3. For preparation for making my film, I needed to do some research In order to get some information about my film.
I talk about the target audience, three products which I would like to potentially include in my film, some analysis
of my practice work, and a proposal.
Strengths
The strengths of research would be finding out the BBFC rating. I easily understand what each rating had
included and its borderlines, which helped me compare it to my film, and rate it. This helped me understand what
content was allowed to be included in my short film, and what the border lines are for each rating. The benefit of
this is that Iâve made a film that everyone can see (regardless of age).
Also, another strength would be the production techniques. This gave me a chance to look into the products I
want to consider using, and find out how they are used in movies, and the situations to include them in. The
production techniques were possible to research (using the internet), and as Iâm looking into something I'm
interested in, I enjoyed watching clips from films that included the product, and interested in how they used each
technique. I combined this with my previous learning from the last project.
Weakness
One thing which I struggled with would be the primary and secondary research. It was mainly the primary
research. The research didnât tell me much specific detail about the audience, as the questions werenât specific
enough. Some people would comment I donât know, or press the âotherâ option (with no specification). These
options leave me with having to guess what they said, as I donât know fully why they pressed the other option. To
improve, I would have made more option questions, and put please specify at the end of the other options. This
would have given me a better bar chart to show percentages of the options, and with the other box, it would have
shown me a range of answers of why the audience pressed other, narrowing down who my target audience are.
Also, I had some issues with writing up the proposal. The reason is because I struggled with writing up the target
audience. There were areas about the audience which I didnât previously research, and had to guess based on
my film; for example, the class of the audience. This lead me having think into more depth of the type of people
that would pay to see the film, which was hard to do, as I donât fully know who would actually pay for the film
based on class. If I could do anything better, I would look into more products that I could include in my film. By
doing more research, I could have had a more clear understanding of what to include in my film.
4. Planning was the first thing which I had to do for my short film. For planning, I had made four different spider
diagrams. Three were idea generators, and the last one was a final idea. After the spider diagram, I did a
storyboard with 15 pictures, relating with what I would like to have in my film. Following on, I did some visual
planning in the 4th power point. I made a mood board, which I include any sort of inspiration to do with my film, key
moments, in which I draw up a key scene in my film. I then talk about the look (Mise-en-scene) of the film, in which
I explain the things I include to show meaning. I then did two storyboards, the shot list, location planning and
booking
Strengths
One strength which I had would be planning out three different ideas. Rather than doing one big spider diagram, I
did three different spider diagrams with three separate ideas. The method worked, as it allowed me to pick out the
benefits of each idea, and see which one could potentially be the best one. Secondly, the hand drawn idea was
another strength. The reason is because it shows my custom intentions for what I want the scene to look like,
rather than another image found from the internet. Lastly, making the storyboard was another strength. The
reason for this is because it shows me what the scenes I will act out may look at, so with planning, it showed me
what I could do in each scene.
Weaknesses
The first weakness which I had would be booking the studio and the equipment. The booking didnât go through
properly, leading me having to delay filming, and waste time. If I could go back, I would book earlier, so I could
more likely get what I want on the right day, and also, I would pre read my booking status, so that I would be sure
that there are no mistakes, so that I know that I will get my equipment at the right time. Another weakness which I
had would be the final idea mood board. The reason for this is because it doesnât say anything different to the idea
that I already have. I would just add onto my chosen idea, rather than a final mood board; if I did it again, as I
could have developed up better idea of what I want in my film, leading me to have potentially made my film better,
and saved time from making the final idea.
5. With the whole project, I had to keep an eye of time, so that I donât waste it. Id say that I had my
issues with organisation for the film, which wasted about an hour and a half of useful production
time. But, with filming, I did manage to end filming at the time I wanted it to end which was before
Wednesday. With the presentations, id say that on some presentations, I was organised with time,
but on the other hand, there was one slide which had a bit of delayed time. Slides one, two and four
were all done in the weeks which they were started in; but slide five didn'tât start until week four.
This leaves me a small time schedule to finish it in. The editing of the film, lasted for a week (5
college days). The film as finished, but I believe that I needed additional time to finish it. If I had
more time, I would have added more into my film, like electric (lightning beams), or dimming lights. I
also would have booked my equipment and studio request earlier (a week before). This would have
given me a higher chance of having what I requested, and I could have booked at an earlier date so
that I have more time in the future to edit, and do this slide. The first three slides were all completed
on time, and all organised. I donât really need any additional time for those slides, as they show all
of the information it required.
