pm, coming up to a year of their father being dead. Natalie and James were both at home, in the comfort of each other; whilst Ryan was currently just closing down the shop he was working in throughout the day. When turning of all the lights for the day, and being the only one of two who were there, he hears the sound of footsteps from across the shop. Looking over, and in interest as there isn't meant to be anyone, nothing is in sight. Yet suddenly a pair of shoes falls to the ground from behind him. Turning quickly, there is nothing to be seen yet a note of one of the shoes stating ‘tick tock goes the clock, 30 minutes left until your gone upon the fog’. In slight shock and worry on the unknown, he quickly closes the shop, scraps the note, and leaves to go home. Now at the house, it is 6:15pm, and Ryan is with his mum. As he is about to mention the note, a knock on the door occurs. Natalie opens the door to nothing on the other side, yet it was incredibly foggy; covering the whole street, apart from a lone clock in the middle of the road. With slight confusion she closes the door a sits back down. 10 mins later, it is now 6:25, another knock occurs. Opening the door, there is now a sympathy card on the door, it reads ‘Tick tock goes the clock, 5 minutes left your you're all gone upon the fog’. This worries the family, and they close the door once again. 5 minutes later, their grandfather clock books for 6:30, remarking the disappearance of their father. A knock occurs on their door. Opening the door cautiously, on the other side is a newspaper. Picking up the newspaper they realize the main title has each of their names on it. ‘The death of mother Natalie, teenager Ryan and young James follows their recent disappearance of being unable to find them amongst all odds’. This is then followed by a misshapen shape in the fog behind. Their father stode in the middle of the road. In shock they run towards him, wanting to greet him in happy arms. However, as they get closer, he gets further away. Still moving forwards, they are now in the middle of the road when suddenly….. The sound of a car horn grows louder and louder and then into a sudden thud.
  • 18. Story 2 Brief Background Information: The main characters of this plot consist of a teenager called Timothy, otherwise known as Tim from the narrator and his local friends, whom is aged 16 and is currently working a lot as its his summer term in a part time job at a shop in his nearby town. The other character called Helen is Tim’s mother, she is aged 43 and also works in the nearby town but only 4 days a week as she has mental struggles to keep up with, as the doctor suggested. They live in a peaceful village nearby to the town, called Akworth, that the family have all grown up in from being young. The family very much so appreciate each other, and as a result of their close bond between them, regularly share their emotions and or experiences with one another when returning from work/school or whatever more.
  • 19. Story 2 - Continued Narrative: On a regular day I would get a lift with my mum to some part time work in the nearby town: earning a bit of money, I decided to up my amount of days working at the shop. An issue with this then appeared, my mum couldn't pick me up to return home from work, and so as a result of this I had to walk back; this wasn't much of an issue as it was only a 30min trek, but it was a bit disturbing passing some of the old abandoned buildings. After a regular day working, it turned to me finishing and coming home, yet this time it I was walking back. Prepared and having a feeling of tiredness I started my hike. After awhile I then suddenly approached some weird abandoned houses, they always gave me the creeps, but nothing too much to stop me from passing by. Yet this time it was different. A sudden noise came from inside a specific building. An old single house, not too expensive, not too new but older fashioned. In slight confusion and fright, as they always gave me the creeps, I picked up the pace looking behind me frequently. Nothing else occurred but I rushed back home as I had instantly become frightened. Arriving home it was obvious my mum was intrigued and slightly concerned for myself, following I told her. In further interest my mum told me to take a picture of the palace, as she couldn't quite understand where and what I was on about. In a weeks time it had come the day once again to walk home, yet this time I was much more cautious. Approaching the house slowly I had taken a quick picture of the house then decided to rush past it in worry of the inevitable to occur. Nothing happened, which shocked me, so I decided to return slightly keeping my distance and watched the building from a distance. Upon looking back a scream bellowed from the direction of the building. Then to my side. And then silence. In instant shock I ran back home, which was quite a while off, doing the same as before, frequently checking behind me incase of anything following me. This time though, there was something. A tall black figure in the middle of the path behind me in the distance. I continued to run back until, arriving. At home my mum was shocked, telling her the story I then resolved to presenting the picture I had taken. Displaying the image from my cell phone, it appeared the figure was in the window, peering down. We called the police, they arrived at the location but nothing was found.
  • 22. Proposal Working Title: Abandoned.. Or not? Audience: The audience, of which is not stated within guidelines, but presumed across the main category and project idea, consists of predominantly ghost infusiates. Initially, coming under the both very obvious factors of my audience, my ghost story seems both suited to the male and female gender equally, alongside towards any age category ranging from what I would say of 14 – mid 60s. Originally, in regards to the gender, it seems most appropriate that’s its targeted equally between the two genders; this is mainly because paranormal experiences, such as the one being described across my audio project, can happen to anyone at any given time randomly across their lifespan. Furthermore, as a result of the previously mentioned allegation, this similarly associates with the age category being from anywhere between the ages of 16 – around 65; this primarily begins from 16 onwards, as any younger audiences may become worried and or upset, otherwise with being suited up to the age of 65 (about) is because stereotypically very old people aren't as much interested in events such as these being narrated. Next, as suited to peoples social statuses, this would seem also satisfactory to a large range of people due to similar reasons as before; however, in making this more profound, I would say its more engaging for audiences under either the working and or lower statuses, this is mainly because I figure when groups of people are poorer than others they can use audio collections, and or video as a way of escapism from reality. And finally, Subsisting under psychographic values, my project seems most befitting towards people whom find ghouls/host/spectres interesting as a hobby and or profession, otherwise people who are easily intrigued within controversial topics, such as the paranormal, would also be very suiting to my projects purpose.
