Pre-Production
Oliver Keppie
Pre-production• What are you making? I am going to create a game which will also have a cut-scene as this will be
the part I try to make look the best and spend most of the available time on. My game will be a
cartoon, fighting multiplayer game and it will consist of three different types of art style.
• Why? The reason I chose to create a game over anything else is because I wanted to focus my final
piece on animation and I thought that a game would be the best way for me to incorporate
animation into my work. It also allowed me to try a range of styles and techniques whereas an
animated short film would have to all be one style throughout. I picked this over film, print and the
others because although I enjoyed them, I really wanted more practice in this area to get me
prepared for my second year as I want to focus more on animation. I am hoping to do animation
when I leave college and I think the earlier I start the better. I also find it fun and challenging and I
can still learn more but I am good at it so should get a good grade for the second year.
• Who is it for? My game is for any gender (most likely more males as the ratio for this type of game is
3:1) who are around the ages 12-19 although I will keep in mind that people older and younger may
like to play it. I will be aiming for people who live around and in USA, China, the UK, Japan, France
and Germany as this is where most people play games. I will be aiming it for people who don’t earn
lots of money so the game will be cheap but it will include in game purchases as the kids parents or
if they have a job, may be able to buy things in the game if they enjoy it.
• Where will it appear/on what? It will appear on all Pc, Xbox, PS4 and Nintendo Switch to broaden
the audience types and ages I can get playing my game. It will also increase the overall sales. I am
going to try create some game advertising posters and some of the box art for the game. I will also
try to create an advert if I have any spare time but I am not sure if I will create this.

Schedule
Fonts
Caveman Regular: I have chosen this font to use for the opening shots of the cave
scene as I am going to have a title card for each area. I think this font represents a cave
quite well and it will fit the music choice I am going to pick for this part.
JELLY CRAZIES: This font is going to be used for the main font on the title section of
the game and possibly for the loading screen because I believe it looks quite cartoony
and it suits the style of the game.
Karate: I have chosen this font for the warehouse scene which takes place in Japan. It is
quite a stereotypical font but it can clearly be identified as a Japanese style font.
Petite France: I have picked this font for the France scene because I think it looks very
clean and I think it slightly resembles a French theme.
Spy agency: I have chosen this font for the scenes where it has to introduce the spy
base as I think it looks very slick and spy like. I think this font could work really well if the
letters appear 1 by 1.
DIN Alternate: I think I will be using this font for the subtitles as it is clear and easy to
read. I also think that it looks suitable for a game and it will act well for its roll.
Storyboard
Storyboard Explanation
Box 1: Has the Kep.Co letters falling down and bounding a little big with a jelly sound effect over it.
Box 2: Has three little ball creatures based on Felix Colgraves style which bounce over and under one another whilst the loading text is
there and the title music plays which is piano jazz Charleston.
Box 3: Land marks on hills sliding from on screen to off screen with a light breeze sound effect playing.
Box 4: Title enlarges and appears and face pops out of left corner with a fist flying towards it in slow motion with the slow motion sound
effect.
Box 5: The screen all swipes up and the new one swipes up to appear. The fist fly's from the left top to bottom and then right bottom to
top. The tutorial is selected.
Box 6: There will be a looping funning jumping and kicking animation with instructions of what button to press underneath with text.
There will be a play button in the top right which is clicked.
Box 7: The cats mouth will move and their will be accent marks which come off the phone when the voice speaks. There will be a forklift
moving crates in the background. Sub Pub music and the warehouse ambience play.
Box 8: Monkey will be sat on a chair at a desk with a laptop which will flicker lights on his face as the audio from the last scene plays. He
will then talk and move his mouth. The Agent music plays.
Box 9: Monkey tells bee the plan with moth there mouths moving and some hand actions at the bottom of the screen. The Agent music
plays.
Box 10: Bee calls the other lair and his moth and antennas move. The Agent music plays.
Box 11: The ice on the tank with dog in starts to crack which an ice sound effect and there is some smoke coming in from the sides of the
screen with a gas sound effect. Zooms in to close up on his face and then mouth moves slightly as he talks. Protector 101 and future lab
ambience play.
Box 12: Fades to and from black and its dogs face with a slightly moving ear as a voice speaks. When dog talks his mouth will move.
Ancient music and cave drip play.
Box 13: The bear falls down on screen and floor cracks with a ground smashing sound effect and a grizzly bear growl. Ancient music and
cave drip play.
Box 14: Cuts to bear title card as the background flashed and the bear text bounces to the new swing time music. There will also be a
bear roar and a lightning crash sound effect.
Box 15: The screen slides with a whoosh sound effect to a screen with a bouncing vs and the lightening moving and glowing. Swing time
and the lightning sounds still play.
Box 16: The dogs title cars appears after the screen swipes again with whoosh sound effect. The name bounces to the music as the
lightning and swing time still play. Fades to black.
Box 17: Screen fades from black and the word fight appear in an explosion as the swing time gets more upbeat. The gameplay then begins
to the music.

