3. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
4. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Slowthai – Doorman – Many close up shots, stop motion effect, camera
filters adding warps, lots of blurs, generally shaky camera, lots of
downwards shots.
Skepta – Bullet from a gun – One shot the whole video, everything is
timelapsed apart from the background, blurred effects.
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
5. SLOWTHAI - DOORMAN
There are multiple close-up shots of the artists face throughout the
video, and many others faces and objects but predominantly the
artists, they added a stop motion effect to the video witch makes it
interesting to watch, they used multiple filters and effects to add a
warped effect to the faces and body's of the people in the video, the
camerawork is deliberately shaky throughout the video and sometimes
blurry, this again makes the video a lot more interesting to watch, lots
of downwards shots throughout the whole video.
I think I would take the shaky and blurry camera aspect of this video
and use it in my own video because it adds a good looking effect into
the video and it doesn't need any editing to make it look like that.
6. SKEPTA – BULLET FROM
A GUN
The whole video is just the same shot but the people
change throughout the video. The foreground changes
between a time-lapse of people walking and slow mo. of
people talking, whilst in the background it I in real time
and does not move faster or slower with the foreground.
I think I would use this technique in my video because its
visually interesting although hard to do.
10. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track /Artists: Glass Alice.
Biography of artist: Calvin Cawood was born in Ecuador in 2003 and
moved to Shipley, West Yorkshire in 2004. After getting experiencing
hardships growing up in an underprivileged area of the UK he turned to
music to express his views and relive anxiety's. Through high school he
met Charlie Watson, an electronic music producer and they began
frequent collaboration, they released their debut track Demons but it
was met with a dull response After years of trying they decided to
form an indie rock band with 2 other people, but personal
disagreements eventually led to the group splitting up and Cawood and
Watson forming the alternative Hip Hop/R&B collective Glass Alice,
releasing their debut instrumental album, Candle Light, which was met
with a more positive response than their previous tracks.
Links to other artists: Moses Frater, Testiment, Charlie Harrison, Corrine
Bailey Rae.
Genre: Electronic R&B, Hip Hop, Lo-fi.
11. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The meaning of the song and the video have a close
relationship because the song basically narrate the video and
will be easy to follow. The content of the video will also have a
close relation to the song with many of the lyrics being related
to events that happen in the video.
The duration of the song compared to the video will make the
song shorter than the video because with the video being in a
short film style, the song wont start until 40/50 seconds in, the
pace of the song will be quite slow and relaxed
12. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
The idea for the music video is to tell a story throughout,
the song used would have a heavy relation to the story
being told throughout the video. These styles of video
are becoming increasingly popular, with the most recent
one being Dizzie Rascals Bop and Keep it Dipping.
Personally I find these types of videos a lot more
interesting to someone just lip-syncing their song.
14. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
15. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
16. LOCATIONS
Locations
Lindisfarne, Leeds
Bradford Airport, High
Winsley Farm, Leeds
Risks
There are a few risks
with filming at
Lindisfarne, obviously
because there is a risk
of becoming trapped
on the causeway and
the risk of open water,
this should be an issue
though. Transport
should also not be an
issue because all the
locations are relatively
close together.
19. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
21. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
22. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
23. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
24. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
She never meant to run away from the drug man
She and the drug man were in love fam
It was good getting fucked being fucked up
Nothing better than a good gram from the good man
Yeah its wavy off this bud
And I'm starting to curl up
I just want more, not enough (x3)
Maybe we should start a band
And make more money for this stuff
So we did and at gigs we tried to bluff being fucked up
We know the longer for we did it
The longer it would hurt
Run away from our problems, to the barrel of a gun
Just like Kurt, go to work, earn a living, do not shirk
Scenes 1-3
Getting into the car,
having a conversation,
arriving at the barn
Scenes 4-6
Taking the bags from the
barn, running out and
getting into the car, then
driving away
25. She never meant to run away from the drug man
She and the drug man were in love fam
It was good getting fucked being fucked up
Nothing better than a good gram from the good man
Yeah its wavy off this bud
And I'm starting to curl up
I just want more, not enough (x3)
We moved out, bought a house
Had no idea what was about
What were doing, only screwing
Problem is, he turned forty in a week
Down the street, in the four walls
We knew she’d meet her downfall
She’d ring him up and he would yell
On the top of the stairs where she fell
To high to realize, the same glassy eyes
The same childish lies, too sick to stay and see her cry
Scenes 7-9
Arriving at the airport,
getting on the plane
and leaving the
country, arriving at the
airport.
Scenes 10-13
Arriving at the bus
stop, catching the
bus, then getting
dropped off at the
last bus stop
26. Yeah there's bruises on her face
She's staring into space
Her heads turned into waste
Too much time spent in this place
Such a deathly fall from grace
She never meant to run away from the drug man
She and the drug man were in love fam
It was too fucked up getting fucked up
Nothing worse than a good gram from the bad man
Yeah she's dying from his goods
And she's starting to curl up
I don’t want no more, its too much(Whole chorus x3)
Scenes 14-17
Bad people catch up as they find a boat, they
travel across the bay, bad people kill boat man
Scene 18
Get caught up on the
pier by the bad people,
dramatic tension
through the whole
scene
31. LOCATION INFORMATION
Lindesfarne – The causeway is flooded twice a day for a couple
of hours, which means that filming will either have to take all
day, or during a short window of time. There may also be some
small problems with filming during some hours due to it being a
holy island and peoples religious beliefs. There is also a small
risk of water damage to equipment
Leeds Bradford Airport – There will probably be some security
issues with the filming in an airport as there is generally security
issues with filming in airports but this shouldn’t be an issue.
Harrogate – Filming at the bus station should be relatively easy
because there is no specific obstacles or challenges that need to
be faced like the airport but there is a possible risk of damage
to equipment due to the amount of people walking up and down
inside, there s also the issue of people not wanting to be filmed
but I doubt that problem will be a large issue.
High Winsley Farm – There is no issues I can see effecting the
recording here apart from filming in the car, and driving the car,
but these issues will be addressed in the risk assessment
33. RISK ASSESSMENT
There are many risks we will come across during filming,
especially around Lindesfarne due to the obvious large
amounts of water which could lead to equipment being
damaged, all these risks though can be avoided by
simply being sensible around the water. Another risk
around Lindesfarne is getting caught out in the tide
when on the beach but again this problem can be solved
by being aware of the risks around this and reading the
times for the tides
35. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
36. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Technical, Regular backups of footage, make sure we
have a backup camera.
Location, Plan a backup location in case of extreme
weather or being unable to get there.
Personnel, I will make sure I have backup actors
Organisational,
