Journalism 2: Task 5

How useful was your research into publishing, and real
digitally published products? Did this help you with written
style, layout, content, mode of address?
• In my opinion the research that I did was very useful as I found out information
which I never knew before. This was very helpful as it added on my personal
knowledge (stuff that I knew from before) so that I just had a brainstorm of all
these different ideas and suggestions of what I can talk about in my blog. The
whole purpose of this research task was to help me with my ideas and I think that I
fulfilled that as I was more confident of what I was going to talk about. Also, the
digital products which I researched into helped me get a better understanding of
how a website/ magazine is set up as in ways of organisation/ where certain
things go and etc. Moreover, looking at these different websites gave me ideas of
how I would have my website set out and what the layout is going to look like as I
managed to pick at least 2 things from each website to possibly use in making my
website/ magazine. The digital products really helped me with the written style as I
got a better understanding of what my chosen font/ style was going to be for my
own blog. I have many ideas in my head about what my layout is going to look
like as by looking at the different digital published products really helped me. The
mode of address from the different websites really helped me as I now know how
to present my blog to the audience (make them feel more comfortable) as I am
going to break it down into sections so that they don’t get troubled.
Evaluate the process of originating, pitching and amending your
ideas. Did peer feedback help? Teacher feedback? Which
changes did you make?
• So originally I had two ideas, football and film but I opted for football as I know more about it and have plenty
experience of it myself. So what we had to was, we had to create a pitch for our ideas and present it to our
fellow peers (around 12 slides) so that we get recorded as evidence and just in general so that we get
feedback from the audience which we can improve on. So to write about football would be a pleasure for
me and it will be fun to do so. Moreover, I got good feedback on my mind map and mood board as my
fellow peers thought my ideas were creative and unique. Also, I think that my ideas on my mind map are
really useful and significant as they will get a lot of response because they are 2 big fan favourites. On the
other hand, on my mood board there's a combination of football pictures and still images from famous films
that I have watched. However, the idea that I chose to discount is film as football is my strong point and I
know a lot about it more than I know about the film industry. Also, I feel that there is more to talk about
football than film as there is more history about football than film. I haven't really made any specific changes
to my original idea(s) as I have one thing clear in mind and I am planning to achieve that. My final idea is to
come up with a series of topics to talk, write about that has happened or will happen in football. The
feedback that I got from teacher was that I needed at least two ideas to talk about in my one topic so that I
am guaranteed audiences and interest from the public. So I took that on board and came up with my two
ideas; footballer wages and the money invested into football.
How successful was the drafting and re-drafting of the written
pieces? How well did you use written style, language, mode of
address? Give examples from your written pieces.
• I thought that my drafting really helped me come up with my original ideas as I just
put everything on paper to go on from there. the drafting also helped me get a
rough idea of what to write in my original written piece. Here is an example from
my draft: I asked the question “what’s your take on the wages of professional
footballers these day’s?” He came up with the answer “Football doesn't have an
income problem. It has a spending problem.” So as you can tell that this is a
conversation which is ongoing about the footballers wages. However, the re-
written pieces were much more detailed in context as they had stats and official
statements about the money that footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel
Messi earn. Here is an example from my real piece: When Ronaldo signed this deal
Barcelona also upgraded Messi with a new financially improved contract back in
2014 which will keep the star at Camp Nou till 2018. His new contract will earn him
as much as £275,000 a week after tax. That is €20 million a year (£14.5 million) and
this is after tax numbers making him second highest paid player in the world
behind Cristiano Ronaldo. I used all of the possible techniques required to ensure
that my written piece is up to the satisfaction of the audience. I put the writing
into context like how football fans would like it.
Evaluate the pre-production portfolio- did that help you organise
time, models, resources?
• The pre-production portfolio did really help me as it was put into sections
which broke down all the things we need to do in tasks which I thought
was very organised as it just made it more clear and less confusing for us. It
also helped me organise my time very efficiently as I just did everything
from order so what ever was first in the task I started of with that and
finished off with the last remaining task. I did it that way to ensure that I
don’t get confused or miss a task. The models that I needed were already
with me most of time so that weren’t a problem really as we had plenty of
time to shoot what ever I wanted as long as; the weather was good, we
had a football and the model was wearing sports clothes. So that was
totally fine as I took the photos on time like I wanted which was another
positive rather negative. The resources that I needed were either bought of
I had from before as I had everything in mind and knew what I was going
to take pictures of.