As a whole, if I were given more additional time, I would have firstly done my reflection earlier (each
week), so that i have a more fuller understanding of what happened on the day, as I only would
have to focus on something I did the week before. Secondly, I would have spent longer filming. I
would have done more additional shot of the scenes, so that I would have had a wider range of
shots to choose from.
6. DifferencesSimilarities
Short Shots
Both films use at least one short
shot(s) to show a close up of
something important to the film. With
the black hole, its when the man puts
his hand in the black hole, Time and
place is when the character presses
the watch at the beginning.
Same use of long shots
Both films include long shots, and for
the same reason. They both use it to
show the surrounding environment.
The black hole use it at the beginning
to show the man is in an office
,alone. Time and place use it for the
teleporting scenes, to show that the
character has disappeared from the
area.
Mie en scene
Both films follow a similar colour
scheme to show meaning in the
film. They both use a blue green
tint onto the f0i0l0m to show
excitement, and also fear. The
black hole use it to show
excitement to this mysterious
piece of paper. Time and place
use it to show excitement over the
watch.
Different ways of filming
Both Films have different lengths of
long shot usage. Time and place
always use it constantly, whilst The
black hole only use is at the
beginning, and two other times.
Also, Time and place includes a
dolly shot, whilst the black hole
doesnât.
Locations
Both films are set in different
areas. The black hole consists of
only two separate areas (the
office and the cupboard).Whilst
Time and place jump from
multiple areas, and go into
different countries. So They both
are different, as they experience
different backgrounds.
Lighting setting
The black hole is set in a more darker setting, with
flickering lights in the background (as its set late at
night), whilst Time and place are in lighter areas, as its
set in an open college , and other areas during
daylight.

7. DifferencesSimilarities
Diegestic
Time and place consists of diegestic
and non diegestic sounds in it, as it
has the background music to show
tension in the character. LOOP
doesnât include any background
music, as all of the natural sound is
amplified in it.
Amplifying sound
Both films over amplify the natural
sounds. LOOP does it with the
bang, and the phone etc. Whereas
time and place do it during the lift
scene, and vending machine
scene.
Dialog
LOOP didnât have any speech in it
what so ever, as everything was
described through mise en scene.
But, time and place had a sentence
spoken out right at the very end of
the film, so that the complimentary
quote was used in a good part of
the film.
Mise en scene
both films explain meaning through
the audio of the film. Time and
place do it by adding power up
noises to the teleport, to show the
power the watch has, and tension
music, to show something bad is
going to happen. LOOP shows
meaning, with the police radio
noise. This explains why the
character had attempted running
away, as he hears something you
want to avoid.
Naturalistic./Non naturalistic
The sounds on loop are all real sounds that you
may hear in everyday life. For example the
phone bleep, and the mug smashing are real life
sounds. In time and place, the sounds arnât real,
as the teleport sound isnât a real life noise you
will hear, as teleporting isnât real.

8. DifferencesSimilarities

om/watch?v=itMHVpX
o2lU
Flash
Both films include an
expanding flash when the
devices activate. Plot device
has a white flash as soon as
the button is pressed. Time an
place have an electric ball that
expands when the watch
activates.
Length
The films have different lengths of
rolling time. Plot device is al long
film that lasts for nine minutes
leaving a longer story told. Whilst
time and place was one minute
film, with a story told faster. There
were cut scenes in time and place
to get it to one minute.
Colour change transition
The films have different ways to
show transitioning to somewhere
else. Time and place show the
character disappearing from the
scene, then appear in the next
scene. whilst plot device change
the colour tint of the theme to
show its in a different scene
Keying
Both films use an element of
Chroma keying with a green
screen. Plot device use it for
the alien space ship scene,
and time and place use it for
the desert, arctic and limbo
scene.
Light
The film uses a red glow on the button of the
device to indicate that the device is turned
on, whereas my film only shows its turned on
when the lightning bolt appears where the
character stands.
