2. Why is audience feedback important?
Audience feedback is key in the media, as the audience bring in the revenue and make a
persons work credible, it is also what makes a film popular or not, the more people that
enjoy a film the more the message of it gets circulated. The aim of an
editor/director/producer is to please their audience. The audience is the reason for
making a film, in some cases, however in short films it sometimes is not about the money
and number of people that would go and watch it but it is about expressing themselves.
How we go about getting audience feedback:
• Questionnaires- My preferred use of getting audience feedback was through
questionnaires as it does not put much pressure on the audience therefore results are
more likely to be accurate and true, questionnaires can be designed by using closed
questions with yes or no answers or open where the audience can comment on what
their opinion is. As my film is not a Hollywood Blockbuster my scale of people I asked
would be a lot smaller than a big film would go and get feedback from, 30 out of 50
people filled out the questionnaire.
• Other options include test screenings; this is where an audience is asked to watch the
film before it is released and they must comment on good and bad points, these points
are then taken into account and the film may be re-edited, we used similar to this but
with our peers just to make a few comments on how we could improve our film from
another perspective during the editing process.
3. Age
12 - 15
16 - 18
35 - 45
The majority of those who came to watch the screening of our short film was
16 – 18 at 70% This is particularly accurate on which we aimed the age of
our target audience would be, this is due to older teenagers and young adults
having a higher interest in short film especially the influence it has on social
media. This age is also similar to film students wanting to make their debut
within the film industry. 20% of the 30 people who filled out the questionnaire
was 12 – 15, who are also within our target audience range. Furthermore
10% were 35 – 45 years old this was probably influenced by the father role
within our production which parents could relate to.
4. Gender
Female
Male
90% of those who came to watch the screening of Promise were
female, during post production and research into romance drama we
expected the majority of our audience to be female.
5. Did you enjoy the short film?
Yes
No
95 % said that they enjoyed our film which is exactly what we had hoped
for due to mass amounts of research into producing an effective short
film, romance drama and audience research which we carried out post
and during the making of our production. 5% said they did not enjoy our
short film, however we can improve our short based on constructive
criticism.
6. Do you think the narration went well?
Yes
No
The majority said yes, they thought it went well. I believe the opening
sequence of Ellie explaining her mothers death was particularly effective
in doing this.
7. Who do you think is the target audience?
Teenagers
Adults
Children
The majority said teenagers followed by adults which is what we were
hoping the response would be especially after a large amount in research
and planning.
8. Did you find Ellie relatable?
Yes
Quite
Not really
Not at all
75% of those who filled out the questionnaire stated yes they did find
Ellie relatable which was probably due to the similarities within age.
9. What genre is the film?
Romance
Everyone who filled out the questionnaire we correct in identifying the
genre of our short film. This shows that we followed conventions of
romance genre successfully.
10. What certificate would you give this film?
12
PG
15
18
95% were correct in identifying the certificate of our short film, this is
probably due to the nature of our short as well as the use of ‘bullsh*t’ that
conveyed a 12 rating rather than PG.
11. What would you rate this short film?
5
4
3
0 - 1
60% of our audience gave our production a 5 stars and 30% gave it 4
stars which we are incredibly happy with due to the hard work we put
into Promise.
12. Was the ending predictable?
No
Yes
Most of our audience did not find the ending predictable, this may be due to
the issue of Ellie’s father not being accepting of Sam only being resolved
towards the end of our production which kept our audience engaged. I
would say this was fair as we did drop hints that it could be resolved after his
discussion with Sam and argument with Ellie
13. What was the strongest part of the film?
Camera Work
Acting
The results showed that was a equal amount of people who thought the camera
work and acting was the strongest part. Therefore this suggest they were just as
strong as each other which helped us to create a successful film.
14. Would you watch it again?
Yes
No
95% of those said they would watch it again, after the screening had finished
a few of peers actually stayed behind to watch it again which we were very
happy with.
