2. • Contextual research on Game of Thrones (Books)
• In the first book A Song of Ice and Fire we learn of some history provided nearly three centuries prior
to the events of the first book. We learn about the conquer and rule of the Targaryen dynasty led by
Aegon I and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys. They rule for a mere 300 years with an ensue of civil war
and military supremacy. However the Fall of the Mad king under Lord Robert Baratheon lead, leaves
15 peaceful years of relative prosperity and no sight of Dragons or Targaeryns, and so the book begins.
• Now the nine year long summer is drawing to a close, King Robert prepares for "the long
Winter". The principal chronicles of the book see the great houses of Westeros power struggle for the
Iron Throne, deception and allegiances, honour and truth take centre stage all the way through
this book, however, a terrible accident on a hunting trip leaves King Robert in a state of critical injury.
On his death bed he assigns his trusty friend Eddard Stark to rule until the true born heir is old
enough to rule, though greed and patience leaves Jon Stark a treasonous fool and is beheaded
unjustly by the order of King Joffrey Baratheon.
• The second half of the book focuses in the North simply known as “the wall” it is a 8000 year old thick
and tall wall made of ice it was build to protect the seven kingdoms from supernatural beings known
as the “others”. The Knights watch guards the wall 24 hours a day in extreme conditions with little
comfort, the sworn brotherhoods main job is to keep the free folk out of the kingdom, the Wildlings
are many tribes living in the sparse wilderness of the “north beyond” however they know Winter is
coming and try desperate attempts to salvage a space to live south of the wall to survive the
hardships to come. They also talk of many sightings of the dead resurrecting with deep blue eyes and
no pulse growing at large, this subplot builds with suspense right through the book. This part of the
book is largely told through Jon Snows eyes as he joins the brotherhood at a young age following in his
Uncle Benjens footsteps, we see Jon climb the ranks rather quickly and ends up the Lord commander
of the Knights watch, and so it begins.
3. • Contextual research on Game of Thrones (Series)
• The Game of Thrones series is heavily based on the books by George RR
Martin, though similar in its layout the series tends to rely on sexual
promiscuity in the first seasons and adapts largely from the contents of
the books. The first episode we see the Stark family prepare for a highly
anticipated visit from the King and his wedded family the Lannister's.
Winterfell is at its best ready for the arrival of the royal fleet, the job of
Jon Aryn be offered to Ned?
• Meanwhile across the narrow sea in Pentos Viserys Targaryen thinks of a
plan to avenge Robert Baretheon and to win the throne back; he forges
an alliance with the Dothraki warriors (the best fighters in the land) and
sets an arranged marriage with the leader Khal Drogo to wed his Sister,
in return he wants the army to head west and take Kings landing.

4. Survey Monkey (Primary Research)
I asked my audience whether they had watched an episode of Game Of Thrones as it is essential to know a
little about the storylines and series itself in orders to answer and understand my Fanzine. The results show
that only 40% had not watched the series and 60% had. This shows the majority of my audience had watched
it, and therefore will give me accurate results for the rest of my questionnaire, and informing my FMP and
Fanzine.
5. Survey Monkey (Primary Research)
I asked in my survey whether my audience had ever ‘Read a Fanzine’ 80% said yes and 20% said no. This
is helpful information as it shows there is a big market for fanzines and still very relevant, whether that be
an online forum or as a print product.
6. Survey Monkey (Primary Research)
I asked my audience what elements in a fanzine do they look for, the results show a staggering 60% found
that images appeal to them the most when browsing for a fanzine. This is essential information for me as I
will ensure in my own FMP fanzine contains lots of interesting, aesthetically pleasing images to entice my
audience. Whereas 40% of my audience look for the article content is interesting which again I will ensure is
apparent in my own work.
7. Survey Monkey (Primary Research)
In this question I asked what elements of the show keeps the viewers watching; from the four replies we can
see a correlation, most say they enjoy watching the “sexual element” of the show, and the other two allude to
liking the idea of the “politics” and “swords” of the show.
8. Survey Monkey (Primary Research)
40% of the people answered that they be willing to spend £1-2 on a fanzine and the
other 60% said they would spend £3-4, this is useful information as I know what price
to set my own fanzine, I will probably aim for £3, to which is reaonsable.
