ORIGIN : It is found throughout tropical and
subtropical parts of Africa, Asia and Australia in
semi arid to sub humid regions.
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Sesbania macrocarpa L.
COMMON NAME: Dhaincha/sesbania.
FAMILY: Leguminosea/Fabiacea.

4. IMPORTANCE:
O Sesbania is a restorative crop belonging to the
family leguminosea.
O The roots of the this crop has bacteria containing
nodules used for fixing of atmospheric Nitrogen.
O It can be incorporated in the soil for providing
organic neutrients to the soil.
O It is used to better the quality of soil.
O It is also used as fodder crop.
O It is also used as cover crops
O leaves of dhaincha are a good source of Pinitol,
an anti-diabetic compound

O It is a potential raw material of paper pulp.

STEM:
O Stem is straight globular type.
LEAVES:
O Leaves are pinnate and 10cm long or less and are
of bright green color.
O 20-80 leaflets are there per leaf.

O It has shallow root system having nodules.

O Sesbania tolerates soil pH of from 4.5-7.2

O It can be grown on all types of soil. It gives best
result on sandy loam to loamy soil.

O The field is ploughed and leveled properly.
SEED RATE:
O 22-28 kg/ha for manuring. 8-10kg/ha for grain.

O 2-3 irrigation are required.
FERTILIZER APPLICATION:
O NPK= 00:12:00 kg/ha.
INNOCULATION:
O Specific Rhizobium inoculant is necessary in most
situations unless effectively nodulated crops have
ben grown previously.
WEEDING:
O One weeding may be required.
HARVESTING:
O For manuring after 40-60 days is incorporated in
soil.