Evaluate your skills in image manipulation (PhotoShop),
photography, graphic design (Illustrator) and Desk Top
Publishing (InDesign). Use technical language and draw on
examples from your work.
• I thought that I coped well with theses different software's although it weren’t the first time
that I used them. However, I have used Photoshop throughout the year for my work, and
InDesign which I’ve been using for the past 2 or 3 months. I have gained many skills while
using these 2 pieces of software as they have really helped me. I have gained different skills
from each piece of software. For example, I have learnt how to edit and improve the
quality of images and how to make them more unique and interesting. Furthermore, I have
learnt how make a grid and structure it in InDesign and also how to add writing. Here is
examples of work that I did using these software's:

How well did you store your written material? For example did you
take hand-written notes / electronic; name it appropriately using
various formats; back up your work; upload; reference sources /
check for copyright
• As I knew this was going to be a long and hard unit, at first I made a folder named
‘Journalism 2’ where I would put all my work in so that it doesn’t get lost and so
that I can find it easily. I did all of my work on the computer rather than hand
written as that way I wouldn’t have lost any work as it is more safe for it to be all
stored on the computer. I backed up all my work. So what I did was when doing
the actual work in college I save it all on to my USB and then on to the schools
system on my account (making another folder), then after what I did was I saved
all the work again on my laptop at home so that if I was to lose to my USB, I would
have a back up version of my work. This way I secured myself and guaranteed my
work. I did everything in my power to ensure that I completed all the tasks and
saved in a safe place for evidence or other purposes. When I completed all the
tasks I uploaded all of them on to blogger where I had all of the journalism work
including unit 1 and unit 2. I named the task’s by the name of the topic so that I
knew which one I was looking for, so that’s easier for me.

Journalism 2 task 5

  • 1. Journalism 2: Task 5 By Onder Aslan
  • 2. How useful was your research into publishing, and real digitally published products? Did this help you with written style, layout, content, mode of address? • In my opinion the research that I did was very useful as I found out information which I never knew before. This was very helpful as it added on my personal knowledge (stuff that I knew from before) so that I just had a brainstorm of all these different ideas and suggestions of what I can talk about in my blog. The whole purpose of this research task was to help me with my ideas and I think that I fulfilled that as I was more confident of what I was going to talk about. Also, the digital products which I researched into helped me get a better understanding of how a website/ magazine is set up as in ways of organisation/ where certain things go and etc. Moreover, looking at these different websites gave me ideas of how I would have my website set out and what the layout is going to look like as I managed to pick at least 2 things from each website to possibly use in making my website/ magazine. The digital products really helped me with the written style as I got a better understanding of what my chosen font/ style was going to be for my own blog. I have many ideas in my head about what my layout is going to look like as by looking at the different digital published products really helped me. The mode of address from the different websites really helped me as I now know how to present my blog to the audience (make them feel more comfortable) as I am going to break it down into sections so that they don’t get troubled.
  • 3. Evaluate the process of originating, pitching and amending your ideas. Did peer feedback help? Teacher feedback? Which changes did you make? • So originally I had two ideas, football and film but I opted for football as I know more about it and have plenty experience of it myself. So what we had to was, we had to create a pitch for our ideas and present it to our fellow peers (around 12 slides) so that we get recorded as evidence and just in general so that we get feedback from the audience which we can improve on. So to write about football would be a pleasure for me and it will be fun to do so. Moreover, I got good feedback on my mind map and mood board as my fellow peers thought my ideas were creative and unique. Also, I think that my ideas on my mind map are really useful and significant as they will get a lot of response because they are 2 big fan favourites. On the other hand, on my mood board there's a combination of football pictures and still images from famous films that I have watched. However, the idea that I chose to discount is film as football is my strong point and I know a lot about it more than I know about the film industry. Also, I feel that there is more to talk about football than film as there is more history about football than film. I haven't really made any specific changes to my original idea(s) as I have one thing clear in mind and I am planning to achieve that. My final idea is to come up with a series of topics to talk, write about that has happened or will happen in football. The feedback that I got from teacher was that I needed at least two ideas to talk about in my one topic so that I am guaranteed audiences and interest from the public. So I took that on board and came up with my two ideas; footballer wages and the money invested into football.
