Procedures
ROUTINE (3 minutes)
I would greet students and ask them how they are today.
-Hello, how are you today?
-I am glad. I am fine, thanks for asking.
WARM- UP (10 minutes)
-Today we are going to deal with a topic far too different from stories. I will give you three clues and
you will try to guess what it is. Ok?
Clue 1: it is related to the society we live in.
Wait for answers.
Clue 2: it is related to culture.
Wait for answers.
Clue 3: it is about the different habits we can find around the world.
Students will try to guess the theme. If they get to the clue number 3 without guessing it, I would
play hangman with them as for guessing the word.

PRESENTATION (15 minutes)
Can you tell me how these words are related in some way?
Religion- Social norms- Values- Traditions- language
I would wait for some answers, and then say
-Ok. They are related through culture, and do you believe that all countries around the world believe
the same about religion? Do all people around the world have the same values or beliefs?
I would wait for some answers.
-Right. All people around the world think differently, act and even eat differently than we do. So, let
me ask you, how do we greet each other in Argentina?
I would wait students to say that we handshake, or kiss each others' cheek.
Transition:
-Exactly. But, let's explore how people greet each other around the world...
3. DEVELOPMENT (PRACTICE and PRODUCTION)
Activity 1: Greeting
Timing: 15 minutes
Scaffolding instances marked with italic.
-You are going to watch a video about how people greet each other around the world. Try to pay
attention to the similarities and differences you can find. You may write if you want, but it is not
mandatory. Ok?
I would wait for any doubt to arise, answer it, and play the video. If necessary, I would play the
video again.
After the video:
-Now, let's discuss what you just watched. What catches your attention the most? Why? Raise your
hand, please.
I would listen to some opinions, and then continue:
-Now think about Argentina again. Do all people in Argentina greet the same way we do in
Bariloche?
I would wait for answers.
-And do all Argentinian speak the same? Is it the same in the north and in the south? Do we all use
the same terms or names for every object?
I would wait for answers.
-That is right. We don't. What is more, there are discrepancies between our beliefs, our religion,
values, and so on. That is why we can also find diversity inside a single country.
Transition:
-Now, we are going to explore some other ideas about other cultures…
Activity 2: cultural awareness
Timing: 25 minutes
Scaffolding instances marked with italic.
Students will work on the following worksheet.
4. From: cultural awareness- McMillian pdf
I would display the text with the use of the projector and ask them to read aloud (volunteering) and
then we will discuss the answers to the questions orally.
After that, I would hand in the following task:
5. From: cultural awareness-mcMillian pdf
-You may complete this worksheet in pairs of two. You have 10 minutes to complete it.
I would monitor students and help them when necessary. Also, I would praise their work.
After students completed the task, we would revise the answers all together. After that, I would say:
Transition:
-all right. It is time to round up all we analysed so far. So, I will explain what you have to do now...
6.
CLOSURE (12 minutes)
-In pairs, you have to compare the culture from different countries with Argentinian culture. Write 5
sentences. Then, discuss how can you help to raise awareness on cultural diversity.
While students develop the task, I will monitor their work and when it is time for the break I would
say:
-Well, the lesson has come to the end. Wait for Naty to allow you to go out. See you next week!
Each activity must be described in terms of the following components:
▪ Timing
▪ Activity description and instructions as they will be said to
students (include direct speech)
▪ Scaffolding strategies
▪ Transition comment to link each stage of the lesson with the next one
