2. Initial Reaction
• When I first read and looked through the lecture for this unit my initial
reaction was sceptical as I am horrible at drawing, therefore I didn’t have
much hope in being able to make a good product. But after doing the
experiments I realised that doing pixel art isn’t too difficult, I also have a
huge interest in video games therefore I have a lot of ideas for this unit
which will help me throughout this unit when it comes to doing my mind
maps.
3. Mind Map
Action and Adventure Game
When thinking of an action adventure game to
make my initial ideas are to make an Uncharted or
Zelda style game. These games are all about going
through waves of enemies to either save
someone or find an artifact. This is my main genre
of video game which gives me a lot of ideas for a
game to make. I could possibly through in some
horror elements like making certain enemies
monsters or add a looming threat to the player to
create a sense of urgency for the player, just to
give the game a little more of an edge. Possibly
add a Resident Evil element for example trap the
player in a big space but keep that feeling of
dread and the main objective being to survive and
escape.
4. Mind Map
Stealth Game
When thinking of a stealth game I could make the
first ideas that come to my head are Splinter Cell,
Metal Gear Solid or possibly Assassins Creed. All
these games come to mind because they fit the
category perfectly as that is what these games were
made for. With stealth games they often share the
same premise as an action/adventure game but
instead of just shooting and blowing up everything in
our path stealth games are a lot slower paced,
therefore to make the game interesting for the player
I will have to present a lot of obstacles in front of
them so they have to think methodically how to get
through the level in order to get to the final goal.
Stealth games are often quite intense so I will have to
think of ways to make it intense for the player which I
can do through the soundtrack and making things a
little more difficult for them with the obstacles I put
in front of them.
5. Mind Map
Horror and Survival Game
When thinking of horror games the first ideas that come to my head are The Last Of Us, Outlast
and Silent Hill. All these games come to mind with thinking of the horror genre because they
have scared me and everyone I know that has played them. They manage to make the player
feel like any minute could be your last which makes you very cautious, methodic and weary. If I
was to make a horror game this is how I would want to make the player feel. The objective of a
horror game is a lot different from action/adventure and stealth, instead of trying to steal
something or save someone in horror games the objective is to just survive and escape.
Therefore if I was to make one I would trap the player in a big mansion through in possibly
multiple enemies or just one looming enemy that if it caught you it’s game over. I would also
through in puzzles for the player to make the escape quite difficult. In a way horror games and
stealth do share similarities as with horror games you do need to be methodical and patient as
to survive, they also rarely present the player with any way of protecting themselves to really
make the player that more cautious, which is what I would do.
6. Mind Map: Chosen Idea
Horror And Survival Game
I have decided to make a horror and survival game mainly because this is a genre of game I
enjoy to play therefore this gives me insight in how to make it enjoyable for people that also
enjoy the genre and be able to draw in some new players that aren’t familiar with the genre.
When thinking of ideas with what I can make the game about I decided to make a Resident Evil
style game. I have chosen this style of game because I find that it appeals to the hardcore horror
fans but it also draws in new players. The reason for this is that these games can be very very
simple or extremely difficult. The reason for this being that the game gives you no pointers or
tutorial, you are just thrown into a mansion, zombies everywhere and you have to explore to
escape and scavenge for supplies so that you don’t die, with all different types of enemies and
puzzles in your way. So I feel like I can do a lot with this idea and concept to make an interesting
game for players. I really want to take this idea but add and remove certain elements, for
example to make the game more intense I will give the player very limited weapons and
resources so they will have to pick when to use them. When thinking of the soundtrack to make
for my game I have a few ideas in mind to make an intense and eerie atmosphere for the player.
For example when the player encounters a zombie the music will become very fast and high
pitched to create that sense of dread, yet when the player is exploring the music will be somber
yet eerie to keep the player on their toes.
8. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated
colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
• When looking back at my mood board I can see some repetition in
colours and mood, for example most of the images I have chosen are
dark in colour and mood, this is because the game I am wanting to
make is a horror game. Therefore the colour and mood is very dark to
keep players on their toes, it keeps the suspense and fear factor.
People are often afraid of the dark.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• My mood board will influence my final product heavily as I will be
keeping the dark tone that is in the images, I will be following the
tone as I am making a horror game, therefore keeping with the dark
tone will give players that fear factor as they will not be able to see
around them much, but there is always a looming presence to keep
the suspense
9. Schedule
WEEK OVERALL PLAN SPECIFIC TASKS
1 Production Experiments, Initial
Response, Product Research
With the production experiments my specific
tasks were too create a simple model and
experiment with drawing different
movements and actually making it into an
animation. Then with the initial plans I
researched different genres of games that I
play and decided what game I would want to
make. Then looking at product research I
looked into horror games as that is the game
I would like to make.
2 Product Research, Proposal,
Planning
With the product research now I have looked
at some already existing products I have
chosen some that relate closely to the game I
would like to make and researched them in a
lot of detail to give me ideas and let me
know what sort of formula to follow. With
the proposal I will be thinking of what to call
the game but will also be doing all of my
audience research so I know how to really
advertise the game to them.
3 Production To start off with my production I will be
making all the character models, weapon
models, item models and environments. I
will then start making all the separate
models of the characters for all of the
movements. I will also start making a some
tracks for the game.
4 Production On the last week of production I will begin to
finish off my game, I will start putting
everything together and making sure it runs
smoothly and putting my music with the
game, making sure everything is perfect.
5 Evaluation With my evaluation I will start looking
through all of the work I have done and find
all the strengths and weaknesses in my
work.
