i. HLG Workplaces storing hazardous substances/chemicals, using
hazardous materials and/or generating hazardous waste shall have a
hazardous materials management system;
ii. A plan of the store showing locations of the hazardous materials / wastes
stored shall be available, with suitable warning signage clearly displayed
in multi-language inside and outside;
iii. Smoking prohibited in and around chemical stores, clear prohibition
signage to be displayed;
iv. Location of emergency spill kits and fire-fighting equipment, and access
and escape routes shall be displayed. These shall be checked routinely
with records kept for review;
v. Appropriate storage compatibility risk assessments undertaken and
MSDS available for review. The assessment / MSDS shall cover all
activities, products and services to identify all hazardous materials that
are present, stored or being handled at the worksite and the risks
associated with them;
vi. MSDS records shall be indexed to allow fast access to emergency
treatment if required, available for review;
vii. All substances and chemicals clearly marked and segregated;
viii. Limitations on quantities of the materials / wastes stored shall be adhered
to as per MSDS and site requirements;
ix. Storage conditions implemented, including adequate ventilation and
extraction in stores. Stores to be locked to prevent unauthorized removal
of contents, with signage indicating key holders;
x. Only enough hazardous substance sufficient for the shift shall be issued
to workers, to prevent uncontrolled storage in work areas. Workers
instructed to return unused chemicals to the stores;

 Use of Substances
potentially hazardous
to worker health or
the environment;
 Possible inhalation, accidental
ingestion or absorption of hazardous
fumes, vapor and substances
hazardous to health due to lack of
information issued;
 Inadequate cooling and ventilation
through use resulting in ill health or

Employees tasked with using hazardous materials must be instructed by
supervision in the following at a minimum:
i. Never use smell, taste or touch as means for material identification;
ii. Always ensure adequate ventilation or extraction in areas where
hazardous fumes can build up, such as glues, cleaners, additives,
sealers, paints, coatings etc.;
iii. Refrain from any practice that is hazardous or incompatible with the
hazardous materials, e.g. welding or use of lighters in areas where
flammable materials are stored;
iv. Avoid mixing of unknown or incompatible materials;
v. Always use compatible and appropriately identified portable containers
for transporting even small quantities of hazardous materials;
vi. NEVER use water or drink bottles or other unmarked containers for
storing chemicals;
vii. Clean, decontaminate or dispose of any used PPE after use;
viii. Always wash hands after handling chemicals before eating or smoking,
to prevent ingestion;
ix. Observe all precautions stated in safety data sheets of the relevant
materials;
x. Never wash out chemical or paint containers allowing wash off to enter
ground or waterways;
xi. Dispose of used containers or contaminated PPE into designated skips
for removal by licensed contractors, do not leave in work areas;

contaminated materials;
v. Types and numbers of fire extinguishers, sprinklers, fire hose reels, fire
hydrants, fire pumps and other control measures, inspection and
surveillance requirements;
vi. Reporting protocol for incidents during transport hazardous materials &

Store operatives to ensure a Hazard Data Sheet is supplied ideally prior to substance delivery, if not supplied when delivered to site; Documentation unavailable for review Substance quarantined until evidence provided Low 2 Storage  Storage of Substance potentially hazardous to worker health or to the environment;  Possible inhalation, absorption of hazardous fumes, vapor and substances hazardous to health;  Build-up of flammable vapor in confined area;  Fire;  Inadequate cooling and ventilation of storage resulting in ill health or combustion;  Inadequate signage and substance identification;  Poor controls over distribution of substances/chemicals;  Excessive quantities issued to work areas; 3 4 12 HIGH i. HLG Workplaces storing hazardous substances/chemicals, using hazardous materials and/or generating hazardous waste shall have a hazardous materials management system; ii. A plan of the store showing locations of the hazardous materials / wastes stored shall be available, with suitable warning signage clearly displayed in multi-language inside and outside; iii. Smoking prohibited in and around chemical stores, clear prohibition signage to be displayed; iv. Location of emergency spill kits and fire-fighting equipment, and access and escape routes shall be displayed. These shall be checked routinely with records kept for review; v. Appropriate storage compatibility risk assessments undertaken and MSDS available for review. The assessment / MSDS shall cover all activities, products and services to identify all hazardous materials that are present, stored or being handled at the worksite and the risks associated with them; vi. MSDS records shall be indexed to allow fast access to emergency treatment if required, available for review; vii. All substances and chemicals clearly marked and segregated; viii. Limitations on quantities of the materials / wastes stored shall be adhered to as per MSDS and site requirements; ix. Storage conditions implemented, including adequate ventilation and extraction in stores. Stores to be locked to prevent unauthorized removal of contents, with signage indicating key holders; x. Only enough hazardous substance sufficient for the shift shall be issued to workers, to prevent uncontrolled storage in work areas. Workers instructed to return unused chemicals to the stores; xi.
