2. READER PROFILE
To help create my reader profile I created a survey in which thirty people from the
college filled out, both boys and girls who fit into my target audience category (ages16-
19). This helped give me inspiration of what to include in my magazine as people were
telling me what they liked to read article wise and what would encourage them to buy a
music magazine. I also set up a one to one interview with a media subject where I asked
what she liked in a music magazine.
For example from the interview I did the feedback I received was to include an interview
for my main article as she said that they were interesting to read. The average price she
pays for a music magazine is £2.50. This helped me decide on the price I would put for
my magazine. For my music magazine I decided I would sell it for £2.00, I think this
would be a fair price for my target audience to pay. This is because my magazine would
be a fortnightly magazine which would include a lot of articles and free posters.
3. GENRE
The reason I chose to do a rock magazine is because it is a popular genre
amongst both genders. It is also popular for teenagers which is suits my target
audience as the age rating I chose was 16-19 years old. I found this out from
my music magazine survey I did in which people from college who fit in my
target audience category mainly voted for rock. Eighteen out of thirty people
said they enjoyed listening to rock music which helped me be inspired to
make one. For my magazine I tried to attract the audience by putting famous
artists and bands on my front cover. For example one of my sell lines is about
Lemmy from Motorhead passing away, I included this as it was one of the
biggest news of a celebrity passing away especially in the rock community.
Many people would recognise the different bands or artists names and would
want to recognise them and buy the magazine as they would want to know
the latest news and updates.
4. COLOUR
For my magazine I used gender neutral colours. Teenage boys wouldn’t
want to read the magazine if they saw the colour pink on it as they would
assume the magazine is for girls. And it also doesn’t fit the theme of rock.
For my magazine front cover I used white, purple and red for my fonts to
stand out from the grey background to catch the readers attention. The
colours I chose do not favour a gender and this would show that this
magazine is for both genders to read.
5. COMPETITION
On my magazine front cover I made a sell line to show there is a
competition and the prize would be band merchandise. The reason I
decided to include a competition is because from my research many
magazines include a competition with prizes such as band tickets. The
reason I chose band merchandise as the prize for my competition is
because it is popular clothing amongst teenagers who listen to rock music
as they are showing what artists they support. Also many people would
want to try and win the competition as this is free merchandise which
means they don’t have to spend their own money making them eager to
join the competition.
6. PRICE
From my music magazine interview one of the questions I asked was the average
price she pays for a magazine. The answer I received was that she pays £2.50 for a
music magazine. on the surveys I did in which people filled in at college the
average price they would be willing to pay was from £1.50-£3.00. I chose to make
my magazine the price of £2.00. The reason I did this is because my magazine
would be a fortnightly issue and I am including free posters and a lot more
articles inside my magazine. I didn’t want to go over £2.00 as many people of my
target audience are students and they might not be able to afford my magazine if
I priced it over £2.00. In my magazine I have up to sixty pages so I would say that
the reader would be getting their money’s worth. In my old drafts I did my
magazine up to 24 pages which would have been unreasonable to charge people
£2.00 as they would not get as many articles.
7. SOCIAL MEDIA
On my contents page I put a Facebook page, a Twitter account and Instagram
account for my music magazine. The reason I chose to do this is because social
media is very popular amongst my target audience and most teenagers own at
least one social media account. I think the reason of this being it is an easy way
to communicate and interact with celebrities by liking or following their pages.
On my social media pages I would put updates of the next magazine. I also put a
twitter account and Facebook page on my contents page for Skye Jones. The
reason I chose to do this because then the reader can go and find out extra
information on the artists album or tour updates. Many teenagers tend to follow
or like their favourite artists social media accounts to show their support for their
favourite artists.
8. INTERVIEWS
For my double page spread I made my article an interview. The reason I
chose to this because from my music magazine interview I was told that
she liked to read interviews because she found them interesting to read.
On my survey 12 out of thirty people admitted that they enjoyed reading
interviews in a music magazine. I personally think that interviews are
interesting to read because it gives you the opportunity to get to know
about your favourite artists from information on their album to their
favourite colour.
