Scope of Educational Psychology
Educational psychology is a science of education
which mainly deals with teaching and learning
and help the teacher to modify the learners
behaviour and bring all round development in
his personality. The scope of psychology is
cover the behaviour of living organisms and all
activities of his life. It includes all fields and
branches of psychology.
In educational psychology the scope of such
behavioral studies limited with teaching and
learning process. It includes:
• Who is being educated
• By whom is the learner to be taught
• What is to be taught
• How are the learning experiences to be provided
• When and where are the learning experiences to
be provided
Let us try to answer and clarify these questions.
Who is being educated
The individuality and personality of the learner
must known before behaviour modification.
The process and pattern of growth and
development during different stages of his life
His instincts, abilities, aptitude, intelligence,
attitudes and creativity also important
By whom is the learner to be taught
The role of teacher can never be minimized. He is
required to pay attention on the following
aspects:
• Personality traits and chracteristics of good
teacher
• Duties and responsibilities of good teacher
• Measures of doing and knowing away from his
own conflicts, anxiety and tension
• Teachers motivation, level of aspiration,
adjustment and mental health
What is to be taught
• It is decided to depending upon the needs and
wishes of society.
• Educational psychology helps to deciding the
suitable learning experiences, methods and
techniques for the children at each
developmental stage and also meeting their
specific individuality.
How are the learning experiences to
be provided
How should the child be given the learning
experiences. It includes:
• Nature, laws and theories of learning
• Remembering and forgetting
• Means of effective learning and memorization
• Transfer of learning
• Sensation and perception
• Concept formation
• Thinking, reasoning and problem solving
behaviour
When and where are the learning
experiences to be provided
Every place and every environment is not suitable for
teaching and learning. Educational psychology helps us
to create suitable place and situation for learning. It
involves:
• Classroom climate
• Institutional climate
• Individual, group and self study
• Factors affecting attention
• Role of reward and punishment
• Group behaviour
• Guidance and counseling
Education cannot be static and fix entity. It has to
be changed as the changing environment to meet
the challenges. So, educational psychology work
hard to keep involving new concepts, principles
and techniques. So, the scope of educational
psychology cannot be defined as limited, it opens
a number of ways in the field of education. The
scope may be considered extensive because it
gives the solution of problems and fulfill the
demands and solution and demands can never be
end.