  • 23. Proposal - Continued Project Concept (approx. 200 words) In regards to the product that I will evidently achieve in making for this project, this comes under a narrated ghost story. Initially it is important to recognise that there are a range of different options when making this, either including a simple narration throughout from one person, or having a repetitive use of dialogue to move the flow of story forwards; in this case I would be mixing to the two together, in having include dialogue, as I strongly believe this adds a sense of realism throughout my audience, alongside the obvious narration, that sets the different atmospheres and scenes efficiently. The main aim of this story, through my personal perspective, is to creates tension, slight fear and interest throughout my audience; these are essential aspects to include in a project like this because, in past experiences with work from predominantly ‘Mr Nightmare’, evoking powerful emotions such as interest and fear really displays an audiences engagement with the source, all of which are greatly appreciated and necessary in making a product that will do good across the media industry of sound. Next, and most finally, a set of 3 researched products – Mr Nightmare, The Archers, and Doctor Who Audio Drama – will be annotated in full detail; in doing so, aspects across all of these very popular audio concepts will be used within my own, as these are essential to evidently helping produce an outstanding final product – of which is a key intention.
  • 25. Script Draft Draft: Once there was a young boy called Timothy, Tim for short as his friends and I would call him, and his dad, George, whom both lived together in a small house, not too big, not too confined, just right for the two. They lived in a small village on the outskirts of their local town, Dremthorp; they both worked, Tim’s dad in a school as a substitute teacher, and Tim, at a part time job in a cramped café on the main street, taking advantage of his long summer term so he could start earning a bit of money for himself. Their lives had been very busy, but regular to one another people whom also lived in the village; some would even go to saying their joyful lives were perfect, and their company amongst the village was essential and comforting. However in this story, all their feelings changed in a very sudden and mysterious proceeding. As follows, Tim and his dad, George, were both working busy on a Thursday. After returning home from their both long shifts, finishing roughly the same time , and getting the same transport of his dads Suzuki Swift back, Tim states Tim: ‘Dad.’ George: ‘Sigh’ Yeah whats up Tim: Lately work at the café has been really good for me. Ya know; earning a bit of money for myself. Welllllllll I was just asking whether it was okay for me to do some more days. Basically I would be doing 5 days per week, earning even more. Is that okay? George: Ermmmm, yeah that should be fine. As long as your okay with getting back after finishing, that’s no problem Tim: Wait? Can you not pick me up, its not that far. George: No its my day off Tim: Dad, please its only 10 minu…. George: No! If you want to work more, and earn more money, then you will have to walk back on the pathway by the old farm.
  • 26. Script Draft - Continued Draft: Without at once arguing, both Tim and George leave into separate rooms, resolving the situation between them. It is now the next day and this is where things start to become a little bit weird. It is 5:00pm and so Tim has just finished work; beginning his journey walking back, Tim sighs as he realizes it’s a 20 minuets hike, across the muddy pathways, lush green fields, and then passing the old empty farm house to then finish his ‘gentle Stoll’ as hid dad would say. It has been about 15minuets since the last occurrence with Tim on his walk back, when from the corner of his eye an old dilapidated house appears from behind the forested trees that disguise it from sight of others. It just sits there, in the middle of an empty patch that’s surrounded by wildlife. Overgrown, wrecked and fragile, the building looks like it has be ravaged. It has always given him the creeps when passing it, he sometimes thinks something is watching him from inside, so he usually picks up his usual walking pace to avoid it, but nothing ever happens. However something did this time. When the building is just about to disappear from sight, into the converted forest, Tim hears a gigantic thud of a sound coming from the direction of the house. Sound effect: ‘Thud’ Instantly turning around, Tim looks the direction from where it could be heard. In slight curiosity and shock, he leans forward with a few steps get a better view. In doing so another thud occurs, yet this time it was louder and more like a bang. Sound effect: ‘Bang’ This evidently scared him and so ran back to the comfort of his dad whom had the day off, regularly checking behind him in case of anything that follows. Tim: There was someth… George: Stop! I don’t know what you are on about. Look, you're here now, and you're safe. So just calm down a bit. Okay? Tim: Okay. But there was something, there was two loud bangs. George ‘Okay’ I believe you. Just go to bed, you're probably a bit tired after running back here and also after work.
  • 27. Script Draft - Continued Draft: Tim: There was something back at the house that I passed. You know, that old one by the pathway. George: I don’t know what you're on about. Are you okay? Tim: There was someth… George: Stop! I don’t know what you are on about. Look, you're here now, and you're safe. So just calm down a bit. Okay? Tim: Okay. But there was something, there was two loud bangs. George ‘Okay’ I believe you. Just go to bed, you're probably a bit tired after running back here and also after work. In realisation that Tim’s dad didn’t believing him, it seemed necessary to get evidence as he imagined how embarrassing it would be if news spread around the village, and in the worst case, to his friends in town. A week later, it has turned to the time that Tim was to walk back home again, yet this time he had prepped himself for the unknown. This was now essential as one of his friends had discovered his ‘nonsense story’. Moments later the house of curiosity once again appears from the unknown before his eyes. Instantaneously he grabs his cell phone and takes a quick picture of the location, this was now good proof for the ‘imaginary place I had made up’. Following from this it was my main goal to just get back home as soon as possible. It promptly turned dark after that brief moment, and a sudden breeze of cold air rushed throughout me, making even more anxious than what I was previously. Subsequently I hastily rushed off from scene talking to myself in a way of calming myself. Tim: ‘Panting’ Okay.. Okay. Lets get out of here before anything.
