3. What is an infinitive?
to + base form of the verb

4. Crazy English problem 
Sometimes we use a gerund, and sometimes we use
an infinitive.
There is no logic about it.

5. For example:
I love swimming (gerund) OR I love to swim (infinitive) –
both the gerund and the infinitive are OK
I dislike getting up early in the morning – gerund. We
don’t use the infinitive
I don’t how to fly – infinitive. We don’t use the gerund.
