2. Rizal and The RevoluTion
 June 1896- Dr. Pio Valenzuela go to Dapitan
to confer Rizal
 June 29 – the ship cast anchors at the port of
Dapitan and Valenzuela immediately
proceed to Rizal’s home
In the evening of the same day
Valenzuela whispered to Rizal his real
purpose of visiting and the founding of
Katipunan and its aims.

3.  Rizal was not against revolution itself but
was against it only in the absence of
preparation and arms.
He pointed out that a revolution without
sufficient arms should not be started against
armed nations.
○ Cuban revolution against Spanish
The society had no competent military
leadership, so he suggested Antonio Luna to
be directed to all military operations against
enemies

4. Any revolution was useless unless the rebels
were at least as armed as the enemies
 Bonifacio admitted that it would be fatal for
them to start a revolution without enough
arms to fight their enemies

5. PreParation for the
Struggle
 Bonifacio ordered the manufactured of
bolos to be distributed to all Katipunan
members.
Bolos alone would not do for the enemies
who are armed with Remington and
Mousers

6. •Japanese warship Kongos
•Admiral Kanimura on board had dropped
anchor at Manila Bay
This gives hope to the Katipuneros

7.  Jose Moritoro

 The Katipunan committee headed by
Bonifacio had an interview with Amiral
Kanimura
The Japanese refused to commit his country to
the revolutionary plans of the society.
 Bonifacio looked for a concrete help but he
found out that the best help was self-help

8.  Bonifacio thought of the Katipuneros in the
various branches of the government
Tito Miguel and Roman Ramos
○ Katipuneros who are employed in
Maestranza who are ordered to steal rifles
and pistols
 Through this the weapons of the Katipunan
increased but not enough to start a
revolution

9. SpaniSh SuSpicion arouSed
 The increase of the numbers of
Katipuneros was an advantage to Bonifacio
but at the same way a disadvantage
Rumors of such nocturnal meetings :
○ Manila Spanish Population (particularly the
friars)
Rumors of secret gathering and that rifles and
ammunitions from Hongkong and Yokohoma
were being landed

10.  Blanco – governor-general
 June 20, 1896
- A recollect friar in Cavite denounced the alleged
existence of the group of men meeting at banquets
 Rumors:
○ 17000 rebels in town of San Juan del Monte,
San Felipe Neri, San Pedro Makati, Pasig and
Caimito
- The parish of Guadalupe denounced the existence
of the alleged secret society
○ The curate of Santa cruz Manila, reported an
alleged secret meetings of suspicious people
in Manila

11.  Governor-general to Father Mariano Gil’s
messenger,
“Undeceive yourself, freemasonry and
filibustering are like a pit in which you put
your finger and at once you touch the
bottom. Both evils exist only in the minds of
the friars and a few other fanatical of
Spaniards”

12. The diScovery of The
KaTipunan
 Father Mariano disgusted over the
governor’s attitude ran to the governor of
Manila, General Echaluce and revealed wha
he knew about Katipunan
○ Did not listen to the friar’s humor
○ Take precautions to make Manila safe
 At almost the same time two Katipuneros
working in Diario de Manila, had
misunderstandings
○ Apolonio de la Cruz and Teodoro Patiño

13.  Patiño reveals the secret to his sister Honora,
a nun in the orphanage in Mandaluyong
○ Sor Teresa, madre portera of the
Orpahanage
- suggested to Teodoro Patiño to tell all he
knew to Father Mariano Gil
 Afternoon of August 19 – Patiño tell all he
knew about Katipunan to Father Mariano Gil