  • 28. Script Draft - Continued Draft: Almost immediately after a scream, powerful, intense and deafening makes my heart skip a beat. Blood turns immediately cold, rushing everywhere in my body, as my nerves tense and hair stands on end. Sound effect: ‘Scream’ Looking instantly into the direction of sound, all seems blind as the sun has now set and all that is visible is tall silhouettes of tress overlooking me, and the sound of silence and the wind follows to my heavy breathing. A second screams then occurs. Sound effect: ‘Scream’ However this time it was behind me. Now shivering and tense throughout as the wind picks up, I legged it towards the direction of my house and any light that is visible in the pitch black surroundings. Coming up to a long stretch of pathway I seemingly turn around to something unforgettable in my lifetime. A big tall black figure stode, as black as black can be, as deep as wolf's mouth in the harsh winter, it stared looking my direction from behind. Adrenaline suddenly dashes around as the silence of me staring towards this thing seems entirely enticing and takes what seems a century to turn my fixating eyes away from whatever stode strong and powerful in front of my sight. Finally after some time of my breath catching in the wind, and the silence deafens my soul making me unable to scream for help, I ran. I ran faster and faster and faster. I ran in hoping I wasn’t far away from what I hoped was safety. Evidently I did reach my front door, barging in my dad immediately looks my direction in slight horror and worry. Tim: THE FIGURE!! THERES SOMETHING, SOMEYTHING I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT WAS! PLEASE HELP George: WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT? ARE YOU OKAY? Why are you still going on about this figure thing? At this point I couldn't speak in the pure amount of shock and fear that had taken over my whole soul of feelings. George: Is it that old house? This seemed to bring me back from what felt like hell. So I got my phone out, and showed the picture. Both of us looked at the picture, initially I was in fear, my dad in confusion. Then we realised something. Our faces turning pale and shocked as we saw the figure in the picture. Peering down from one of the boarded up windows another powerful urge of silence and shocked followed.
  • 29. Script Final Narrator: This is a story quite personal to me, emotionally and quite literally. It takes place in a tranquil and minuscule little village aside from the more built up, urbanized town of Demworth, this place called Ackworth. In the rural countryside, up the north of England, lay these two isolated locations; it wasn’t too quite nor too busy, just right for the residents who lived there. Two of them though, whom lived in the silent nearby village, sparked out of the blue, differing to each other as they were very respected and appreciated to be part of the village community. These are a teenager, called Tim, and his father, called George. They lived together in a small off site detached cottage, small but spacious for them both. All seemed perfect for them, until one day something, or someone you could say, changed their lives forever. Something them and their appreciated locals will never forget. Tim was a growing boy, learning new things each day, and excelling to have a better life with his family; he regularly strived to do better in everything and he was currently working to earn some money for driving lessons and university that was coming up quickly for him. Whereas his dad had already been satisfied with life at the moment, just working 4 days a week and enjoying the company with his son and the limited amount of stress with his job.
  • 30. Script Final - Continued As it falls, Tim had just arrived back home with his dad after working busy all day; it worked out well as they both worked similar hours and in similar places, meaning they could both get home using the same transport, his dads Suzuki swift. However this is where the story really begins. Tim: Dad! George: ‘sigh’ Yeah, what's up? Tim: Lately work has been really good, ya know, earning a bit of cash money for myself. George: and? Tim: And I was wondering if it was okay if I could do more days, whilst I still have the chance before focusing on my GCSE’s after the summer. It would mean working on a Friday, if that is okay? George: I mean… ‘sigh’ yeah, that should be fine. Is the manager okay with you working more? Tim: Yeah he said that it should be fine. George: Okay, well as long as your okay with getting back yourself, everything should be good. Tim: Can you not pick me up? I mean its not that far, its only 10 minu… George: No! Its my day off, you know I need some time to myself. Its only…
  • 31. Script Final - Continued Tim: Please dad, you know I don’t like walking back. George: Its only a 20 minute walk back. ‘pause’ You'll be fine, its only past some fields and a woodland. There’s nothing there anyway. Narrator: Without of doubt it was obvious he wasn’t changing his mind, so I walked off, back to my room, and sat on my bed playing video games for the remainder of the day. Its now a week later, the day is Friday and I have just finished working my extra day. The shop is now closing and so I inevitably start my ‘short’ walk back that’s ‘only 20 minuets’. 5 minutes passes by, I'm still walking. Now its been 10 minutes, and I am still walking, now passing a long stretch beside a field. And now its been 15 minutes, the last stretch is in sight when something catches my eye. ‘long pause’ In the corner of my field of vision, when passing the small woodland, an old dilapidated farmhouse emerges from the converted trees that blind it from others whom walk pass it regularly. Only really realizing something is there, after walking this trek multiple times before, curiosity pulls me over to investigate this abandoned accommodation. Upon further investigating, the house is much more obvious and clear to see how old and ravaged it is. I don’t know what from, or for how long, but it gives me the creeps so I distinctively begin to walk away; when suddenly an apparent thud comes from the direction of the house. Sound effect: ‘thud’
  • 32. Script Final - Continued Tim: Hello? Who's there? ‘long pause’ Narrator: Doubtfully nothing happens, until when I turn my back to the begin walking away again, now a band occurs from a far. Sound effect: ‘bang’ Narrator: I’m a very cautious and paranoid person, so obviously I immediately ran back home as it’s the only real place I feel comfortable to be in. Returning home its noticeable that my dad was worried once I had rushed through the main doorway and slammed the door behind.
  • 33. Script Final - Continued George: Tim! ‘pause’ I know you, your always paranoid about things, its probably nothing to worry about. Look, your gonna be a bit tired and exhausted from todays work, so why don’t you just go to sleep, it will do you good. Narrator: Once again, it was obvious he wasn’t changing his mind, so I walked off. I have previously made up images and sounds of things before, because I'm generally always worried about things, so I understand why he doesn’t believe me. But this time something was different, I'm sure it wasn’t made up. There was something about that place that made it seem so real. ‘long pause’ Another week later and the time has passed once again, it had turned the time that Tim was to return back home after working another extra day on Friday, yet this time he had prepared himself emotionally for the unknown. After a prolonged walk scaling to about 15 minutes of which seemed like a century, the house of curiosity once again appears from the unknown before my eyes. As I grab my phone from my pocket, an immediate sense of fear runs through me; using the phone to take a picture, this was good proof to my dad that their was actually something, and that this time I wasn’t being my weird self. Taking a picture all seemed good, and so I followed by quickly walking away from the scene as soon as possible as fear and anxiety grew bigger and bigger.
