3. Pre-Production: Visual Planning
Because there isn't a lot of lyrics to work with its quite hard to establish strong links between
the words and the visuals. The song is kind of one big metaphor so I have tried my best to plan
a video that will clearly show my interpretation of the lyrics but they are still quite vague and
dot have any narratives that I could follow and include in the video.
VERSE 1
âTalking to the songbird yesterdayâ
âFlew me to a past not far awayâ
She's a little pirate in my mind
âSinging songs of love to pass the
timeâ
VERSE 2
âA man can never dream these kind of
thingsâ
âEspecially when she came and spread
her wingsâ
Whispered in my ear the things I'd like
âThen she flew away into the nightâ
Although there are some words
that I have picked out that I can try
and incorporate and use to
influence
certain shots:
so when reading the lyrics I looked through and tried to find any
actions that were described and I picked out talking, singing,
whispered and spread her wings.
These are things that I can incorporate into my video so I will try
and have shots of my character singing/dancing when the line
âsinging songs of love to pass the timeâ plays.
I will try an do the same with others too to add in more links
between the lyrics and the visuals.
I then picked out past, dream and night because they set the
scene almost, they describe the tone, mood, lighting.
âpastâ links to my idea of memories and reminiscing. And
âdreamâ links to it all feeling like a dream but also how its all in
the characters head, they are going beck through all their
thoughts and day dreaming almost. But I can also use âdreamâ to
make my shots more dream like and mystical, perhaps I edit
them after to be distorted or play on the boundaries of dreams
and reality . ânightâ gave me the idea to film some shots in the
dark and play around with different lighting and styles.
4. Jet2Holiday adverts
https://youtu.be/5wPKve-cZR4
The jet2holiday ads are filmed in a similar style to
how I imagine my video being filmed. They follow
similar themes especially the ad with the younger
couple. I really like how these all link together by
the hand holding, it almost helps with the
transitions but it makes the video really memorable.
One of the key things that makes this advert so
memorable and strong is the links between the
visuals and the song. The song on each ad is âhold
my handâ by jess glynn and in each ad itâs the same
theme, one person holding the camera mans hand
and guiding them around. Its always filmed from
the exact same angle but often with different
character whether its family or a couple its still the
same layout which makes it really effective.

This is a plan for my video using experiments shots I took of Adam.
My final video will be much better, with more detailed editing, transitions and
better film quality.
My shots will also be planned so the footage will be overall better.
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or influenced your video

7. Structural breakdown
SONGBIRD LYRICS
Talking to the songbird yesterday
Flew me to a past not far away
She's a little pirate in my mind
Singing songs of love to pass the time
Gonna write a song so she can see
Give her all the love she gives to me
Talk of better days that have yet to come
Never felt this love from anyone
She's not anyone
She's not anyone
She's not anyone
A man can never dream these kind of
things
Especially when she came and spread her
wings
Whispered in my ear the things I'd like
Then she flew away into the night
Gonna write a song so she can see
Give her all the love she gives to me
Talk of better days that have yet to come
Never felt this love from anyone
She's not anyone
She's not anyone
She's not anyone
Although my video doesnât have a
linear narrative I think I will set the
video so that its filmed throughout
one day and goes from noon to
evening in chronological order.
The song doesnât really follow a
story and is split into three
sections and is repeated twice
with about 40 seconds of
instrumental at the end.

Maybe of her dancing in slow motion? Something different to the other shots so
it stands out but not so much that it breaks the theme

10. https://www.storyboardthat.com
I really struggled with the storyboards as I had so many different ideas.
Because I donât follow a narrative and I'm putting together lots of short 5
second shots its was really difficult to make a story board but I gave it a go
and tried it out. I think also as most of my shots will be of details like facial
expressions and small movements which are hard to represent in these
story boards and I feel like it would of become very repetitive.
It was helpful in getting me to really think through each shot but I wouldn't
of had time to make an entire story board for my whole video. I feel like
even though I have only done a little bit of storyboarding, it still shows that
I know how to create a storyboard and understand how they are import
when visualizing and planning your ideas.
11. Shot List
⢠For my shot list I used my shooting
schedule and my structural breakdown
instead of writing out individual shots
because I kind of merged them
together and felt they were more
detailed and gave me a better idea of
what I wanted to film.
16. Location information
Fossgate social
Knavesmire woods town
York walls
Scarcroft park Spark York
By the river Millennium bridge
All my locations are in York and within walking
distance which makes them accessible and easy to
film in. Also, because most my places are outside
public areas I donât need to worry about filming
permissions, although this does mean if the weather
is terrible I will struggle to film. If this happens, we
will film what we can depending on the weather that
day and then focus more on shots taken in cafes
(fossgate social, spark) then try and get more shots
later on in the week when the weather is better.
I chose to film earlier in the week to give myself time
incase of bad weather or if I need more shots.
Me and my actor both live in York and every location
is at walking distance allowing us to be more flexible
when filming, especially as there is only me and her
not a full cast of people.
