Employees tasked with using hazardous materials must be instructed by
supervision in the following at a minimum:
i. Never use smell, taste or touch as means for material identification;
ii. Always ensure adequate ventilation or extraction in areas where
hazardous fumes can build up, such as glues, cleaners, additives,
sealers, paints, coatings etc.;
iii. Refrain from any practice that is hazardous or incompatible with the
hazardous materials, e.g. welding or use of lighters in areas where
flammable materials are stored;
iv. Avoid mixing of unknown or incompatible materials;
v. Always use compatible and appropriately identified portable containers
for transporting even small quantities of hazardous materials;
vi. NEVER use water or drink bottles or other unmarked containers for
storing chemicals;
vii. Clean, decontaminate or dispose of any used PPE after use;
viii. Always wash hands after handling chemicals before eating or smoking,
to prevent ingestion;
ix. Observe all precautions stated in safety data sheets of the relevant
materials;
x. Never wash out chemical or paint containers allowing wash off to enter
ground or waterways;
xi. Dispose of used containers or contaminated PPE into designated skips
for removal by licensed contractors, do not leave in work areas;
