2. Audience Profile
• This game will be made available to middle-class boys and girls who are currently in
their mid-to-late teens or, to put in layman’s terms, 14-19 years of age. However,
sincee classic 8-bit games such as Super Mario are known to be particularly popular
with millennials, according to modern statistics, I intend to include them as a
secondary but nonetheless important audience, giving them the opportunity to once
more feel the sense of nostalgia they felt when playing on a SNES, Game Boy or Sega
Megadrive, during their childhood years. This game will also be an opportunity to
introduce teenagers, who have had no experience with playing games of any kind,
save for board or quiz games, to the world of computer games and, in so doing, give
them the chance to experience how games were originally made before making the
transition to 3D in the late 1990s.
• Additionally, for fans of archaeology and/or adventure games such as Monkey Island,
this game will allow them to interact with certain objects in their environment. Most
of them may not be needed, however, there will be some that will be required to be
use in order to progress the game further. For instance, the entrance to the temple
could be dark so a torch will be needed in order for the player to see where they are
going. To provide a sense of isolation, the player will only be allowed to use wooden
torches, which will flicker out after a certain period of time, requiring the player to
use another nearby torch before that happens.

6. Sound Effects/Dialogue
Sound Effects
Alarm – This sound effect will be repeated on a loop at least three or four times with the words “ESCAPE!” flashing repeatedly, reminding the player that
the temple is about to collapse in on itself. This sound effect could be created via BeepBox, using a singular synthesised high-pitch note.
Jumping – In order to create the sound of my character jumping from one side of the temple to another, I plan to create at least three variations of the
same effect depending on the speed the character has been running at i.e. the character will jump into the air with an accompanying high-pitched noise
which will, if the player has broken into a running jump beforehand and has gathered enough momentum to make a safe landing, be followed by a slightly
low-pitched sound indicating that he or she has narrowly succeeded on reaching the other side of the room. If, however, the character’s speed is too slow,
they will land on a series of spikes, which will be accompanied by a very low sound, resulting in the player losing their lives completely.
Music – While I am not accustomed to writing for music for any project, having previously relied on royalty free music from YouTube and other websites, I
will attempt to create a piece of music that is relevant to the genre I have chosen to base my game around. Since the game is ultimately based around the
adventure genre, I will therefore strive to create a piece of music that is exciting and heart-pounding, without being too overly dramatic, with some
elements deliberately reminiscent of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Triumphant music will be played once you have completed a level, but
quiet almost somber music will play if you fail to complete a level in the allotted time given.
Interactive objects – Throughout the game, the lead character will have the opportunity to interact with almost any object that he or she comes into contact
with. Picking up the correct object, such as a torch, will set off a positive sound which will result in your points going up, the result of which will be revealed
at the end of the level. However, picking up an incorrect object will result in your points being deducted with a sound acting as a mixture between high and
low being played out. These objects can take the form of anything, such as vines (if not gripped properly), spiders (namely the tarantula variant), and
overhanging stalactites.
Feet – Although it is a particularly difficult thing to animate, especially as I have not had the available resources necessary to do so, I plan to
use BeepBox to create the sound of feet moving as the character progress from the location to another. The speed at which the sound is played
will be dependent entirely on how fast or slow the character is moving during certain situations i.e. when navigating through the overgrowth of
the jungle, one high-pitched and one low-pitched sound effect will be heard to give the impression of walking. However, when attempting to
leave the temple following the start of its collapse, one or multiple sound effects will be heard to create the illusion of running.
7. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Although I will have done everything to the best of my ability to
ensure that all documents are saved and shut down when ejecting
my USB stick from the computer, there is a small but likely possibility
I will have forgotten to close at least one document/presentation
down, leaving me unable to eject the disc out.
If a pop-menu appears informing you that the hard-drive cannot be
removed, press the “OK” to button close it. Following this, close the
remaining document down, go onto Finder, press “File” and select the
“eject Kingston” option from the drop-down menu. Once this is done, you
will then be free to safely remove the stick from its USB port.
While I feel I have plenty of experience in animating characters
carefully and methodically, be it as an 8-bit sprite or a clay figurine,
there is a serious possibility that, as I focus on animating both the
character and his/her surrounding environment with them,
movements out of synchronisation with the sound effects and/or
music in the game could suddenly crop up.
If absolutely necessary, check the audio track in Adobe Photoshop or
possibly Adobe Premier Pro for any potential oddities in sound. Should
these arise, simply move the audio bar to the visual frame you want it to
be played across. As a precaution, you can always animate the character
to ensure their movements work in perfect conjunction with the audio.
Since I will be developing my finished game on Adobe Photoshop to
later be edited, time permitting, on Adobe Premier Pro, it is likely,
given the size of my USB stick’s current intake of data plus the limited
disc space on a Mac (depending on the version installed), that the
large file size of both Adobe software will not allow it to be saved.
If need be, remove any documents from your USB stick that you feel may
be taking up space, such as Photoshop or Premier Pro documents and
attempt to save the document again. If this does not work, check the rest
of your drive for any unnecessary documents still attached or find a
different hard-drive that can handle the size to save it on to.
