Verb infinitives are the original form of the
verb before it is conjugated. It’s definition
always begins “to…
For example:
Hablar-to speak Ir-to go
Comer-to eat Ser-to be
Escribir-to write Tener-to have
2. Using Verb Infinitives
• We use verb infinitives in idioms or
phrases.
For example:
I’m going to speak (hablar) to…
We have to study (estudiar) for…
3. Using Tener-to have
• We learned the following chart for tener:
Yo- tengo nosotros-tenemos
Tú- tienes
él ellos
ella tiene ellas tienen
usted ustedes
4. To say the phrase “to have to…” we use
the verb “tener” then “que” then the
“infinitive verb”. The formula is:
tener+ que + infinitive verb

I have to speak with Professor Cotto.
Tengo (I have) + que + hablar (to speak)=
Tengo que hablar con la profesora Cotto.
We have to study for the history test.
Tenemos (we have) + que + estudiar (to study)=
Tenemos que estudiar para el examen en la clase
de historia.
6. Using Ir- to go
