QUESTION 3
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED
FROM YOUR AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK?
WINNER WINNER FIDGET SPINNER AND
AUDIENCE
• Our short film “Winner Winner Fidget Spinner” is a comedy
hybrid time travelling adventure where our main character Max
finds a fidget spinner lying on the ground only to realise that
when he spins it, it sends him spiralling back in time. The whole
aim of our film was to give our audience a light hearted
humorous film that they could relax to and enjoy. The comedy
of our film is encapsulated from our main character Max as we
get the actor (Liam Bowskill) to act dopey and unaware of his
surroundings so that he uses his time travelling fidget spinner
for mundane tasks adding to the comedic side of our film. The
reason our film is a comedy hybrid is due to the fact that the
fidget spinner involves time travel which is a key convention of
science fiction. Furthermore, from setting our film in a local
environment, the audience are encouraged to align with the
main character as the audience can relate to the area our main
character lives in. Furthermore, due to his chid like nature, this
also entices the audience to align with Max as they may have
children who portray this same attitude. By creating audience
alignment this gives our audience the most enjoyable
experience possible as they can fully relate to the character and
his surroundings.
AUDIENCE RESEARCH
• Researching into a target audience is one of the major elements of making the film as you need to know what to film
depending on what age group you are showing your film to. Therefore when conducting the audience research we decided to
use Google to find the information we needed and we used Blogger to present the information we had found. Firstly, we
decided to look at the BBFC website to find out what certificate we should certify our film as. We managed to do this through
the guidelines given to us by the BBFC. After researching into the guidelines, we decided to rate our film a 12 due to intended
violence and the complex aspect of time travel would be hard to understand for younger audiences. By rating our film a 12 this
was great for our storyline as the plot of our storyline was aimed around young teenagers as the majority of teenagers tend to
use fidget spinners so they can relate to the film and the character significantly. Due to our film being a comedy hybrid genre
we don’t have a specific gender we are trying to attract with our film which is effective as a media product as we would get a
bigger audience to exhibit our film to. By being able to exhibit our film to our target audience, this refers to Richard Dyers
theory of entertainment. This theory suggests that if a film shares an experience with the audience the audience will feel a sense
of community for the film and will be able to align with the characters in the film and talk about the film to others who could
also feel the sense of community with the film. The sense of community comes from the area as our main character lives in the
local area to where we would show our film and he uses a fidget spinner which a lot of young teenagers use frequently. In
addition to this, we also researched into genre so that when we produced our film, we could add specific codes and
conventions for that genre such as our main character wearing ordinary clothes to further enforce this sense of realism to the
viewer so they can align with our main character.
FILMING TECHNIQUES
• Before filming we decided to make our film a linear and restricted
narrative so that our audience knows as much as our main character.
This is an effective technique for comedy so that the sense of realism
doesn’t break as in real life you wouldn’t know something that would
happen in the future. Being linear is effective as the audience can
progress through the storyline with the main character, further
encouraging a connection between character and audience. We
emphasise this relationship between character and audience through
filming techniques. These techniques included: close ups and breaking
the fourth wall. By filming a lot of close ups this gives the audience a lot
of insight for the characters emotions as they can clearly see the main
characters facial expressions so that they can align with the character
and empathise for him like at the end of the film where we did a close
up of Max’s face when the fidget spinner was destroyed to convey
clearly he was distraught so the audience can relate to him. Breaking the
fourth wall was also a very effective technique used in our film as our
main character connects with the audience to create spectator
alignment. This intentional continuity break is also used in Deadpool
when Ryan Reynolds wants to address the audience. By doing this Ryan
Reynolds gets his audience involved with the film so that they can relate
to the main characters situation and empathise for the character. We
decided to do this with our main character for the same reason so that
the comedy aspects of our film would be more humorous due to our
audience developing a connection with the main character.