  • 34. Script Final - Continued It promptly turned dark after that brief moment standing still, and a sudden breeze of cold air rushed across my body, making me even more anxious than previously. Subsequently I hastily raced off, talking to myself as I go. Tim: ‘panting’ Okay, okay, lets be quick. Come on, come one, please. Narrator: Almost immediately after a scream, so very powerful and intense and deafening makes my heart skip a beat. Blood turning cold, nerves tensing and all hairs stand on end as I look instantly into the direction of sound. All seems blind as the sun has now set and all that is visible is tall silhouettes of trees overlooking me, and the sound of pure silence with the wind following in the background to my heavy breathing. A second scream then occurs, now behind me. Sound effect: ‘Scream’ Narrator: Now shivering and tense throughout as the wind picks up, I legged it. I legged it as fast as I possible could towards the direction of my house and any light that was visible before me, looking for help, for somebody. Coming up to a long stretch of pathway, I could see the end, the end which was safe heaven to me, away from anything that was behind me. At that thought I then slightly turned around, checking, to something unforgettable in my lifetime. A big tall black figure stode there, as black as black can be, so deep nothing could avoid it, nothing could ever look past it.
  • 35. Script Final - Continued Powerful and strong it stode there, completely still in the cold wind which shoke me entirely. I was completely frozen in fear and anxiety as that concise moment hung in the air, not falling as I trembled, studying this thing before my sight. Without of doubt, it had taken sometime, but I ran. I ran, vanishing into the bewelderness, frequently turning around to check. It was an enduring time, running from that place to home, but I did so, eventually reaching the safety of my dad who looked in shock and horror as I entered the room, almost like I was a crazy man. Tim: THERES A FIGURE!?!?! THERES SOMETHING, OUT THERE, BEHIND ME!!! DAD PLEASE George: WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT?? Your really starting to worry me! Are you.. Tim: LISTEN TO ME, THERES SOMETHING OUT THERE, SINISTER DARK FIGURE George: Are you okay? What are you going on about? What figure? Narrator: At this point I just couldn’t speak, the pure amount of shock in the previous events scared the living daylights out of me. Almost like it had taken a part of my soul away, something I could never get back. Ever. George: Is it that forest? Or that house you mentioned last week? Narrator: This seemed to bring me back from what seemed like hell. So I got my phone out and showed the picture. At first I was still in complete shock, and my dad in confusion and worry for myself, but this soon changed. Upon looking further into the picture we realised something, it was the figure peering down from one of the windows.
  • 36. Script Final - Continued Almost looking straight through me. My stomach churned up in fear, my dad proceeded to look at me in shock and all that followed was silence. ‘long pause’ Still to this day I don’t know what I saw. We instantly called the police on the location, but it was never found, not even the building. We had the picture as proof, but nobody believed either me or my dad. That thing I saw that night had changed mine and my dads lives for ever, and the worst thing is that its still out their somewhere, but we don’t know where.

  • 40. Resource List Resource Owned/C ost What sound effect will it be used for/info? Sound Recorder Owned (College) This is a very essential component when doing this project and or anything similar in and or around audio production. This will record the sound needed to produce an end product to this assignment, alongside giving an source to making something for my audience to hear. Adobe Premier Pro CC Owned (College) This is yet another very important aspect in this whole project, as without having this I would be unable to attach any sound produced in previous steps (Adobe Audition) to a picture. For example, when reviewing a podcast etc on YT, there is a picture and or more to represent it. Adobe Audition Owned (College) This here software is also very necessary in producing a good final product to this audio project. Specifically, this software is where and how you put together your different sounds gathered; alongside this, it also allows a very accurate editing aspect to your audio, through slight shifts. YouTube Free The software here, YouTube, is very helpful when creating something that is appreciable to others, as there are countless options available; however, in the case of not being able to use the software, it would still be achievable to manufacture a decent output to the task. Garage Band Owned (College) Once again, this software is helpful, but it is manageable without it. Garage band is predominantly only to be used when music is required in a sequence/scene; mainly as it evokes a range of feelings and a realistic factor towards my peers, all of which are very intentional. Adobe Photoshop Owned (College) This not a necessary and required feature to the whole project, but it does incorporate more skills and reflect a much more thoughtful production. Using Photoshop, it will allow myself to add a thumbnail to the video, once uploaded to YouTube, meaning its more easily identifiable. Car Owned (Parents) During the story, a car is referred, here a car sound will be implemented; partially to make it much more believable in the situation, but also as a way to reflect the story more efficiently throughout my audience. An aspect that is essential when making a ghost experience novel. Jacket (Rain) Owned (Personal) Another sequence in the narrative is when Tim grabs his phone out of his pocket to show Dad (George) a picture. This scene holds great importance, and as a result of this needs to be as realistic as possible, making it much more believable to create tension in the audience listening.