9. This slide is talking about my film as a whole. Id say that my film was very creative and the idea was
thought outside of the box. The reason for this is because of the non naturalistic storyline that turns
into a disaster at the end. Also, it was creative because I has a secret meaning at the end. The film
shows the character is taking his power for granted, until disaster strikes. This shows a metaphorical
consequence that can happen when you abuse your power. With the final product, id say that it did
look the way Intended it to look, with the electric ball expanding to cover up the character
disappearing, and the keying sort of looked the way I intended it to. There was some areas of my
film which I wasnât happy with. One would be some cut scenes to show the character disappearing.
Some of the cuts (mainly the ones with people in the background) didnât properly work, as some
people change positions when the cut happens, ruining the effect. Also, the green screen keying
didnât completely work. Some folds and shadows are clearly visible in some scenes. This ruins the
effect, as it makes a shadowed square around the character, showing that it has been keyed. The
first visual that I liked about my film would be the audio. I was happy with the power up noise when
the electric ball appeared, as the audio adds excitement to the footage, as you wonder what this
noise will build up to. Also, I liked the plot and storyline of my film. I liked the twist and cliff hanger I
put into the end, to make you feel stressed for the character, as he is in a situation nobody wants to
be in. If I could improve anything, I would fix the transitions, so that the transition cut doesnât have
any faults in it. To do this, I could have en-lined the shots better, or make the electric ball really big,
to cover the screen, and make it small again. This would hide the faulty continuity, when the scenes
cut changes. Also, I would improve my keying scenes. There are some shadows from the green
screen that appear in some scenes. I would improve this by feathering out the shadow, or cropping
out the shadow from the video.
Strengths
One thing which was a strength with the film was the lightning bolt effect that appeared in the
transition. It was a good cover up for the character disappearing, as it shows something exiting, as
you see this mysterious lightning ball that isn't something youâd see every day. So the lightning ball
adds excitement. Also, another strength which I have for my film would be structure of my story. The
story itself is a strength, as it shows the disasters of having power. Itâs a story which is interesting to
watch, and includes a message of the abuse of power.
Weaknesses
One weakness which I had would be the disappearing transitions the character has. on some
scenes where the character disappears, there are some continuity mistakes which occurs.
Sometimes the camera shot moved slightly, making it obvious that itâs a cut. Also, the background
have parts where someone is making a different pose in the different shots. This is a weakness, as
its hard to edit out, and a continuity mistake is visible in the film. Also another weakness which I had
with the film would be keying out the green screen. There is some shadows which appear from the
background of the character (which is areas which didnât disappear during keying. This stops the
scene from looking realistic, and shows how obvious that the scene was filmed on a green screen.
10. CGI and plot. My questionnaire told me that the target audience
focuses on the cgi and the plot. I've included a lot special
effects in my film. I've made the cgi as the important features
that are something that stands out. This was so that the cgi is
noticeable to the audience, so that it brings what they want in
fantasy films. I've also focused on the plot of my film. The cgi
matches with the plot of the film. The electric bolt is the power
the watch, the background shows how the character is in a
complete different location to the college. The last bit with the
disaster appeals to the audience, as it shows a cliff hanger
ending.
My questionnaire showed me that the majority of the audience don't review before
watching, showing they like a surprise. I've appealed to my target audience by making my
film unpredictable. I've done this with the cliff hanger ending of the character being stuck in
limbo. I also used a surprise element with the beginning, where you are introduced to the
powerful watch.
My film was uploaded to YouTube which is a video watching site. It isnât
exactly Netflix, but its still follows on the same way to watch videos. The
content in this section doesnât follow with the target audience but the way you
watch the film matches with them, as the majority stream.
I've stated in my research that my audience is under
18 males. I've appealed this in my film by rating my
film universal which is for people under 18, and a
male character. Its under 18, as it is more child
friendly, as there is no blood, or distressing scenes in
my film.
11. Strengths
The one strength to my film would be filming and editing. This was my strong point in the project, as I'm more
creative. I was good at putting the film together. One point would be editing in the special effects and putting my
twit to them to make it blend in with the plot. For example, making the lightning ball follow the character. Also, with
editing, I was good at cutting the scenes to remove the continuity. One example would be hiding the disappearing
man in the canteen scene. The scene ended up looking better, and didnât look obvious that I was hiding
something, as all I needed to do was turn the long shot into a medium shot. Another strength which I had with the
film would be the storyboard and development on the 4th slide. The reason is because I was putting what I imagine
the film to look like into a cartoon story. This helps me have an idea of what my film to look like. Along with the
storyboard, it helped me with the story development, where I write down what goes on in the different scene. Also
the story development was my own work which I created and didnât have to research, so doing my own work was
something that I was better at.
