1. Reflection Journal Week Two
ResearchPart One
I started to research lots of details about whatI needed to create my romantic
comedy silent film. My number one priority was to research aboutmelodrama
and slapstick becausethis is whatmy film is about, obviously, butI need to
know how to supportmy actors with extreme drama by using body language
and facial expression. I wantto make my characters look much better than in
my horror films. My horror film characters weren’t melodramatic enough
because the fact, my friends who haveno experience acting and we didn’t
have any rehearsaltime.
This time I will be planning to rehearse beforefilming. I discussed with my
tutor about involving a river which one of my characters will be falling into.
Unfortunately, my tutor thinks that isn’t a good idea for two reasons: I will
need to get permission to jump in the river and my actor may get injured
jumping in. I agreed with my tutor because that might be dangerous to do. My
tutor gave me another idea, for example a character slipping and falling on a
banana skin.
I researched on YouTube and watched Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd
because they havelots of slapstick style comedy. I realised that they are
professionalstuntmen which myself and my actors are not. I was thinking
about how to avoid injury when I fall over. I need to keep researching about
this.
I’mresearching aboutscreen kissing becausethat is important to understand
before I write my scriptor discuss with my actors. Before I researched, I was
wondering if college has any rules about physicalcontact during productions,
specifically kissing. I wantto include this in my romantic comedy.
That is what I was very interested about becauseI want to learn to be
prepared for the future whenever I create films with a kiss. I researched on
the web and in a book to find some information about a kiss. I found a website
which talked about stageand film kissing and I was surprised that it’s the
actor’s decision to accept or not accept kissing scenes. I respectthe actor’s
decision on this. I don’t wantto disagreewith my actor’s decision because I
want all my actors to feel comfortable to do that.
2. I want to create a small part in my film, which is a romantic comedy, to havea
kissing scene.
I created a survey through Survey Monkey. I created ten questions asking
about my comedy silent film. But my tutor read them and told me to change
them, think carefully what I wanted to know that would help develop ideas for
the film. I tried to write different questions without to asking about my idea for
the film. But my interpreter helped me to create questions to ask my audience
about something funny or embarrassing experiences in real life. I received lots
of hilarious answers frommy audience but I realised some of my audience may
have lied or made-up answers. I was disappointed thatsome of my audience
skipped some my questions. I was happy that I got 19 answers from my
audience and I will writeabout their answers.