PRE-PRODUCTION AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
• After our group came up with the synopsis of our storyline we decided to conduct a
questionnaire on what the audience thought of our idea and whether they would consider
watching the film based on the plot. We created the questionnaire initially on blogger and
then adapted it on survey monkey.com to receive responses and collect data to analyse.
The questionnaire we conducted included questions where the audience could give both
qualitative and quantitative answers so we could have a variety of results to analyse and
make the best adjustments to our film possible. We asked the audience questions such as:
“What genres of films do they generally watch?” and “Would you go to see the film based
on the storyline?” By asking the question about genre, this gives us information on whether
the person we are asking is interested in the genre of the film. If they are interested in the
genre, we found that they were more likely to go and see the film based on the plot.
Furthermore, by asking this question, this helps us identify what people were our target
audience so we could conduct surveys with them later on in the production of the film.
When asking the audience if they would see the film based on the storyline, the majority
said yes and that they would recommend the storyline to others. Therefore we started
filming and then later questioned the audience on the rough cut to our film.
ROUGH CUT QUESTIONNAIRE
• Similar to the Pre-Production questionnaire our group decided to conduct a questionnaire on the
rough cut of our film so that our audience could give us advice for what to improve on our film for the
final cut. Before we conducted this questionnaire we already contemplated adjusting the non-diegetic
sound and editing so that we would know if the audience picked up on anything different. In the
questionnaire we asked questions like “How could you improve our film?” and “Would you
recommend our film to others?” We decided to ask the same question again to see whether our
audience would still recommend the film after watching the rough cut. What this did was it helped us
decided whether we needed to make our film better or not because if they would recommend the film
to others in pre-production but not after seeing the rough cut it means that our filming is the thing
letting us down. However this was not the case as the majority of the audience enjoyed our rough cuts
and gave us a couple of amendments to add to our film. The amendments were as we predicted the
sound and the editing. Therefore what we did to improve was we researched into non-diegetic music
to match our films comedic and relaxing theme and we edited and shortened our film to get our film
as close to five minutes as we could. Due to sound and editing being a big issue in the rough cut we
decided to match them both together through rhythmic elliptical editing when our character walks to
the bank to convey t the audience that we could use sound efficiently well with the editing in our final
cut.
FINAL FILM QUESTIONNAIRE
• Once we had finished editing and uploading our short
film to YouTube, we decided to conduct a final
questionnaire to find out whether our audience liked
our film or not and whether we had achieved the
improvements the audience had set us. To find out if
we had been successful with the editing and sound we
decided to ask the questions: “Do you like the editing in
the film?” and “If any, what improvements would you
make?” By asking these questions we directly found out
whether our editing was better and 100% said they
liked the editing as well as no pessimistic comments
about the sound from our film. Receiving feedback
from all of these questionnaires created aided us in
making the best media product we could make and this
is reflected in the answers of the final film questionnaire
as the audience have stated we have improved on our
weaknesses. Each specific question from our
questionnaire turned out effective as we got valuable
QUESTION 1: WHAT GENRE DO YOU THINK
OUR FILM IS?
• Asking this question proved effective as we got information about whether our
audience understood our film or not and how many of them did understand the
genre. Most of our audience realised that our film was a hybrid genre however 40%
of our audience got confused on whether our film was a comedy or not. This wasn’t
an issue as the hybrid genre included comedy so the 40% of our audience who
thought it was a comedy were half correct and understood our film despite getting
the genre wrong.
QUESTION 2: ON A SCALE OF 1-10 WHAT
WOULD YOU RATE OUR FILM?
• This question was one of the most important questions in my opinion due to the fact
that we found out whether our media product as a whole was successful. If this film
turned out successful, this already answered the question on whether our editing was
successful due to the fact that the film would be rated highly. From our questionnaire
responses we found out that our film was effective due to the fact that our film
achieved ratings of 7’s 8’s and 9’s and one 10.
QUESTION 3: DO YOU LIKE THE ACTING IN
OUR FILM?
