STORYLINES
The storyline of a media product is the narrative of the whole audio
visual to inform everyone working on the product the plot of the
story. Producers use storylines for the foundations of the pre-
production stages: without a clear storyline your costume designers
or makeup artists cannot begin to think about ordering equipment
needed for the project. Not only designers need a heads-up prior to
filming, the scripts writers are a key part to success, if you don’t
execute the script the visual would be destined for failure within the
industry.
Media directors use storylines as a basis of their pro production planning. The plot sets
basic foundations of the whole production not just the pre-production stage. Without a
storyline, the person who created the idea would be the only person out of the whole team to
know the story and would be unclear for everyone to know what to do and when to do it.
Therefore, one of the first things the producers do is create a storyline, this is closely followed by a
synopsis which can be handed out to those whose knowledge of the plot don’t affect the final
product e.g. makeup artists. Everyone would be given a job, whilst keeping the plot of the story in
mind. Therefore, if you were a set designer and the genre of the visual was a horror, you wouldn’t expect to see
a Utopian and lush world. Moreover, the set designers need to be informed about the setting for each
individual scene rather than in general.
Storylines play an integral part in the producers aim to create a clear and precise pre-production portfolio for
the directors on set. The storyline is usually one of the first things the directors will read when attempting to
pitch the idea. Therefore, it is pivotal that the plot follows the requirements of the project. The storyline is also
followed by a short synopsis. If the plot is good and with good planning the project should be set for
success. However, if the plot is unclear and not communicated amongst everyone in the team,
the project begins to become an impossible task.

licensing for locations, props and even clothes. The use of product placement is vital. For
