Places in the city

Topic: In the city
Objectives:
- To analyse the places in students’ own city.
- To recognise the names of the places in the city of Santa Rosa.
- To identify what you can do in each of these places using the right
preposition.
- To make sentences again using the verb “can”.
- To comprehend a short text and spot its key points.
Materials needed for the lesson
- Student’s book Hop into English 5.
- Extra materials designed by the teacher-students.
2. Routine
Timing: 5 minutes.
Type of interaction: all the class, teacher-students.

We will follow the routine ‘’How do you feel today?’’ and continue with a
breathing exercise before starting the lesson to help students prepare to get to work
after their recess.
Warm-up

0. Take a look at the first page of Unit 4. Pay attention to the title.
Someone will be asked to read the title.
- What is the girl in the corner asking? (“Do you live in a city or a town?”).
- Do you like living in Santa Rosa? Why?
- Do you like big cities or small towns? Why?
- Do you think Santa Rosa is big or small?
First activity
Timing: 5 minutes.

3. 1. Check activity number 1 in the pupil’s book and answer the question: “What do
you like about your city or town?”. Why?
We will go through the new vocabulary altogether to help them recognise the places
displayed and tell whether they are present in Santa Rosa. For example:
- Is there a theatre in Santa Rosa?
- Is there a stadium in our city?

you can do and see there to help them guess.

4. Listen to the following text about the city of Santa Rosa. Mark T (TRUE) or F
(FALSE).
My city, Santa Rosa, is very big, but not gigantic. Here, there is a
nice Lagoon called “Laguna Don Tomás”. In the Lagoon, there are
many green spaces to sit and drink mate with friends.
In the city centre, there are really tall buildings with many
apartments. Between these buildings, there are very cute
restaurants to eat pizza and hamburgers. There are one cinema,
a theatre, many clothes shops, shoe shops and bookshops. There
is also a University in front of the main square!