9. Most of the canditates that answered my Survey Monkey were Female at the
majority 60%, males being the minority 40% however I do not believe that this
represents the population watching Game of Thrones according to my
10. From the four categories seen above answering “ where do you mostly
read Magazines/Fanzines” Articles on Social Media was the most
popular at 60% this is useful as it can help me style my Fanzine similarly
to a Articles on Twitter or Facebook. Online Subscriptions were also
popular at 40% this may the second choice because sometimes they
require a fee.
11. From this Survey Monkey question “ would you read a fanzine dedicated to Game Of Thrones” most of the
participants answered yes at 60%, this is reassuring to hear as I feel there will be a target audience that will
buy my Fanzine, however 40% said no, this still is a large chunk of people who would not be interested in a
Game Of Thrones Fanzine, I will have to investigate more into a non- fan friendly Fanzine that will be
interesting for those who said no in the hopes of a higher percentage of people who will say “yes” to
reading a G.O.T. Fanzine.
12. In my survey I asked my audience ‘when was the last time you purchased a Fanzine’ I found this question essential
to ask as I wanted to know if my audience had regularly or not so regularly bought a Fanzine, simply to find how
relevant Fanzine are today, I found the results to have quite a range in answers for example; 1-2 months showed
40%, 3-4 months showed 20% months, and finally 5-6 months showed 40%, this demonstrates to me that Fanzines
are still relevant to this day.
13. In my survey I asked my audience whether they preferred the books or the TV series. I did this intentionally as I
the secondary data, they asked the same question I wanted to know if this was still relevant to my own
audience, in this other graph it stated ‘The graph shows that 27.7% read the books first, 82.2% watched the
show first, and finally 9.2% watched and read the books simultaneously’. My results showed similar findings,
such as Books having 20% being preferred and series with 80% being preferred.
14. • Audience Research (Secondary)
According to this survey conducted by the your average Game of Throne fan is predominately male, aged 18-
29. This isn’t surprising to me as there is a lot of sexual promiscuity in the first seasons of Game of Thrones,
and it is well know that sex sells and stereotypically males might be more enticed to watch such content.
However you have to consider where this survey was placed, on Reddit.com , where a vast majority of the
respondents are male. This might not account for all fans and gender of the series. I could apply this to my
fanzine as I can use colour schemes that might entice a male audience which would sell the fanzine more.
15. Audience Research (Secondary)
In this graph shows the representation of male, female and ‘other’ viewers of the TV series Game of Thrones.
The reason why I looked at this this statistic is because I wanted to understand the audience gender split, and
how I could aim my own FMP fanzine toward an accurate target audience. This is important because although
useful to know which gender watches more, however from a selling point of view I would like more of a even
gender split in viewing and readership because the female 50% is just as important for selling therefore I will
filter more female gender specific material to even this out, this will benefit in the long run.
16. There’s almost 500,000 more males than females. This graph also matches the results from the Time Capsule
survey, in that the average voter age is 18-29, but the 30-44 range isn’t too far behind
GoT TV show grew year-on-year in viewership as new seasons were released. The Season 4 premiere had 6.6
million viewers during the 9pm broadcast, which was up 2.2 from the previous year. The numbers don’t account
for the real viewership though, as it’s difficult to know the amount of illegal downloads. GoT is reported as the
most pirated show in history.
17. Audience Research (Secondary)
This graph show whether the audience first read the books or and watched the HBO TV series. The graph shows that 27.7%
read the books first, 82.2% watched the show first, and finally 9.2% watched and read the books simultaneously. The reason
why I wanted to know this is statistic so I could inform my own FMP fanzine, and to know whether to include more content
from the books or the TV series, this is useful information as it means I can include the best content relevant to the target
audience making sure they don’t lose interest as most of the content will be filtered from the series therefore the fanzine will
sell well.
18. Audience Research (Secondary)
In this graph shows the range of ethnicity of viewership of the HBO series GOT, the graphs states that 7.4% Asian/Indian
watch the show, 18% Caucasian, 67.2% African-American, and the rest of the stats leave it to Hispanic and Unknown. I
found this statistic to be important as I wanted to ensure my own FMP Fanzine, had an accurate target audience, I realise
from this I should a range of character ethnicities in my fanzine, perhaps I will go back to my proposal and change this.