  • 4. How successful was the drafting and re-drafting of the written pieces? How well did you use written style, language, mode of address? Give examples from your written pieces. • I thought that my drafting really helped me come up with my original ideas as I just put everything on paper to go on from there. the drafting also helped me get a rough idea of what to write in my original written piece. Here is an example from my draft: I asked the question “what’s your take on the wages of professional footballers these day’s?” He came up with the answer “Football doesn't have an income problem. It has a spending problem.” So as you can tell that this is a conversation which is ongoing about the footballers wages. However, the re- written pieces were much more detailed in context as they had stats and official statements about the money that footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi earn. Here is an example from my real piece: When Ronaldo signed this deal Barcelona also upgraded Messi with a new financially improved contract back in 2014 which will keep the star at Camp Nou till 2018. His new contract will earn him as much as ÂŁ275,000 a week after tax. That is €20 million a year (ÂŁ14.5 million) and this is after tax numbers making him second highest paid player in the world behind Cristiano Ronaldo. I used all of the possible techniques required to ensure that my written piece is up to the satisfaction of the audience. I put the writing into context like how football fans would like it.
  • 5. Evaluate the pre-production portfolio- did that help you organise time, models, resources? • The pre-production portfolio did really help me as it was put into sections which broke down all the things we need to do in tasks which I thought was very organised as it just made it more clear and less confusing for us. It also helped me organise my time very efficiently as I just did everything from order so what ever was first in the task I started of with that and finished off with the last remaining task. I did it that way to ensure that I don’t get confused or miss a task. The models that I needed were already with me most of time so that weren’t a problem really as we had plenty of time to shoot what ever I wanted as long as; the weather was good, we had a football and the model was wearing sports clothes. So that was totally fine as I took the photos on time like I wanted which was another positive rather negative. The resources that I needed were either bought of I had from before as I had everything in mind and knew what I was going to take pictures of.
  • 6. Evaluate your skills in image manipulation (PhotoShop), photography, graphic design (Illustrator) and Desk Top Publishing (InDesign). Use technical language and draw on examples from your work. • I thought that I coped well with theses different software's although it weren’t the first time that I used them. However, I have used Photoshop throughout the year for my work, and InDesign which I’ve been using for the past 2 or 3 months. I have gained many skills while using these 2 pieces of software as they have really helped me. I have gained different skills from each piece of software. For example, I have learnt how to edit and improve the quality of images and how to make them more unique and interesting. Furthermore, I have learnt how make a grid and structure it in InDesign and also how to add writing. Here is examples of work that I did using these software's: • Photo- shop InDesign
  • 7. How well did you store your written material? For example did you take hand-written notes / electronic; name it appropriately using various formats; back up your work; upload; reference sources / check for copyright • As I knew this was going to be a long and hard unit, at first I made a folder named ‘Journalism 2’ where I would put all my work in so that it doesn’t get lost and so that I can find it easily. I did all of my work on the computer rather than hand written as that way I wouldn’t have lost any work as it is more safe for it to be all stored on the computer. I backed up all my work. So what I did was when doing the actual work in college I save it all on to my USB and then on to the schools system on my account (making another folder), then after what I did was I saved all the work again on my laptop at home so that if I was to lose to my USB, I would have a back up version of my work. This way I secured myself and guaranteed my work. I did everything in my power to ensure that I completed all the tasks and saved in a safe place for evidence or other purposes. When I completed all the tasks I uploaded all of them on to blogger where I had all of the journalism work including unit 1 and unit 2. I named the task’s by the name of the topic so that I knew which one I was looking for, so that’s easier for me.