• Due to the fact that people may have answered our
last question as a low rating, we wanted to find out
why they would rate it that low and by asking a
question about the acting this was one way to achieve
this feedback as we felt as a whole the acting could
have been better. A couple responses stated that the
acting could have been better therefore our theory
was right. Other than the acting being mediocre the
only other constructive feedback about our film was
that the storyline was a bit too immature. However
other than that the audience liked our film and the
majority agreed with us on the acting.
QUESTION 4: WHAT DID YOU PERSONALLY
LIKE ABOUT OUR FILM?
• Asking this question proved a treat as we got to find out what our audience enjoyed
about our film. We decided to ask this to the audience as we added in a comedic
character for the audience’s pleasure and other techniques for the same reason.
Therefore, we wanted to see if that reflected in the responses they gave to us. This
proved successful for our group as the audience feedback stated that they enjoyed the
plot and our choice of main character due to him being “dopey” and fitting the role
perfectly.
QUESTION 5: WOULD YOU RECOMMEND
THIS FILM TO OTHERS?
• The majority of our audience stated that they would recommend this film to others
due to the film being a light hearted and enjoyable experience which reflects in our
ratings. By gaining more viewers for film this makes our film a successful media
product as we are attracting more people to watch our film by word of mouth making
our film more popular.
QUESTION 6: DO YOU LIKE THE EDITING
IN OUR FILM?
• On our rough cut questionnaire we gained a lot of constructive criticism on the editing
in our film saying it could be better as well as the sound. Therefore to rectify this
situation we spent a lot of time in making our edits precise and clean to keep the story
flowing smoothly and to ensure continuity doesn’t break in our film. Therefore to see if
we did a successful job in amending the editing, we decided to ask this question to
find out whether we had improved. From the responses we found at that all of our
audience said that they liked the editing which reinforces the fact that our film was
successful overall as our weakness turn into a strength.
QUESTION 7: IF ANY, WHAT
IMPROVEMENTS WOULD YOU MAKE?
• For our final question we decided to add this in to ensure we hadn’t missed any key
elements out of our film that our audience could spot such as micro features and
editing techniques. However due to the fact that the audience appreciated our film as
a whole the only feedback was by a couple people who said the acting could be better.

Question 3 media

  • 1. QUESTION 3 WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
  • 2. WINNER WINNER FIDGET SPINNER AND AUDIENCE • Our short film “Winner Winner Fidget Spinner” is a comedy hybrid time travelling adventure where our main character Max finds a fidget spinner lying on the ground only to realise that when he spins it, it sends him spiralling back in time. The whole aim of our film was to give our audience a light hearted humorous film that they could relax to and enjoy. The comedy of our film is encapsulated from our main character Max as we get the actor (Liam Bowskill) to act dopey and unaware of his surroundings so that he uses his time travelling fidget spinner for mundane tasks adding to the comedic side of our film. The reason our film is a comedy hybrid is due to the fact that the fidget spinner involves time travel which is a key convention of science fiction. Furthermore, from setting our film in a local environment, the audience are encouraged to align with the main character as the audience can relate to the area our main character lives in. Furthermore, due to his chid like nature, this also entices the audience to align with Max as they may have children who portray this same attitude. By creating audience alignment this gives our audience the most enjoyable experience possible as they can fully relate to the character and his surroundings.
  • 3. AUDIENCE RESEARCH • Researching into a target audience is one of the major elements of making the film as you need to know what to film depending on what age group you are showing your film to. Therefore when conducting the audience research we decided to use Google to find the information we needed and we used Blogger to present the information we had found. Firstly, we decided to look at the BBFC website to find out what certificate we should certify our film as. We managed to do this through the guidelines given to us by the BBFC. After researching into the guidelines, we decided to rate our film a 12 due to intended violence and the complex aspect of time travel would be hard to understand for younger audiences. By rating our film a 12 this was great for our storyline as the plot of our storyline was aimed around young teenagers as the majority of teenagers tend to use fidget spinners so they can relate to the film and the character significantly. Due to our film being a comedy hybrid genre we don’t have a specific gender we are trying to attract with our film which is effective as a media product as we would get a bigger audience to exhibit our film to. By being able to exhibit our film to our target audience, this refers to Richard Dyers theory of entertainment. This theory suggests that if a film shares an experience with the audience the audience will feel a sense of community for the film and will be able to align with the characters in the film and talk about the film to others who could also feel the sense of community with the film. The sense of community comes from the area as our main character lives in the local area to where we would show our film and he uses a fidget spinner which a lot of young teenagers use frequently. In addition to this, we also researched into genre so that when we produced our film, we could add specific codes and conventions for that genre such as our main character wearing ordinary clothes to further enforce this sense of realism to the viewer so they can align with our main character.
