Meaning Of Guidance
Guidance in simple terms means to direct or provide assistance to
someone who needs help. In the broader perspective, guidance is
provided at all levels to human beings by one person or the other.
For instance, in a family, the head of the family may guide other
family members to act in a certain manner.
In other words guidance can help a person solve a personal,
vocational, educational or any other problem for which he is unable
to find a solution on his own. Thus guidance has emerged as both a
process and a concept.
Definition of Guidance
"Guidance involves personal help given by someone; it is
designed to assist the individual to decide where he wants to go,
what he wants to do and how best he can accomplish his purpose.“

Teacher as a Guidance Personal
In education system teacher is like a glittering and shining
sun who has a unique role in teaching and learning process.
The teacher has two main functions in guiding their students;
classroom guidance and vocational guidance.
As a classroom guide, the teacher should endeavor to
develop the best personal, social and educational qualities in each
student. As vocational guide the teachers have opportunities to
assist students with their occupational plans.
Role of Teacher In Guidance
• The teacher as a guidance worker should be able to identify
individual problem in his/her classroom and be able to treat these
problems with understanding.
• In helping the student, the teacher may collaborate with other
subject teachers. The teacher should study the test results,
achievements, aptitude, interests and temperament.
• The teacher should know the student’s plans for education and
his/her vocational goals.
Roles of Teachers (contd..)
• He/she should have an understanding of the students likes
and dislikes, problems and frustrations.
• The teacher can prevent maladjustments.
• The teacher who teaches academic subjects and teachers of
Physical Education, Yoga, etc. courses have opportunity to
gain close rapport with students.
Role of Teacher (contd..)
The teachers’ opportunities for guidance while teaching may
be summarized as comprising seven kinds of action.
1) Using personal relationships
2) Building self-esteem and competence
3) Individualizing instruction
4) Guiding daily learning
5) Sharing educational goals with students
6) Discussing common problems
7) Following up student needs
Essential qualities needed

Career/Vocational Guidance
Meaning of career guidance
This entails providing assistance to students so that they
can opt for the right vocation or career. Career guidance
help students to make decisions related to future career
plans. Vocation guidance also enables the students to adjust
to the vocational environment.
Definition of Career Guidance
“ Vocational guidance usually is interpreted as the assistance
given to the learner to choose, prepare for and progress in an
occupation. “

Role of Teacher in Career Guidance
• To help the students to get the right information about all
aspects of the career of their interest.
• To help students understand their own abilities and skills and
to help them fit these to their chosen career.
• To help students to develop attitude towards work.
• To teach students the importance of cooperation and its
necessary to adjust in a group with other co-workers.
• To help the students to become proficient in the vocation of
their choice.
• To assist students to critically analyze the various vocations
they can opt for to take the right decision.

Summary
Guidance means to direct or provide assistance to someone who needs
help. Guidance includes all type of education- formal, informal, vocational and
special. Because teachers have a significant role in students and school success,
planning on this precious capital will be logical and desirable. Success in not
accidental, but is the product of planning and effort in such a helpful and scientific
job. By using the past experience and the present science we visualize a better
future and don’t forget that civility and development of every society depends on
the number of its genteel teachers. Therefore, professional training of teachers to
gain sagacious and wise individuals will be necessary.
Although teachers are not consultants and advisors, they are
intimate to students and have the most influence on them. So, they should learn the
advisory skills and use it in teaching and solving students’ problems. They are not
consultants, but their role and function is so important that the success and failure
of contribution and activities. It is the fellowship, sympathy, and cooperation of
teacher, advisor, manager and assistant which can help us to achieve an efficient
and effective school charter.
