2. Purpose
■ overall aim of this magazine is to educate and involve people in their local music
scene by showcasing the talent in the area. This will be done by concentrating a
large percentage of content on the younger generation of musicians, rather than
big industry names. The rising artists and bands that will be included in the
content will be aged 16 to 25 and representing the 'future of the music industry'.
3. Genre
The bracket of music that will be focused on is the alternative scene. This category
will branch out and cover indie rock, indie pop and alternative rock. I have
chosen this genre as it covers multiple, similar, sub-genres which are all
applicable to the North London music scene. As well as all this, there are no
magazines focusing sheerly on the North London alternative music scene.
4. Content
Whilst my magazines key focus is the
rising generation of musicians, I am
also going to be including content on
globally successful artists who have
influenced the North London music
scene. I have decided to include
popular artists in my content as familiar
names will increase interest rates and
appeal to fans.
The magazine will include;
■ Brief history/ summary of alt music in the area
e.g. the main influences, how the genre
originated
■ Information on the key figures of alt music e.g.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flaming lips,
Radiohead etc
■ Information on how major artists became
famous
■ Exclusive interviews with new artists e.g. Q&A
■ Information/ fact sheets on new artists and
bands
■ Updates on bands mentioned in previous
issues
■ Exclusive photos
■ News about up and coming concerts/ gigs
■ Advertisements relating to the music scene
e.g. for vinyls, instruments, etc
5. Colour scheme
• Bold, eye catching colours
• Balance of grunge and
sophistication
• Contrast of black and white creates
garish atmosphere
• Green and red are complementary
My chosen colour

alternative genre the magazine is based on
• This serif font creates a ‘new age’
psychedelic atmosphere.

reader’s eye
• The sharpness of the print is
clean and clear

twist of edge
• I feel this represents my
magazines content.
Article font

reader from the
article content
7. Target audience
My target audience is males aged 15 to 24, I have chosen this
demographic after researching the audience of magazines with a
similar focus. 'Kerrang' magazine, a weekly UK based music
magazine, has an majority male audience (59%) and a median
age of 19. It would be aimed at social classes NRS C2, D and E. I
have decided upon these social classes as they correlate to my
target age range, e.g. most 19 year olds will be in NRS class E or
D.
10. distribution and marketing methods
Awareness will be spread through social media platforms, I will use Snapchat,
Facebook and Instagram as these platforms which correlate with my target
audience and their technology habits. My magazine will be distributed throughout
newsagents in North London for the price of £1.50. I have chosen this price as it
relates to my chosen demographic, social classes NRS C2, D and E.

Potential issues
12. SWOT analysis pt1
Strengths
• Mixture of both globally successful and up
and coming artists; familiar names of
popular artists will increase interest
rates/ appeal to fans.
• Content material, e.g. photos and
interviews, should not be difficult to
gather as young artists want publicity
and to make themselves known.
• News of upcoming gigs of small artists;
publication of cheap, small gigs will
appeal to the target audience of
teenagers and young adults.
• People are interested in their local area
and want to know more about the
current scene as well as the history.
Weaknesses
• People may not be interested in reading about
unknown artists
• Audience of alt music fans may be too small for
magazine to be successful
• Large age range or target audience; may be
difficult to appeal to both ends of the spectrum
13. SWOT analysis pt 2
Opportunities
In the future, I hope my
magazine will educate
and appeal to those who
are not involved in the
alternative music culture,
increasing awareness of
scene. I may also want to
alter the content so that it
can appeal to a larger
target audience.
Competition
Whilst there are no music magazines sheerly
focusing on the North London scene, there are
magazines which concentrate on the
alternative music scene in the UK. These
include ‘RockSound’ and ‘Kerrang’ magazine
which have the same target age range as my
magazine does. My magazine differs from
these as it will focus on young talent rather
than the already known, as well as this, it
concentrates on a specific area.
