Multiculturality
Lesson Plan 1
Time: 45 minutes
Topic: Where am I? (Around the World)
Objectives:
- To review the topic of Nationalities.
- To identify flags from different countries.
- To use verbs in the present tense.
- To recognise multi-cultural features and raise awareness about
multiculturality.
Materials needed for the lesson
- Flashcards of characters from different nationalities and countries.
- Flashcards of different Country Flags.
- Materials designed by the teacher-students.
- Student’s book Hop into English 5.
2. Routine
Timing: 5 minutes.
Type of interaction: all the class, teacher-students.
Makro skills: listening and speaking.
We will follow the routine ‘’How do you feel today?’’ and continue with a breathing
exercise before starting the lesson to help students prepare to get to work after their
recess.
Warm-up
Timing: 5 minutes.

We will present students with different flashcards showing flags from different
countries.
0. Look at these flags, can you tell which countries these flags belong to? For example:
This is China’s flag, this is Argentina’s flag, etc.
We will stick the flashcards on the board.
Follow-up questions:
- “Where are you from?”
- “Where are your parents from?”
- “Do you know any people from abroad?” Where from?”.
First activity
Timing: 5 minutes.

3. Makro skills: listening and speaking.
We will show students pictures of people from different countries and nationalities -
one by one.
1. Look at these people, where do you think they are from? Why do you think so?
What can you see in the picture?
We will ask for a volunteer to place each flashcard next to the flag the class indicates.
Second activity
Timing: 5 minutes.

Once all of the characters and flags have been matched, we will point them out and
ask students to say what their nationalities are, such as:

To these two flashcards presented previously, the volunteer will add another one
indicating the nationality. For example:

4. For this activity we will divide the class into two teams, 1 and 2, who will choose a
leader. To find out these people’s actual nationalities, we will hand them brief texts of
introduction from the characters. For example:
1. Hello! My name is Jacqueline, I’m in my last year at University. My family is from
Brazil but I lived in Spain all my life. I speak Portuguese with my parents and
grandparents but I speak Spanish with my classmates.
2. Hi! I’m Evi. I’m from Guatraché, Argentina, but my grandparents are from Europe.
I speak German all the time! But I know a few words in Spanish, like “dulce de
leche”.

3. Read these sentences carefully. Who are they talking about? Think about it and
move the flashcards if necessary.

to ask questions in English and try to guess who they chose. For example:

- Does he live in Argentina? - expected answer: Yes, he does. No, he doesn’t.

- How can you know where someone is from?
- Does physical appearance help?
- Does your appearance determine your nationality?
- Do people speak only the language that people speak in their country?
- What determines your cultural identity: the country you live in, the
language you speak, where your parents are from…?