19. Audience Research (Secondary) Existing Fanzines.
Background-
This is quite a unique front cover in
comparison to the classic Game of
Thrones book covers, the reason I say
this is because it shows one of the
geographical settings in this fantasy
world. The use of image and colour
suggests to me that it is set in the north
near Winterfell, we can see the tree line
and beyond that is mist to which is hard
to see beyond a kind of “no mansland”.
The Dire wolf and the paw prints
pressed in the snow coming towards the
viewer interests the reader as to where
this creature has been and what it has
seen. They could have chosen the Iron
throne as the cover but the North they
chose, they suggests the heart of this
book is set at Winterfell, who wouldn’t
want to buy this book with that
background, I may use this as inspiration
for my Fanzine.
Font-
You can tell that this font is
personalised, it is unique in its form;
it reminds of a musical note on the
“G” and the “T” especially. When I
look at this title I hear the famously
renowned theme tune for the TV
show Ramin Djawadi wrote for the
show. This Mnemonic device is very
clever as it aids the retrieval the
human memory, thus connecting
this book to the show by music will
instantly increase the readership
and selling point of this book.
Images-
The illustration used here Is something I will make sure it will appear in my own work. I love how it looks hand
drawn and not over edited, its seems authentic. The dire wolf resembles Winterfell and The Stark legacy it
suggests that the heart of this book is right there, where the wolf is standing full of mystery, legacy and love ready
to be discovered by the reader. I will use this as discusse, as using a iconographic symbol like a Dragon or a Lion or
a Dire Wolf connotes so much more than just the image itself, its very effective.
20. Audience Research (Secondary) Existing FanzinesTitle- This Sans Serif typeface
is simplistic but still eye-
catching, I liked that the
whole title stretched across
the double page, this is a
rarity seen in magazines. It is
contemporary in its design
and is set of by the clinically
white space.
This is something I can use in
my own work layout as I like
how different the look is, and
will capture the eye of my
audience, rather than it being
mundane and boring, it sets
above the rest.
Down the left hand side of
the DPS you see the
beginning of the title ‘The
revenge of’ this again uses a
technique of rotating the eye
across the page, starting from
bottom left to top left to
across right. This again is
innovative.
Image- the image here used is taken in a studio with a white backdrop. I like the simplicity of
this as it gives you direct eyeline toward Mark Ronson smashing up a trumpet. This has
image-text cohesion with the subtitle stating “No trumpets” This image is cleverly thought
out to coincide with the content of the article. The hammer in his hand also links to the text,
which helps this whole double page spread and article come together in a professional
manner.
Colour Scheme- The use
of the Black & White
colours are simple yet
very effective. The lack of
colour is perhaps shows
‘no bells, no whistles’
mindset Mark Ronson is
in, and helps the
audience
concentrate on the
content of the article and
the music. This is
something I will have to
consider in my own work,
whether to use lots of
colour or concentrate the
reader on the images and
the articles included in
my own Fanzine. As I
intend to write a lot of
facts about game of
thrones.
Layout-
21. FRONT COVER BOOK
Fonts-
Trajan Pro is the font used in the famous TV series Game of Thrones. It is classic and elegant typeface. It is
considered to be the classic Roman letter forms. Using Ancient typefaces to fit the genre is useful because the
audience when looking at the cover is given an insinuation of what this book about; for example when I look at
this font I would imagine to be on some form of ancient piece of history like an important building or an old map,
even a scroll with biblical references in it. This font was clearly chosen because it demotes to the reader what
genre this book is; in this case you do judge a book by its cover.
Layout-
Interestingly I find the background refreshing even though we know from the font that this will not be a light read.
This purposeful choice of background will be have chosen I believe because of the colour scheme, it is an irony.
The crisp blues grey and cold whites refreshes the eye, this will have done to captivate the reader into flicking the
pages and then buying the book. It is ironic because of the use of dark regal font that denotates a history
compared to the background which is fresh and untouched by humanity.