  • 41. Resource List - Continued Resource Owned/C ost What sound effect will it be used for/info? Newspaper/Paper Owned/£1 (Local Shop) During the narrative, there is a moment here where Tim interrupts his father by barging through a doorway, at this point, as an added feature, I have intended on him putting down a newspaper to reflect the scene even more’ by doing so, it my evoke more emotions in my audience. People N/A This is a much more obvious essential to the whole process of making something, this is predominantly because without others it would be impossible to produce anything; otherwise it would show a lack of skills in the work, resulting in lower marks overall and absence in thought. Bushes N/A (Nature Is Free) This may seem very vague, but the prominent section of the narrative, where he experience these paranormal actions, occurs within a forested area of isolated wildlife; in recognition of this, it seems appropriate to add some natural effects to make it more realistic and effective. Door Owned (college/home) During the narrative, there is a moment where Tim interrupts his father, this occurs twice actually, where he barges through a doorway; during this scene, to evoke the situation more, it only seems necessary to incorporate the sound of a door, to help reflect the scenario further.
  • 43. Daily Reflection Day 1 What Have I Done – Today, remarking the 27th of January, I had predominantly recorded a large range of sounds, narrative that is required for my project; these consist of some sound effects, that will be implemented throughout the course of the audio drama, alongside the main narrative of the story, which is recorded by myself doing the voice over of the narrative and Tim (the teenager), whilst also having Dan Firth do the voice over of George (the father). Furthermore, another aspect completed in todays work consists of finishing of the final script. This is essential, as without such component I would be unable to produce anything that is effective, whilst also making it more effective towards my audience, as more reflective language and techniques are evident; it is also important to mention that this was completed before the recording phase, as obviously without this peripheral it would be impossible to produce anything, unless using the draft example as an alternative, which would portray a poorly produce script. Methods/Tools Used - Initially, in chronological order and beginning with when writing up the final script, I had used the online thesaurus as a method to evoke a range of sophisticated language throughout my work; in using more vocabulary, it can help reflect some of the different ideals and thoughts that I want to display in my work and in my audience, all of which would evidently portray a much more professional and well thought out information regarding my project as a whole. Furthermore, another method was using my previously made script draft. I had composed this very well to be complementary of my final script, meaning that it was very detailed and very accurate to the final piece; and in doing so, I had used it adjacent to when writing up my final calligraphy, making the whole process much more efficient and less time consuming to do both as they hold very similar style of narratives. In addition, we had swiftly moved onwards to the production phase upon concluding the final script piece, and then used predominantly the cut tool, with a few shortcut keys, to begin the process of refining the recordings. This tool allowed myself to effectively and efficiently shorten down the recording to an appropriate length, as a restriction to the project is that it must be 3 – 8 minuets in duration – whereas mine was around 12 mins 30 secs; alongside that, it is very easy to manage and use adequately, evidently meaning that the amount of time allocated was significantly reduced in the process, of which was very necessary as the current time in being behind was about 2 days in schedule. It is also important to acknowledge that all I did with this process was shorten it down to a more reasonable length of 10 minuets, whilst also considering and keeping a sufficient amount of detail so the narrative is easily understood, otherwise it can be complicated and less engaging, defeating the point of this audio drama of which consists of being tense, engaging, fearful
  • 44. Daily Reflection (Day 1) - Continued Thoughts/Feelings – Today I feel was very productive to how much work I had produce, alongside to the extent I how happy and pleased I am with the amount of dedication and detail that is implemented throughout. Initially, in regards to the final script piece, I had completed this under the space of 1 and a half lessons, this personally is quite an achievement in comparison to the amount of detail and total amount of written work I had undergone; furthermore, when considering how much I had produced, this has significantly reduced the time gap I was behind with my work, catching up completely as the previous amount was accomplished in my own spare time, giving room for other activities and possibly more important aspects (production of the product). Subsequently, I had also started some production for the main product of the whole project, this consisted of trimming the original footage to a more reasonable length, and was undergone in about a further 1 and a half lessons – completing the first day of my weeks process on the final product; even though it may seem small, this had significantly altered the whole process over the next couple of days, increasing my productivity speed, as cutting down the footage could be eliminated from further events, and evidently means that I could focus more on the general effect in my audience through the use of different sound effects and music styles to evoke these different emotions – mainly coming under fear, anxiety and tension.
  • 45. Daily Reflection (Days 2 – 3) What Have I Done - Over the course of the next 2 days, of which finished off the weeks work, I had predominantly just focused on progressing my main audio drama, of which is focusing on a ghost story as stated in the initial briefing to the audio project; specifically, when considering making my product, I had refined the cutting to my recordings, and implemented some sound effects alongside to follow the narrative a dialogue parts. Initially, and a crucial aspect to acknowledge within my work was cutting down the narration, it is important to realize that my work had previous consisted of about 12 minuets length - this needed to be 3 - 8 mins or a suitable length for my peers - and so it was essential to shorten down; after a prolonged amount of tweaking with the videos length I had reduced it to about 10 minutes, this was good regarding that the story was still understandable, however with some more consideration to introduction music i had once again shortened the duration by another 30 seconds to the peak of its ability with the chosen novel. Additionally to finishing off the reduction in length, specifically when during sections of dialogue between characters, I had implemented a range of sound effects; these predominantly consisted around interactive objects and footsteps, all of which helped reflect the scenario and an understanding throughout my audience , evidently making it much more engaging, and visually imaginative which strives an intriguing factor to keep on listening, from which enjoyment is established effectively without affecting the audio drama’s length and viewers personal time. Methods/Tools Used - Upon first trimming down the footage of voice recordings for the narrative and separate dialogues, I had used the razer tool, alongside the method of slightly tapping the arrow keys, to precisely allot the different speeches when they are required in my product. Originally, and most obviously, the razor tool when used can split the selected footage into separate pieces, meaning that you could either shorten down lengths of footage, remove errors in your footage, or completely delete it from existence; this can also be used through the shortcut key ‘c’, reducing the total amount of time spent on this aspect, and replacing it with extra time for what requires more attention. Following on from this tool, this method, consisting of using both the left and right arrow keys, allows myself to accurately select and/or cut the different footage to precise readings; the arrow keys act as a transition between each frame, either left or right, and we're used effectively to manage the different voices in my audio project, whilst also being very efficient in reducing the length of my whole media source I am producing.