  • 4. FILMING TECHNIQUES • Before filming we decided to make our film a linear and restricted narrative so that our audience knows as much as our main character. This is an effective technique for comedy so that the sense of realism doesn’t break as in real life you wouldn’t know something that would happen in the future. Being linear is effective as the audience can progress through the storyline with the main character, further encouraging a connection between character and audience. We emphasise this relationship between character and audience through filming techniques. These techniques included: close ups and breaking the fourth wall. By filming a lot of close ups this gives the audience a lot of insight for the characters emotions as they can clearly see the main characters facial expressions so that they can align with the character and empathise for him like at the end of the film where we did a close up of Max’s face when the fidget spinner was destroyed to convey clearly he was distraught so the audience can relate to him. Breaking the fourth wall was also a very effective technique used in our film as our main character connects with the audience to create spectator alignment. This intentional continuity break is also used in Deadpool when Ryan Reynolds wants to address the audience. By doing this Ryan Reynolds gets his audience involved with the film so that they can relate to the main characters situation and empathise for the character. We decided to do this with our main character for the same reason so that the comedy aspects of our film would be more humorous due to our audience developing a connection with the main character.
  • 5. PRE-PRODUCTION AUDIENCE FEEDBACK • After our group came up with the synopsis of our storyline we decided to conduct a questionnaire on what the audience thought of our idea and whether they would consider watching the film based on the plot. We created the questionnaire initially on blogger and then adapted it on survey monkey.com to receive responses and collect data to analyse. The questionnaire we conducted included questions where the audience could give both qualitative and quantitative answers so we could have a variety of results to analyse and make the best adjustments to our film possible. We asked the audience questions such as: “What genres of films do they generally watch?” and “Would you go to see the film based on the storyline?” By asking the question about genre, this gives us information on whether the person we are asking is interested in the genre of the film. If they are interested in the genre, we found that they were more likely to go and see the film based on the plot. Furthermore, by asking this question, this helps us identify what people were our target audience so we could conduct surveys with them later on in the production of the film. When asking the audience if they would see the film based on the storyline, the majority said yes and that they would recommend the storyline to others. Therefore we started filming and then later questioned the audience on the rough cut to our film.
  • 6. ROUGH CUT QUESTIONNAIRE • Similar to the Pre-Production questionnaire our group decided to conduct a questionnaire on the rough cut of our film so that our audience could give us advice for what to improve on our film for the final cut. Before we conducted this questionnaire we already contemplated adjusting the non-diegetic sound and editing so that we would know if the audience picked up on anything different. In the questionnaire we asked questions like “How could you improve our film?” and “Would you recommend our film to others?” We decided to ask the same question again to see whether our audience would still recommend the film after watching the rough cut. What this did was it helped us decided whether we needed to make our film better or not because if they would recommend the film to others in pre-production but not after seeing the rough cut it means that our filming is the thing letting us down. However this was not the case as the majority of the audience enjoyed our rough cuts and gave us a couple of amendments to add to our film. The amendments were as we predicted the sound and the editing. Therefore what we did to improve was we researched into non-diegetic music to match our films comedic and relaxing theme and we edited and shortened our film to get our film as close to five minutes as we could. Due to sound and editing being a big issue in the rough cut we decided to match them both together through rhythmic elliptical editing when our character walks to the bank to convey t the audience that we could use sound efficiently well with the editing in our final cut.