Despite my certainty that my finished product will turn out relatively
well, I still harbour concerns that certain elements, namely the
environments displaying the temple the lead character walks into,
may wind up not being in the line with the 1980s visual pixelated
look I had originally envisioned during the initial stages of
development on this project.
To ensure that your drawings and designs are of the best quality possible,
it is advisable to, but only if you have time, draw a rough outline of how
you want certain aspects to appear on paper. Following this, you can send
an email of the finished drawings to yourself by logging into one of the
printers in college and scan the document thoroughly. Alternatively, a
rough sketch on Photoshop could be done.
While I do not except this problem to arise at any point whatsoever
during production of my game, there is a still small but ever-present
likelihood that Photoshop could suddenly freeze, causing me to lose
track of my progress and, by extension, potentially lose the work that
I have done thus far.
To avoid losing any work that you have to up to the point that you have
reached, it is strongly recommended and advised that you save your work
at regular intervals. This will ensure that any work that has been done,
whether anything has been added to altered or simply left unchanged,
can be easily recovered.
Even though I will strive to take considerable care in setting up the
difficulty factor for this game, there will undoubtedly by a number of
gamers who feel that I have made the game too challenging, despite
my intentions for it to be both fun and puzzling simultaneously.
To ensure that every gamer’s experience with this product is both
entertaining and thought-provoking, I plan to set up a menu in which any
player of any gender can choose any level of difficulty that they so desire,
ranging from easy to hard. I will also give them the opportunity to choose
their own character skins, provided it fits within the game’s allotted
genre.
8. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided?
Although precautions will have undoubtedly been taken to avoid the possibility
of this scenario ever happening, there may be a group of stray computer wires
left unaccounted for which, if not attended to as soon as possible, could result
in a potential trip hazard to students and teachers alike. While any injuries
sustained would most likely be minor, this possibility must be taken seriously.
In order to prevent such a potential hazard from ever occurring, it is strongly
recommended that the wires are positioned directly against the wall underneath
your computer station so that anyone planning to use it after you does not get
their feet caught. If you are unsure of what to do, inform a member of staff and
the problem will be dealt with accordingly.
If you find that the position of your chair has been altered, which will have been
done for legitimate reasons similar to your own such as back problems, and you
fail to alter the height of the chair accordingly to suit your needs, it could result
in you experiencing an exacerbated state of discomfort. Additional contributing
factors to back pain symptoms could potentially take the form of flank pains,
where a person will experience considerable difficulty in the simple task of rising
from their seat.
To ensure that the onset of back pains, having experienced them myself in
previous years, does not become problematic, I would strongly advise adjusting
the height and depth of your chair to ensure that your back is provided with
whatever support it requires, thereby giving you as much comfort as you need to
alleviate the pain. Use the mechanism (if one is installed in the chair) to fulfil this
purpose. If, however, you are in far too much pain to do this, inform your tutor
immediately.
If you are working on a project and have been set a certain deadline by which to
have it completed and submitted and the pressure of said deadline begins to
make you feel overwhelmed and that you might not be able to meet it on time,
it could give rise to feelings of unneeded stress or agitation, which could
threaten to set you back even further in your work
If you feel you are unable to concentrate and need some time alone with your
thoughts as well as to calm down, ask your tutor for permission to leave the
classroom for a few moments. To ensure that you have plenty of time to do this, I
would strongly recommend going to the Oasis centre on the third floor as it not
only serves as a place of tranquillity, but of reflection also.
While the majority of students around the college are intelligent enough to
know not to bring food and drink into their classroom, there is a small but ever-
present chance that one of them could bring said items into the classroom,
which could cause a number of electrical hazards that would eventually lead to
the computer becoming unsuitable for use, such as residue from a Coca Cola
can sticking to the keyboards.
You will still be allowed to buy food and drink from vending machines anywhere at
the college, provided that they remain in your backpack throughout the duration
of the lesson you are in, otherwise this could result in your items being
confiscated. To avoid this, wait until break or lunch has been announced as this will
signify the end of the lesson. If, however, you have brought only water, then a
small exception can be made on condition you drink small segments of it.
If you are working at a computer and you begin to experience tiredness and
fatigue, it could potentially have come about as a result of irritation in the eyes
which could in turn, If you do nothing to combat these symptoms within the first
few minutes of experiencing them, they could easily result in other tiredness
symptoms, such as headaches, taking effect.
In order to bypass this problem altogether and avoid these symptoms taking effect
in any shape or form, the best solution available, as with the majority of work-
related problems, is to avert your eyes from the screen for as long as you feel you
require and focus on something else, such as writing a short story or thinking
about potential ideas for your FMP, for approximately four to five minutes.
While this example is only a minor issue at best that could easily be resolved,
the scenario of having a keyboard too close to your arms while you are typing
still remains pertinent, as it could cause Repetitive Strain Injury to kick in, with
fingers, wrists and arms rapidly becoming the worst affected area or areas of
the human body because of this.
To ensure that Repetitive Strain Injury does not worsen, as you could already be
experiencing the early stages of it during development of your project (be it pre-
production or evaluation), you must be prepared to consider various solutions:
One, which would come in particularly useful, is acquiring wrist supports that will
allow you to continue work without fear of enduring further unintended self-harm.