  • 46. Daily Reflection (Days 2 – 3) - Continued Thoughts/Feelings - Over the course of the past 2 days, though I had predominantly just worked on the duration and extra details to realism, I strongly evoke the feeling that I have produced a lot, and to a substantial amount of detail, in the given amount of time to spare with working on my audio drama. Initially, in regards to the process of trimming down the footage, this had been accomplished over a prolonged amount of time, consisting of about 6 hours of lessons, from which had exceeded my expectations in recognition that still a lot of sufficient work was required in the production phase; however, it is important to acknowledge that this was an essential factor within the whole project, primarily because it reduces the overall duration to a much more suitable length within the brief's restrictions, but also because this means less wasted time from my audiences perspective is present by listening to this, evidently resulting in more engagement and enjoyment through my audio work as less worries about possible future plans, and or arrangements, with consideration to their time, is illustrated. Additionally, now in consideration towards the process of implementing sound effects, had I also completed this, yet to a much more reasonable amount of time, consisting of about 3 hours of lessons, from which all the sounds effects had been gathered and placed within their suitable locations during predominantly when dialogue is featured; the use of effects had primarily been resolved around both adding a sense of realism to my work, whilst also portraying a larger variety of skills towards my peers. Originally, when endorsing on implementing sound effects, they add more of an authority of realism within the piece, this can seemingly make the story much more believable and realistic, especially when considering a controversial theme of the paranormal; furthermore, this makes it much more engaging and understanding of the situation towards my audience, whilst also evoking these different emotions frequently throughout – these predominantly consisting of fear, anxiety and tension – something that is incredibly crucial and significant when the horror/thriller genre is portrayed. Additionally, and most finally, another aspect to consider is the amount of skills I am displaying through the inclusion of these extra features; they help reflect the amount of detail and effort that I have accustomed to this project, whilst also developing a range of new skills, from which will most likely help refine my future careers.
  • 47. Daily Reflection (Days 4 – 6) What Have I Done - Over the course of the final few days, I had mainly focused on finishing off the whole production for my audio project, of which is focusing on a ghost story as stated in the initial briefing to the assignment; specifically speaking, when acknowledging the different components that still need referring to, i had finished off my product by including a variety of different music choices. Upon the completion of last week's work, all that was required, to accomplish this phase in the production line, was by implementing a range of music choices; these predominantly had focused around the music producer Kevin Macleod, with some from Vivek Abhishek as well, all of which are royalty free and easily accessible from the personals. Initially it is crucial to recognise that the music choice evokes the different emotions required for my ghost story, these primarily consisting of fear, anxiety and tension, all of which make the audio drama much more engaging and understanding throughout my audience, a key factor to establish in any source of media; alongside this, as I had previously mentioned, they are all very accessible and easy to manage, evidently causing myself to reduce the total amount of allotted time given and make my time more efficient, something that to current time isn't necessary, but is very helpful in offering further time for other important aspect in the project (evaluation). Methods/Tools Used - Upon implementing the choices of music within my work, I had used the razer tool to separate the audio in regions, as well as audio transitions to shift between each individual track. Originally, and most obviously, the razor tool when used can split the selected audio into separate pieces, meaning that you could either shorten down lengths of music, remove specific sections, or completely delete it from existence; this can also be used through the shortcut key ‘c’, reducing the total amount of time spent on this aspect, and replacing it with extra time for what requires more attention in the assignment. Following this, some transitional fades, and audio gains had been used to help portray the shifts between the different music choices and or tension increases; by implementing these effects, it allows a smooth development in the narrative, whilst also evoking professionalism and more of an emotional connection throughout, something that is very essential across the media industry and most specifically my product being produced.
  • 48. Daily Reflection (Days 4 – 6) - Continued Thoughts/Feelings - Over the course of the past week, i had predominantly focused on aspects that would conclude the production phase for the assignment, this predominantly being the musical features, and I feel that I have effectively done this with the extent of how happy and pleased I am with the amount of dedication and work produced for my audio drama throughout the times passing. Upon completion of last week's processes - primarily consisting of finishing the script, recording the required aspects, cutting footage, and sound effects - i had moved onwards to implementing a range of musical elements, from which would reflect the scenarios more. In regards to this aspect, I had completed this over the course of 3 days; this may seem a lot for working on just the musical aspects, but this is very essential in provoking the different emotions I want to demonstrate and arouse throughout my audience - these predominantly consisting of fear, anxiety and tension. Additionally, whilst also constructing my musical elements, small justifications to transitions and distortion regions were applied similarly. Furthermore, the choice of music selected effectively reflects the creepy, horror/thriller scheme I am portraying, all of which helps support more of an understanding and engagement throughout my audience, this being something that can develop a sense of enjoyment and interest.
  • 50. Research Strengths – Upon having completed the main production of my audio project (ghost story), alongside it already having been uploaded to YouTube for review, research was a key factor to consider when this task was introduced to myself and others in my class. Initially, when moving onwards with this phase of the projects processes, it’s evident that my knowledge level in this industry would be significantly lower than required to produce something adequate for the activity in hand; this is recognized upon realizing that I had no previous insight to audio production, meaning a large range of skills had also developed in the process of researching different sources, all of which may significantly benefit future careers and tasks acquired. Furthermore, in recognizing these variety of sources, from which I had evaluated, it has opened up a larger interest of mine; evidently meaning that I enjoy more variation in the media industry, of which will be useful for future careers and when working with other products to improve the overall quality, not just for audio projects but also in film/TV and other platforms. Weaknesses – Vice versa regarding weaknesses, as it is also similarly important and a crucial aspect to consider in my project, as this predominantly only is necessary across my bibliography. Initially it is important to recognize that I personally believe my research aspects – including insights to Doctor Who, The Archers, and Mr Nightmare – are up to a high level of accuracy and necessary information within them, evidently meaning that I reflect everything required in my work. Otherwise, the only issues in this phase, which primarily stand out from others, is that my bibliography could be improved; by doing so it would offer more information as well as skills and aspects that I could include within my own work when I eventually reach the making stage of my ghost story.