  • 7. FINAL FILM QUESTIONNAIRE • Once we had finished editing and uploading our short film to YouTube, we decided to conduct a final questionnaire to find out whether our audience liked our film or not and whether we had achieved the improvements the audience had set us. To find out if we had been successful with the editing and sound we decided to ask the questions: “Do you like the editing in the film?” and “If any, what improvements would you make?” By asking these questions we directly found out whether our editing was better and 100% said they liked the editing as well as no pessimistic comments about the sound from our film. Receiving feedback from all of these questionnaires created aided us in making the best media product we could make and this is reflected in the answers of the final film questionnaire as the audience have stated we have improved on our weaknesses. Each specific question from our questionnaire turned out effective as we got valuable
  • 8. QUESTION 1: WHAT GENRE DO YOU THINK OUR FILM IS? • Asking this question proved effective as we got information about whether our audience understood our film or not and how many of them did understand the genre. Most of our audience realised that our film was a hybrid genre however 40% of our audience got confused on whether our film was a comedy or not. This wasn’t an issue as the hybrid genre included comedy so the 40% of our audience who thought it was a comedy were half correct and understood our film despite getting the genre wrong.
  • 9. QUESTION 2: ON A SCALE OF 1-10 WHAT WOULD YOU RATE OUR FILM? • This question was one of the most important questions in my opinion due to the fact that we found out whether our media product as a whole was successful. If this film turned out successful, this already answered the question on whether our editing was successful due to the fact that the film would be rated highly. From our questionnaire responses we found out that our film was effective due to the fact that our film achieved ratings of 7’s 8’s and 9’s and one 10.
  • 10. QUESTION 3: DO YOU LIKE THE ACTING IN OUR FILM? • Due to the fact that people may have answered our last question as a low rating, we wanted to find out why they would rate it that low and by asking a question about the acting this was one way to achieve this feedback as we felt as a whole the acting could have been better. A couple responses stated that the acting could have been better therefore our theory was right. Other than the acting being mediocre the only other constructive feedback about our film was that the storyline was a bit too immature. However other than that the audience liked our film and the majority agreed with us on the acting.
  • 11. QUESTION 4: WHAT DID YOU PERSONALLY LIKE ABOUT OUR FILM? • Asking this question proved a treat as we got to find out what our audience enjoyed about our film. We decided to ask this to the audience as we added in a comedic character for the audience’s pleasure and other techniques for the same reason. Therefore, we wanted to see if that reflected in the responses they gave to us. This proved successful for our group as the audience feedback stated that they enjoyed the plot and our choice of main character due to him being “dopey” and fitting the role perfectly.
  • 12. QUESTION 5: WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS FILM TO OTHERS? • The majority of our audience stated that they would recommend this film to others due to the film being a light hearted and enjoyable experience which reflects in our ratings. By gaining more viewers for film this makes our film a successful media product as we are attracting more people to watch our film by word of mouth making our film more popular.
  • 13. QUESTION 6: DO YOU LIKE THE EDITING IN OUR FILM? • On our rough cut questionnaire we gained a lot of constructive criticism on the editing in our film saying it could be better as well as the sound. Therefore to rectify this situation we spent a lot of time in making our edits precise and clean to keep the story flowing smoothly and to ensure continuity doesn’t break in our film. Therefore to see if we did a successful job in amending the editing, we decided to ask this question to find out whether we had improved. From the responses we found at that all of our audience said that they liked the editing which reinforces the fact that our film was successful overall as our weakness turn into a strength.
  • 14. QUESTION 7: IF ANY, WHAT IMPROVEMENTS WOULD YOU MAKE? • For our final question we decided to add this in to ensure we hadn’t missed any key elements out of our film that our audience could spot such as micro features and editing techniques. However due to the fact that the audience appreciated our film as a whole the only feedback was by a couple people who said the acting could be better.
