QUESTION 2:
How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
■ For my magazine, I am targeting a specific audience
and I’m defining them by gender, age and race.
■ The audience I target is a group of 15 -28 year olds,
working class, mostly a gender of boys/men who are
black and Caucasian. The reason why I say black
and Caucasian boys/men is because first of all, I am
using female artists who are young to attract them.
Also, I'm attracting black and Caucasian boys/men as
black and Caucasian boys at this age tend to listen to
hip-hop/urban music, due to most artists in this genre
being from that race.
■ There will also be an audience of females, but I’m
targeting more of a male audience
■ I’m targeting mostly students in order for them to look
up to the artists in the magazine, so they can strive to
become successful like them and have the things
they portray in the pictures, including materialistic
things, confidence etc.
■ The idea of aiming at students is
reflected in :
- the journalism I used in the DPS, as I
used slang, swear words which they
can relate to as they most likely speak
like that.
- I made sure all the artists wore just
casual clothing, so the audience feel
as if the artists are not much different
to them.
■ My DPS is about a boy who became
successful in a way that people would
never think of, and he one day went to
regular state schools, possibly
allowing the audience to look up to him
and maybe relate to him.
■ I have tried to use fonts and colours
that will appeal to my targeted
audience, so I decided to use the
colour red throughout the
magazine.
■ I chose this colour, as it makes the
magazine look lively, and the colour
has the connotations of power,
strength, energy and most
importantly, determination, which is
what I want my audience to feel
when they read through the
magazine.
■ I managed to challenge a few stereotypes,
however also reinforce some stereotypes in
the journalism:
■ The stereotypes I reinforced is the one of the
black boy having a bad past and upbringing,
as this is what you usually see in the media.
■ On the other hand, the stereotypes I
challenged, is the one where people who
don’t have a good education can’t be
successful, and this is challenged in the
journalism, as this turns out to not be the
case.