  • 51. Planning Strengths – Following on from the research phase comes planning my main production to the activity in hand (ghost story). Initially, once I had finalized my general story line and ideas for the paranormal event i am portraying in this project - in the previous ideas phase - I had begun by drafting a simplistic script of which reflected my narrative and ideals I want to get across my audience; in doing so, this had effectively helped with the next stage of creating a final script, as I could follow a similar process and use some aspects from it in my official script for the project, all of which made this phase much more time efficient and detailed, as for more sophisticated and engaging techniques could be implemented in the extra time acquired from producing a draft before. Furthermore, in the displayed music page of my planning phase, I had included a feature portraying my different music choices and sound effects necessary for my audio drama; as this page is present with links to the music, this significantly helped in the production phase further, as time management is reduced in easily accessing the different sounds needed, as well as being able to easily identify what sound effects are necessary/ and or required to be in a scene to make it much more engaging/effective to my audience. Something incredibly essential to mention that was performed in this step was the gathering of sounds. Using zapsplat and YouTube, a range of very compelling sound effects and or music was gathered; this was significant when realizing that the choice of music during the tracks play through evokes these different emotions in my audience, an aspect that is crucial to conjure when the audio drama is strongly represented by a genre. This can be well demonstrated when something emotionally controls you over yourself and your own actions, meaning that it has effectively gathered your interest and can make you either cry (sadness), laugh (comedy), tense (horror) and or controversial (anger). Weaknesses – Next, regarding weaknesses in this development to the project, there isn't many to refer - as far as I am aware in my PowerPoint/information. The only thing to consider is when writing up my final script, it had taken a prolonged amount of time, more than expected; I strongly believe that this couldn't have been avoided, otherwise a significantly lower quality to my work would be demonstrated, but it is important to recognize that this reduced the total amount of time accustomed to me, evidently affecting my production further down the line. Similarly the draft had also taken a long time to do, preventing myself from working on upcoming, controversially more important aspects of my process production – such as the final script and or sounds of which evoke the feelings in my audience.
  • 52. Time Management Furthermore, now considering aspects of time management, I strongly believe that I have not stuck to the expectations of keeping on track with time, however I have completed everything in the running order of the production. Initially beginning with my experiments, I had completed these on time, in having started and finished this through less than a weeks progress upon introduction to the audio project; however, moving onwards to the researching phase, of which was to also be completed during the same week, when considering making my own audio drama - specifically under a ghost story - I had slightly lacked in finishing this over the same allotted time over the course of pre planned assessment. Furthermore, now in the second week of the project, I had begun using the first couple of lessons to complete my research, reducing the necessary time for other aspects but finishing this feature at a great amount of detail. As the research had been completed, it was now required to get all of the planning for my product done. Starting this phase, I had pushed myself further to try make up some time for the previous processes (research), this had slightly worked as for by the end of the week all the pages - including sound effects, actors, music, resource list, and partially the draft script - had been completed to a good standard; this evidently left me finishing the draft and moderately completing the final script over the course of the weekend, in my free time. Additionally this moved to production, where I had used the week to finish the script and whole project; evidently meaning that my time management had caught up to where I should have been in the previous events, accomplishing each phase per week. In conclusion, it is important to mention that I obviously wasn't on track with my time management throughout the whole process of start to finish, but I did eventually reach the end of making my product, and on time, significantly different to my expectations as of 2 weeks ago where I was about 2 days behind time. If I had more time to work on my whole project, I would work more on the visual aspect of my product when on YouTube, as it is only a simplistic edited image denoting a old wooden cabin within the mise-en-scene of a dark forested/overgrown backdrop; specifically, I would implement an animated glitch effect whenever a distortion occurs throughout the narrative, as well as this I could also add a dark figure - or something very similar - when one of my characters refer to the ghostly encounter, all of which would make it much more engaging and effective in reflecting tension and fear emotions predominantly in my audience. If not mentioned already, I wouldn’t change most and or any of my written work, mainly because I am very happy with the outcomes to each page in this PowerPoint, but also because it would make the process longer lasting, of which could cause a delay in compleashion of work and uploading it
  • 53. Technical Qualities Initially, when considering technical qualities within my work, i would strongly evoke the feeling that there is a wide range of technical variation and skills implemented throughout the course of my audio project; in recognition of including a lot of different sound effects, from within the dialogue and distortion components, and music alterations, from predominantly the music producer Kevin Macleod, i would consider this reflective of being complicated. By including all of these different aspects, frequently throughout the course of the whole narrative, this significantly adds a complication in not make the main source too overpowering by music, speaking and or sound effects; evidently this means a prolonged amount of time had been spent covering all the different features, and minimizing them through cuts to fade between different tones, all of which had evidently aroused emotions of mainly fear, anxiety and tension, reflecting my thoughts on strongly displaying a detailed account of technical variation. Furthermore, it is also important to justify my reasonings behind different effects and techniques used within my work, these consisting around expositional gains and fades (transitions), alongside the inclusion of sound alterations in the pitch and distortions of speech. Originally, in acknowledgement of the different transition sound effects, the expositional gains had been used when tension is a specific sound effect was required, whilst also simplistic fades represented changes in the narrative/tone towards the scenario being displayed in the audio drama. Illustrating the productive use of a quick sound gain, this created an instantaneous sense of tension within my audience, all of which made it much more engaging and understanding to the situation at current hand, as it had predominantly been used when the tension gain sound effect had been implemented to denote the transition between time and uncertain mystery; whereas with the simple fade, this was frequently used for a shift in music choice when it was needed quickly and efficiently in keeping the narrative freely flowing, smoothly and professionally. Additionally, I had also used a sound pitch changer, during the process of distortions, along with a distortion alteration to the narration, of which will also be used during the process of distortions that frequently occur across the whole audio drama. Upon the occurrence of a short distortion phase, simulating a slight paranormal activity in tampering with the recording, I had cut this section into multiple regions, then applying a pitch changer to every other component and altering it to a deep vocal; this had been created in hopefully reflected a ghoulish resemblance, creating tension within my audience, alongside a slight factor of anxiety to suit the ghost stories requirements and provoke my audiences emotions. Moreover, I had then enforced the distortion effect, to help with the ‘hopefully’ clear comparison between human and ghost encounters, similarly to the use of the pitch shifter.