Weaknesses
The first weakness which I had would be the research. One specific one would be the questionnaire that the
students answered. The reason is because of the way I set it out. I didn't tell the students to give detail. This made
it harder for me to figure out and conclude my target audience. Another weakness which I had would be filling in
some of the paper work on the 4th slide. Some paperwork like the shot type was ok, since that is my own intention
for what I want the film to look like, but the location forms, and the pemiton emails were something I struggled
with. The pemiton booking was a problem as it didnât go through properly, as my requested booking times were
not placed, and other slips like the contingency form. I struggled with organising the day, as I wasnât interlay sure If
I were to follow the time schedules . Also, I struggled with the risk assessment too. The reason is I was struggling
to think of the action to take place for the risk, or how to prevent it.
13. ď§ What did you like about the product?
ď§ I really like the concept and how it gives of an 80s arcade game vibe with the
sound effect to his reaction to the watch braking as well as the music and sound
effect changes that occurs when he goes to different parts of the world. I also like
the green screen effects when he goes to different parts of the world as I think it is
very good and convincing.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
There is only one thing I would improve and that is the visual effect used when the
character teleports as it is a good effect but it is obviously from YouTube, if you had
the time maybe you could have animated a quick light flash on After Effects to add
on to give it a more realistic effect, but that Is a minor criticism as I loved the film. ď
-Evaluated by Josh Eastham
14. ď§ What did you like about the product?
I liked the use of different backgrounds
ď§ I liked the way it ended, with him in a bad situation
ď§ What improvements could have been made to the product?
ď§ It was kind of hard to understand what was going on at certain points
throughout, I would probably try to improve this , maybe with some
visual on screen, like what you see in the first diary f a wimpy kid films.
Will Cave
15. ď§ What did you like about the product?
ď§ Imaginative ideas eg. Different backgrounds to represent different
areas
ď§ The flow of the story, sequence of events taking place leading to
something bad and unexpected at the end (cliff hanger)
ď§ What improvements could have been made to the product?
ď§ On certain scenes, special effects continuity needs to be adapted
better eg. Vending machine scene
Katerina Gabriel
16. ď§ What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
ď§ I Agree with the criticism that Josh gave me. and I wish I had included âa flashâ in my film,
which could have made the transition look realistic as it would have looked part of the set. I
also agree with the positive feedback that josh gave me. I agree with the last bit when he says
the use of green screen (location change). It shows to me that the green screen looks realistic
to someone else other than me. Plus Katerinaâs praise to the film is something which I agree
on. I agree with what she says about the story sequence (how it has a cliff hanger to the end
of it), as it shows how my written plot works, as it has been praised. I also agree with what
Katarina says about the improvement. This is an issue which I had with editing on that scene,
but after watching the scene over again, I realise the lightning ball doesnât completely cover
the character when disappearing, making it obvious that itâs a cut..
ď§ What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
ď§ I disagree with wills constructive criticism that will had given. I donât really find it necessary to
have put a pre visual at the beginning, as I wanted to leave my audience to figure out whatâs
going on, without some visual ruining the surprise.
17. One change in which I would make from seeing the feedback would be sorting out the
transitions from the character disappearing. I would fix the issue on the vending machine
scene by expanding the ball more to cover up the character disappearing from the cut. I
would do this because it will hide the fact that the scene is a cut. I would also add a glow
effect to when the lightning bolt appears. If I had done this, it would have made the bolt
look more present in the scene, and would show more power the glow has. Even though
I stated I disagree with what will said, I would like to tweak some bits to make it make
sense. I would have added more sound effects to some parts to make the film more
understandable. For example. I would have added a bell to the classroom scene, to
show that the lesson has ended, showing why the character went to the canteen. I would
have added a beep to the watch when pressing it to show that the character is triggering
the teleportation to show why the ball appears. Lastly to fix what's going on with the
canteen scene. If I were to do it again, I would have included the chocolate bar in the
next classroom scene. I never did that as my original intention was to make the
chocolate bar fall out of my hand. It isnt viable at the end, but if I knew that it weren't
going to be visible, then I would have made the chocolate bar teleport with the character
to the classroom. This would have shown in a better way that the character was going to
get a snack for himself before class starts again.
