i. As per DM Code of Construction Practice, Section 3.9 requirements
minimum light levels to work areas, offices, ramps, underground areas,
shafts and risers are as follows:
 Construction areas - 50 lux;
 Offices – 400 lux;
 Excavations - 35 lux;
 Tunnels, shafts, risers and underground work areas - 100 lux;
 Warehouses and carpenter shops 100 - lux;
ii. No work shall be undertaken in areas of insufficient light levels,
supervision shall ensure lighting is adequate before commencing work;
iii. Lighting shall be situated so as to prevent workers from being dazzled
when working or moving around the area;
iv. Every area shall receive light from at least two directions to avoid deep
shadows;
v. Lighting shall be mounted as high as practical to provide as wide a spread
of light as possible;
vi. Special consideration given to shafts and risers to ensure adequate
spread of light levels;