Title-
The title is directly in the centre of the book cover, although common for a book there is still something to be said
for the use of the positioning. On a book shelf there will be 10- 20 other books of that category all appealing to
the same market, the use of direct mode of address is necessary because it almost screams to the buyer read me,
there is also the point of it being satisfying to the eye, its comforting to see it perfectly placed in the middle of the
page with the layout size and font fitting around the name of the book.
Graphic-
The sticker placed on the book cover is clever marketing, its gives the buyer immediate gratification both fans of
the chronicles but also new readers. For the fans its as though there adding to the collection of “merchandise”
and for the new readers it entices them as they feel they joining something big, although only a sticker its smart in
its effect. On a side note the sticker on the book is like a sigil all the great houses has it and each reader for a
moment may think they have their own.
22. Audience Research (Secondary) Existing Fanzines
Images- I picked this particular fanzine as I like the animation characters on the front, I believe this is
done to create a comic looking booklet, The use of different scary characters, behind the presumed
‘reader’ informs the reader of what they might expect in the fanzine. These have been either hand
drawn and scanned into Photoshop or animated on a software, This is something I could explore in
my own work. In the corner of the fanzine you can see logo with ‘EC’ which shows the company, this
use of graphics is also something I would like to include in my own work as I feel it adds a sense of
professionalism. As for the images on the double page spread the colour scheme of the images were
much more simplistic, perhaps this was done to ensure the audience focused on the content/text in
the horror stories rather than the images, however the images were still very details along side the
texts. And often have text to coincide with images, which creates text image cohesion. This is
something I want to include in my own work.
Font/Content- I found that a lot of the text was in a very formal font perhaps this was done to keep
the reader engaged to the stories and to show that writing style is of a graphic content therefore
written in traditional font. However the layout of the text is more advanced as it spreads around
different images, and put in different places to stop the reader being bored and to make the double
page spreads interesting, the actual spacing between the letters are close, this might have been done
so the author can include more content on a page. However the cover has much less text on it but
uses different fonts for example the title is bright yellow and uses the words ‘Terror’ in a font that is
visually related to the horror genre, this would have been done to catch the audiences attention. I
liked the colour scheme across the front cover as the white and yellow were eye catching to an
audience. This is something I will use in my own work.
23. Existing Product Fan Website The URL, also known as
the web address is how
users the and access the
website.
In almost all
circumstances the URL is
short, and clearly
represents the content
of the site, whether that
be the through a name
or a factual description.
The home page is simply the main page for the website.
When typing the URL into a web browser, you will be
taken to websites home page. The content of the home
page can vary dramatically depending on the site itself,
for example this page clearly states ‘season 8 score
alludes to Jamie-Brienne wedding’ which indicates it is
about GOT. This is something I will include in my own
website I make one. It is important that the home page
has clear navigation elements to direct users around
the website.
Masthead- The
websites name/or
logo ‘Fansized’ must
be clearly shown. It is
an important
element of the
websites branding.
The descions made in
the choice of font,
colours, size style etc.
can tell the audience
about the website
and its content and
target audience,
When clicking on the
masthead the user
would expect to be
taken back to the
website home page.
Navigation- The navigation covers all of the
links that move the user around within the
website itself. Move from page to page but
not without leaving the site as whole.
Main image-
The main image is found
on the home page, as seen
on this website, the images
of Jason Mamoa (Dothraki
King) and Jamie Lannister
and Brielle. Shows
different camera angles,
special effects and finally
the composition of the
images
24. Existing Font Analysis
The font used predominantly across the board for Game Of Thrones is this one
presented, It reminds me of an ancient style of font used for old scrolls or
biblical texts. In the letters “O” there three lines down it, this reminds of the
sharp outlines of a sword, this will be done to relate the title of the book to the
themes used throughout. At the ends of each letter the font is thickened almost
like its been welded on mounted on to the cover this is intentional as it nodes
the historical element well thought and written by the author, the font appears
to be written in stone.
This font is vastly different from the first, its more a bubble rounded
text. It appears to more of a native style of writing, you probably would
not see this on a sign in the U.K. or in relation to my topic in the North,
you’d perhaps see this across the Narrow sea in Pentos or Naarth. This
font could be used to eventuate the type of area a person is, it doesn’t
read historic or royal it adds element of fresh and modern.