  • 54. Aural Qualities Strengths - Sound is the most important aspect around this whole project, focusing in and around aural qualities and alterations that can be made to produce something amazing; and specifically speaking about my work, there are a lot of positives about predominantly the use of sound effects, music choices and skills developed in the process of making. Upon realizing that i have never produced anything with recognition to details in sound, this was completely new to myself, and so in recognition everything produced was a new skill i had accomplished; and so it's evident that learning all of these skills will help with any future careers for myself, especially in wanting to work around the media industry where every intellectual advancement is necessary in producing something exceptional for the community watching/and or listening. Furthermore, another feature to consider - which i had effectively achieved throughout the course of my whole audio project - is my music choices; these predominantly had focused around the music producer Kevin Macleod, with some from Vivek Abhishek as well, all of which are royalty free and easily accessible from the personals. Initially it is crucial to recognize that the music choice evokes the different emotions required for my ghost story, these primarily consisting of fear, anxiety and tension, all of which make the audio drama much more engaging and understanding throughout my audience, a key factor to establish in any source of media; alongside this, as i had previously mentioned, they are all very accessible and easy to manage, evidently causing myself to reduce the total amount of allotted time given and make my time more efficient, something of which was very necessary in being behind schedule by roughly about 2 days (yet was achieved to be back on target by this). And most finally, in regards to use of sound effects, these made the structural parts (where dialogue was present) much more believable and realistic to my peers; through the use of primarily footsteps and interactive objects, it also makes it more understanding and visually imaginative to my audience, as for they can begin to portray the scenarios more efficiently in their imagination, something that is very necessary and effective within an fully audio based drama.
  • 55. Aural Qualities - Continued Weaknesses - In comparison, when regarding flaws in the production line, these predominantly up hear around a small range of options and a lower state of quality in the sound effects implemented, these were specifically identified when requiring footsteps running through either a grassy texture and/or a muddy pathway, alongside other features of slamming a door and when needing heavy breathing. The main problem had initially begun by discovering the right sound for the narrative that would fit in well with the scenario i am reflecting, because out of the ‘millions’ of sounds available, I couldn't identifying anything that was significantly suiting; this had evidently caused my self to determine the most corresponding effect, of which worked, but not to the extent of my desires with the project and what i want to produce for my peers, leaving an understanding but not entirely engrossing audience. Following, once the sound had been gathered, it was most clear that the quality isn't as good as anticipated, causing it to in worst case scenario distorted because of the pitch; this can make it seems even less realistic, and convey a bad representation of myself in the production of it, making a poor judgement and understanding to the audio drama throughout my audience.
  • 56. Audience Appeal Initially it is important to refine my target audience, of which consists of psychographic interest of the paranormal, podcasts/audio based drama, and/or maybe the horror genre, and then most finally demographics of predominantly both genders between the ages of 16 - 35 - yet this may differ with some anomalies for the older generation - and the lower to working class of money incomes. Originally, with psychographics, it seems most relevant that there is an interest towards either the paranormal specifically, or slightly off with mysterious events, alongside with audio dramas and/or podcasts; this is primarily because its an audio drama I'm producing which suits their needs effectively, but also because it's about a ghostly encounter, whilst also holding the mystery genre with a cliffhanger at the end of the narrative, evidently meaning that it will be more understanding and engaging for the audience listening. Furthermore, it might also satisfy people within the interest of the thriller/horror genres; its most obvious through the inclusion of a ghostly figure, holding similar characteristics and stereotypes that you would see across other media platforms in this genre, but also because throughout the majority of the novel, whether it's the music, sound effects, and or narration, a fearful and tense perception is present, similar to other thriller sources, of which evoke these key emotions of fear, anxiety and tension to make it much more engaging and understanding of the current situation of the storyline. Following on from this, now taking shape of the demographics, it is important to consider that this audio project does not specifically target towards a gender of choice; this is primarily because the paranormal activity theme holds a very extensive variety of options to take shape under, yet in some cases this is only positive feedback, for it allows a wider audience to get involved, all of which may resolve in upcoming new hobbies and interests for the audience. This also holds similarities across the age barriers i have targeted it towards, this being 16 - 35, because it could easily stretch to the older generation, captivate all ages; however, i do strongly recommend that the minimalist age starts from 16, this is predominantly because younger audiences may get frightened easily over slightly worrying and mysterious events/encounters, all of which may affect their personal health by living paranoid about controversial topics which may or may not be true to life. And most finally, it is also addressed to the lower and or working class of people in the ranks of money income; I must admit that this can differ with anomalies, but it is primarily this class that people views would be more distinctive around, partially because it is a good example of escapism from their generally poorer backgrounds, but also because typically young adults will not earn a serious amounts of money, evidently meaning that media sources are an effective way to provoke enjoyment from which not a lot of money is spent but a long time of entertainment can be identified.

Editor's Notes

  1. Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme.
