2. What are demonstrative adjectives
and pronouns?
Demonstrative adjectives (this, these, that, those) point out, or
demonstrate, a specific noun or pronoun.
“This” and “that” are used for singular nouns, pronouns or noun phrases.
“These” and “those” refer to plurals.
eg: This song is my favourite/ That pasta looks delicious
I like this one
I prefer that floppy red and white jumper.
These shoes are brand new/ Those books are excellent sources of
inspiration
3. What are demonstrative
adjectives and pronouns?
“This” and its plural version “these” refer to things more proximate to the
speaker. “That” and “those” refer to things less proximate to the speaker.
Picture standing in a shop, looking at watches. The appropriate use of
demonstrative adjectives, based on proximity, would be as follows: “Do you
prefer this watch, or that watch we looked at yesterday?” (the watch looked at
yesterday is less proximate to the speaker than the watch being looked at right
now).
4. What are demonstrative adjectives
and pronouns?
Demonstrative pronouns are the same as demonstrative adjectives (this, these,
that, those, and point out people or things), except that because they’re pronouns
they replace nouns previously mentioned.
eg: Which bike is yours?
This (bike) is. That (bike) is a racer.
eg: I need to buy some chocolates for my friend’s birthday.
These (chocolates) look delicious, but those (chocolates) look good too!