I would not use this for my project as it does not fit my Game Of
Thrones Fanzine, however I thought I might use it to contrast
with the first existing font used on this slide to show how fonts
can change a aesthetic straight away. The shape of letters
remind of a quill you follow the movement of the lettering as it
flows with the quill angled tip. I would perhaps use this If I was
writing a letter for my fanzine.
25. Colour Schemes.
The colour scheme here is a different range from light cream to dark brown. In earlier seasons you see Cersei’s colour scheme to be
quite bold, in expensive furs and silks, this connotes her affluence and wealth being the queen of Kings Landing. Usually you see the
Lannister's in bold reds, purples, royal blues. The snap shot shows cerci in the North, the colour change in this episode might represent
her feelings toward her enemies the Starks. I will most likely use rich, royal colours in my dps of the Lannister's as I want to express the
chauvinistic, materialistic side to the Lannister’s as a family
The colour scheme reminds of me of a tapestry with rich colours chosen to portray a difference in geographical location. I believe
this is both purposeful and practical; they have chosen these colours because it shows the affluence of this region and the regal
allure the Stormborn Queen has in the earlier seasons, practically lighter colours are better in the heat therefore light blues and
creams will ensure the queen will not wilt in the weather, do not miss the elements of gold on the garment. I will consider to apply
this to my own fanzine because it shows a refreshing image to the eyes instead of the darker harsh greys and black images, font and
text shown on the covers of the book from the Game of Thrones. This way my fanzine will be unique as it finds a gap in the market
and as a result will sell better.
27. Specific Technical Research (Managing pages and spreads) as found on Adobe help website.
-Move, duplicate, and delete pages and spreads
You can use the Pages panel to freely arrange, duplicate, and recombine pages and spreads. Keep the following guidelines in
mind when adding, arranging, duplicating, or removing pages within a document:
InDesign preserves the threads between text frames.
InDesign redistributes pages according to how the Allow Document Pages To Shuffle command is set.
An object that spans multiple pages stays with the page on which the object’s bounding box covers the most area
As you drag, the vertical bar indicates where the page will appear when you drop it. If the black rectangle or bar touches a
spread when Allow Pages to Shuffle is turned off, the page you’re dragging will extend that spread; otherwise, document
pages will be redistributed to match the Facing Pages setting in the File > Document Setup dialog box.
In the Pages panel, drag a page icon to a new position within the document.

28. How to render an image on Photoshop (as found on YouTube)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoleEZfQBWI
1.Load into Photoshop a picture that has an image you’d
like to render. For example, load a photo of a person whose
background you’d like to remove
2. Click the Tools palette icon shaped like a lasso to run the
Lasso tool. Move the mouse to a point just outside the
outline of the image you want to render. Press and hold the
left mouse button, then drag around the image. Stay close
to the image’s outline, but don’t try to be exact -- that’s the
job of Refine Mask. The important thing is not to stray into
the image itself.
3. Release the mouse when you’ve traced completely
around the image, then click the Layer panel button shaped
like a circle within a rectangle. This runs the “Add Layer
Mask” tool, which creates a mask that hides the image’s
background. The mask appears as a black and white
thumbnail on the right of the currently selected layer in the
Layers panel.
4. Right-click the mask thumbnail and then click “Refine” to
open the “Refine Mask” dialog box. Drag the “Radius” slider
slowly to the right, observing closely the image as you do
so. When the background pixels, which now appear in red,
begin to intrude onto the image, drag “Radius” back to the
left slightly. There may still be a gap between the red
background and the image.
5. Drag the mouse, which is loaded by default with the
Refine Radius brush, over a portion of a gap between the
image and its background. Photoshop will remove the gap
so the red background fits snugly to the image.

31. TV Theorist
• Hypodermic Needle Syringe Theory-
• The Hypodermic needle theory is a linear communication theory that suggests that media messages are
injected directly into the brains of passive audiences.
• The Hypodermic needle theory is a linear communication theory that suggests that media messages are
injected directly into the brains of passive audiences.
