2. Initial Reaction
• Thinking of ideas for the concept of the game, a few ideas came to mind,
the typical RPG, or short action adventure game, something like that. If I
am going to make a game like those then I don’t want them to be too
standard, but I also don’t want them to be too short, and making a game
like that with the amount of time we have is impossible, unless you’re
making it to be short.
• The games that I’m most familiar with are rpgs, actions and some horror
games. So it looks like those would be the best options in terms of the
style of the game.
• A horror game might actually work better then the other two since a lot of
the better horror games are only really short, and because of that they’re
the most effective.
3. Mind Map
Game
ideas
The first idea was an action
game, which is probably the go
to for most people. The issue I
have with this problem is, even
if you’re making a short game,
there’s so much going on at one
time, (since all action games are
fast paced) it would probably
take more then a few makes to
make a product that looks like
actual quality. (animating the
walk cycles, the gun shots, all
the other people and moving
objects in the background.)
The second idea was an rpg, which is actually less
time consuming, since it’s easier to make a short
rpg with less going on then, a fast paced action
game. It’s also easier to stylize this kind of rpg as an
older game that came out in the late 80’s. Which
means I won’t need worry too much about the
quality of the sprites and how they act and move.
The third idea I had was a
horror game, which I have
more ideas for then I do for
the other two ideas.
Also the horror genre is the
most diverse when it comes to
graphics and gameplay.
Which means I have more
options with this idea then I do
compared to the other two.
It doesn’t even have to be too
long since a lot of horror
games are shorter, and more
effective because of it.
4. Mind Map
Final idea
The idea that I chose to settle
on is a horror game.
It fits the best with the
pixilated art style and I had
more ideas for this then the
other ideas.
I figured the story, locations,
and characters I could have
were much better and less
generic then what I came up
with for the rpg’s and action
games. That being in mind, a
game like this doesn’t even
really need too many
characters, with the concept I
have in mind.
The running theme I keep coming back to is a game
that kind of breaks the 4th wall, it seems like a
normal game with a few different locations, until it
breaks down and goes somewhere completely
different. Like a stage could suddenly break down,
and the player is in an entirely different place. This
isn’t the exact final concept but this is the kind of
idea that I want to aim for.
The lighting can be really unique, with a
contrast between light and dark.
This has potential to have the most
unique sound effects out of all the
other genres as well. Not just jump
scares but with sounds that make the
player feel uneasy as well.
The locations are what’s going to be
the most challenging thing to do, since
it’s not a typical horror game that has
one particular generic location. It might
even take place in one area.
6. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated
colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
• All the images are dark, some of them have light and darker colours mixed in
but it’s mostly all just dark and repeated imagery.
• The creepiest ones are the ones that are pixilated, since they have more
freedom to make something that looks disturbing without the limitations of
having real people and trying to edit or make them up to look like that.
• The mood and tone is pretty much the same throughout the images as well,
since they’re all going for an uneasy/horror setting. They all work at what
they’re trying to accomplish.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• I want the horror and uneasy tone otherwise without it then the product will
fail at being a horror game.
• The pixelated monsters that were in some of them look really cool, so I want
to try and replicate something like those, I don’t want to make them over the
top or look stupid, just subtle enough to make them freaky like in the mood
board.
7. Schedule
WEEK OVERALL PLAN SPECIFIC TASKS
1 Production Experiments,
Initial Response, Product
Research
production experiments- learn
specifics for how to make the
three experiments as realistic as
possible
Initial response- Go over ideas
and settle on a final one, including
story characters and locations
Research- go over existing horror
games and look at what aspects
work
2 Product Research,
Proposal, Planning
Product Research- Start thinking about
what I can include in my own game.
Proposal- pitch the idea, including
genre, name, story, gameplay etc
Planning- Make a draft of what some of
the screens will look like.
3 Production Focus only on the production of the
game at this point. Try not to worry
about making the sound effects or
music.
4 Production Finish any screens that need to be done,
and start focusing on the music/ sound
effects, put them into the game.
5 Evaluation Evaluate the game, look at what
worked with the story, graphics etc…
Analyse the uses of music/ sound effects
8. Bibliography
