1) Phoenicians
• They founded Málaga and Cádiz
• They were excellent navigators
• They came from East Europe
2) Greeks
• They had a currency (coins) to trade
• They were excellent sculptors
• They founded Rosas and Ampurias
3) Carthaginians
• They founded Ibiza and Cartago-Nova
(Cartagena)
• Romans landed in Spain in 218
BC.
• They called the land Hispania,
which is the former name for
España.
The legacy they left us:
• Roman laws
• Bridges, walls, aqueducts, roads,
amphiteatres,…
• They brought LATIN, the language
in which Spanish is based.
• They introduces Christianity.
• Important cities: Mérida,
Segovia, Tarragona, Zaragoza
• The Empire fell because
Spain was invaded by some
barbarian tribes:
Suevi, Visigoths and Vandals.
• They came from the centre
of Europe (now Germany
and surroundings)