Color Scheme
I really like this color scheme and I think it would work really well for the title and loading screen
of the game. The reason I think this is because it reminds me of the work don’t by Felix Colgrave
as he uses a lot of pale or muted greens and blues and it is his style which I am trying to follow
for the opening section of my game.
I think this color scheme would be good for the cave level of my game as I think there are a lot
of nice shades of pinky grey and although I may need some more grey it will work for the
shadows and the blossom trees etc.
This color scheme will be good for my actual game as there is a few browns which are very
popular in the 1930s cartoons and still some greens in there which are muted enough to look
quite vintage. I think to improve this color scheme I will look into finding some more blues and
maybe oranges which could be used for skin and clothes but after that it should be good.
CharactersCat: The reason that I
chose this color scheme
for the cat is because
the orange shows a flair
of anger or frustration
and the blue shows his
cold nature and link to
fish. He is the main
villain in my cut-scene
and I think that can be
guessed by the way that
his eyes are the other
way and how he will
snarl his teeth and
crunch his eyebrows as
he speaks when I
animate him. I think his
voice will need to be
deep but not like a
monsters voice just a
deep male voice.
Bee: The reason I have
chosen this color scheme is
because he is a bee so it had
to be black and yellow but I
have chosen the brown
because I think it resembles
a friendly and trustworthy
character. I think for his
voice it would be just a
regular male voice nothing
else needed as he is quite a
simple character. When I
animate him he plays quite
a serious roll but I could still
use over the top cartoony
expressions to make it fit
the style.
Monkey: The reason I
picked this color scheme
is because I think the
bright colors show off a
more jolly personality.
Also the color green
shows that he is a stable
and prosperous
character. The reason I
chose his body to be
black is because that’s
what color chimps are
and his face is just a
lighter tone as it would
be naturally. His voice
will be a slightly higher
more jolly tone as if this
were a movie he would
be the comical release
character.
Bear: The reason I picked these
colors is because the bears fur is
brown and I chose the dark
mossy green because it shows
that bears live in the wilderness
and it fits the dark damp theme
of the cave he lives in. I think his
voice will be deep but not scary
like the cats as the bear is not a
bad guy but the strongest soldier
on the good team. His animation
style will be used to make him
seem scary and ready to fight.
Dog: The reason I wanted the dog
to be all dark brown and have no
clothes is because it stands out
from all of the other characters. I
think in my actual game I will
change the color to a light blonde
so you can see the limbs more and
it looks better animated. The voice
will be a very scared voice which is
done by a girl or someone with a
high voice but it will still be a male
character. The animation style will
be done to make him look
cowardly and lanky so limbs will be
flying around and he will seem like
a clumsy character.

Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Work being lost due to computer corruption. Saving all of my work onto a memory stick.
Work being lost because computer shuts down. Save the work every time I complete a task or
every 15 mins.
Work being lost due to loosing it. Keeping my files organised and labelled clearly
so work is easy to save and find.
Health and Safety
There will be no potential health and safety issues because the classroom is already risk assessed
and somebody checks to see if it is still safe every morning.
Resources
Equipment/ Props/ Costume needed Locations needed
Recording device to record voice and some
fighting sound effects.
A quiet room which may be be better
soundproof due to some of the dialogue having
to be shouted.

4. pre production(1)

  • 2. Pre-production• What are you making? I am going to create a game which will also have a cut-scene as this will be the part I try to make look the best and spend most of the available time on. My game will be a cartoon, fighting multiplayer game and it will consist of three different types of art style. • Why? The reason I chose to create a game over anything else is because I wanted to focus my final piece on animation and I thought that a game would be the best way for me to incorporate animation into my work. It also allowed me to try a range of styles and techniques whereas an animated short film would have to all be one style throughout. I picked this over film, print and the others because although I enjoyed them, I really wanted more practice in this area to get me prepared for my second year as I want to focus more on animation. I am hoping to do animation when I leave college and I think the earlier I start the better. I also find it fun and challenging and I can still learn more but I am good at it so should get a good grade for the second year. • Who is it for? My game is for any gender (most likely more males as the ratio for this type of game is 3:1) who are around the ages 12-19 although I will keep in mind that people older and younger may like to play it. I will be aiming for people who live around and in USA, China, the UK, Japan, France and Germany as this is where most people play games. I will be aiming it for people who don’t earn lots of money so the game will be cheap but it will include in game purchases as the kids parents or if they have a job, may be able to buy things in the game if they enjoy it. • Where will it appear/on what? It will appear on all Pc, Xbox, PS4 and Nintendo Switch to broaden the audience types and ages I can get playing my game. It will also increase the overall sales. I am going to try create some game advertising posters and some of the box art for the game. I will also try to create an advert if I have any spare time but I am not sure if I will create this. Reflection:

  • 4. Fonts Caveman Regular: I have chosen this font to use for the opening shots of the cave scene as I am going to have a title card for each area. I think this font represents a cave quite well and it will fit the music choice I am going to pick for this part. JELLY CRAZIES: This font is going to be used for the main font on the title section of the game and possibly for the loading screen because I believe it looks quite cartoony and it suits the style of the game. Karate: I have chosen this font for the warehouse scene which takes place in Japan. It is quite a stereotypical font but it can clearly be identified as a Japanese style font. Petite France: I have picked this font for the France scene because I think it looks very clean and I think it slightly resembles a French theme. Spy agency: I have chosen this font for the scenes where it has to introduce the spy base as I think it looks very slick and spy like. I think this font could work really well if the letters appear 1 by 1. DIN Alternate: I think I will be using this font for the subtitles as it is clear and easy to read. I also think that it looks suitable for a game and it will act well for its roll.
  • 6. Storyboard Explanation Box 1: Has the Kep.Co letters falling down and bounding a little big with a jelly sound effect over it. Box 2: Has three little ball creatures based on Felix Colgraves style which bounce over and under one another whilst the loading text is there and the title music plays which is piano jazz Charleston. Box 3: Land marks on hills sliding from on screen to off screen with a light breeze sound effect playing. Box 4: Title enlarges and appears and face pops out of left corner with a fist flying towards it in slow motion with the slow motion sound effect. Box 5: The screen all swipes up and the new one swipes up to appear. The fist fly's from the left top to bottom and then right bottom to top. The tutorial is selected. Box 6: There will be a looping funning jumping and kicking animation with instructions of what button to press underneath with text. There will be a play button in the top right which is clicked. Box 7: The cats mouth will move and their will be accent marks which come off the phone when the voice speaks. There will be a forklift moving crates in the background. Sub Pub music and the warehouse ambience play. Box 8: Monkey will be sat on a chair at a desk with a laptop which will flicker lights on his face as the audio from the last scene plays. He will then talk and move his mouth. The Agent music plays. Box 9: Monkey tells bee the plan with moth there mouths moving and some hand actions at the bottom of the screen. The Agent music plays. Box 10: Bee calls the other lair and his moth and antennas move. The Agent music plays. Box 11: The ice on the tank with dog in starts to crack which an ice sound effect and there is some smoke coming in from the sides of the screen with a gas sound effect. Zooms in to close up on his face and then mouth moves slightly as he talks. Protector 101 and future lab ambience play. Ancient music and cave drip play. Box 14: Cuts to bear title card as the background flashed and the bear text bounces to the new swing time music. There will also be a bear roar and a lightning crash sound effect. Box 15: The screen slides with a whoosh sound effect to a screen with a bouncing vs and the lightening moving and glowing. Swing time and the lightning sounds still play. • 9. Color Scheme I really like this color scheme and I think it would work really well for the title and loading screen of the game. The reason I think this is because it reminds me of the work don’t by Felix Colgrave as he uses a lot of pale or muted greens and blues and it is his style which I am trying to follow for the opening section of my game. I think this color scheme would be good for the cave level of my game as I think there are a lot of nice shades of pinky grey and although I may need some more grey it will work for the shadows and the blossom trees etc. This color scheme will be good for my actual game as there is a few browns which are very popular in the 1930s cartoons and still some greens in there which are muted enough to look quite vintage. I think to improve this color scheme I will look into finding some more blues and maybe oranges which could be used for skin and clothes but after that it should be good.
  • 10. CharactersCat: The reason that I chose this color scheme for the cat is because the orange shows a flair of anger or frustration and the blue shows his cold nature and link to fish. He is the main villain in my cut-scene and I think that can be guessed by the way that his eyes are the other way and how he will snarl his teeth and crunch his eyebrows as he speaks when I animate him. I think his voice will need to be deep but not like a monsters voice just a deep male voice. Bee: The reason I have chosen this color scheme is because he is a bee so it had to be black and yellow but I have chosen the brown because I think it resembles a friendly and trustworthy character. I think for his voice it would be just a regular male voice nothing else needed as he is quite a simple character. When I animate him he plays quite a serious roll but I could still use over the top cartoony expressions to make it fit the style. Monkey: The reason I picked this color scheme is because I think the bright colors show off a more jolly personality. Also the color green shows that he is a stable and prosperous character. The reason I chose his body to be black is because that’s what color chimps are and his face is just a lighter tone as it would be naturally. His voice will be a slightly higher more jolly tone as if this were a movie he would be the comical release character. Bear: The reason I picked these colors is because the bears fur is brown and I chose the dark mossy green because it shows that bears live in the wilderness and it fits the dark damp theme of the cave he lives in. I think his voice will be deep but not scary like the cats as the bear is not a bad guy but the strongest soldier on the good team. His animation style will be used to make him seem scary and ready to fight. Dog: The reason I wanted the dog to be all dark brown and have no clothes is because it stands out from all of the other characters. I think in my actual game I will change the color to a light blonde so you can see the limbs more and it looks better animated. The voice will be a very scared voice which is done by a girl or someone with a high voice but it will still be a male character. The animation style will be done to make him look cowardly and lanky so limbs will be flying around and he will seem like a clumsy character.

  • 13. Contingency Planning Potential Issue Solution Work being lost due to computer corruption. Saving all of my work onto a memory stick. Work being lost because computer shuts down. Save the work every time I complete a task or every 15 mins. Work being lost due to loosing it. Keeping my files organised and labelled clearly so work is easy to save and find. Health and Safety There will be no potential health and safety issues because the classroom is already risk assessed and somebody checks to see if it is still safe every morning. Resources Equipment/ Props/ Costume needed Locations needed Recording device to record voice and some fighting sound effects. A quiet room which may be be better soundproof due to some of the dialogue having to be shouted.