• This could apply to my FMP as Game of Thrones often has a subtle hint to real life issues but hidden in a
middle earth genre to perhaps distract the audience from their own issues. For example Thrones could be
raising controversial of its depiction of its female characters, such as the violence and assault some of the
characters are put through, similarly to the modern day movement of ‘Me too’.
32. • Colour Psychology Theory
• What is colour psychology?
• Color psychology is the study of how color affects our emotions and behaviors. Depending on your upbringing, cultural background and personal preference, certain colors can
make you feel a certain way.
• Why does the psychology of color selection matter?
• Have you ever noticed how a yellow room tends to make you feel brighter or happier? Or how a red dress can make you feel a sense of passion, while a red sign can alert you to
danger?
• The topic of color psychology can be a bit complicated because color and feelings can be highly subjective. But studies suggest that color does influence emotion in specific ways.
• “As a company that manufactures baby products, we want our brand to invoke a feeling of comfort and reliability. We believe that color selection plays a large part in generating
these emotions,” says Tali Zipper, vice president of marketing for Baby K’tan LLC. She explains their strategy of choosing cheerful colors that would also signify reliability,
encouraging customers to feel at ease when purchasing their products.
• Zipper goes on to explain that the company found studies that suggested blue is often connected with credibility and calmness. They decided to alter their blue to a more vibrant
hue so customers would also associate their brand with joy.
• It’s also important to recognize that different colors can evoke different emotions depending on the culture, according to Lauren Ellis, creative director at Masonry. For example,
red in Western cultures usually means danger, passion or anger, while it signifies luck or joy in Eastern cultures. Blue is viewed as masculine in the U.S. but feminine in China.
• Color selection can make a big impact on the reaction of your audience and how they feel about your product. It can provoke hunger, inspire trust or elicit a feeling of calm or
excitement. This is why every color should be selected strategically to contribute to the overall goals of the piece.
• How this relates to my FMP
• This study will help me grasp a greater understanding of how colour can effect my target audiences emotions and perhaps how my products are selected by an audience, This
study also shows me how real world companies have used this study to their advantage, and how colour psychology gives me a clear knowledge on which actually suits best for
different cultures. For example I can use light pinks to appeal to perhaps young females to make them feel feminine and more compelled to buy/read my products, it is essential
to use the correct colour scheme to intrigue my audience more , rather than using dark/dull colours that will not entice my audience or that will relate to my products,
33. Typography Theory.
• Typefaces usually are broken down into the following categories:
• Serif
• Sans-Serif
• A serif is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or a symbol.
If the letters and symbols of a typeface have serifs, then we call it a serif
typeface. The word “sans” is French for “without” and a Sans-Serif
typeface is.
• The thought is that the strokes of the serif typeface help guide the eye
across a line of text. Serifs are almost a standard when it comes to most
newspapers. Sans-Serif is said to be easier on the eye when reading
online.
• Display
• Display is usually a typeface used with large sizes, usually 20 or above.
They are generally not used for body, but they are perfect for
demonstrating a visual theme when used for titles and heading.
• Script
• Script is a typeface based on the appearance of handwritten letters
and symbols.
• Dingbat
• Dingbat is a special typeface used for scientific/mathematical
formulas or graphic icons. Don’t use a typeface just because you like
it, think of the impact it will have and make sure that it carries the
references and associations your design
34. Typography Theory
• The most common form encountered text in is black over white background. Despite the fact that people love colours, sometimes
colour makes text harder to read, less enjoyable and can ever cause pain when looked at for a longer time. It is almost always a bad
idea to choose a text color and a background color which contrast with one another in a discordant manner
• It is important to have enough contrast between the background and the text in order for the text to be legible, also need to make
sure the colours don’t clash. Keeping the background of the text simple (fewer colours) is often the best choice as it allows to use a
small set of colours and get optimal results.
• 3. Limited use of display face
• Display typefaces are fun and they look very interesting. They are not to be used excessively. Keep in mind that ornamental and
display typefaces were not designed to be used for bodies of text as they generally require a larger font to be readable. A good thing
to remember is that these faces tend to be more complex, thus tiring the viewer’s eyes easily
